he was also dumb enough that once, we left for the weekend and found him still there when we came back, starved and thirsty

Dunno I find my cat pretty easy to understand.
For example, when he's being all cuddly and purr-y and whatnot it's because he wants food but knows I can't be bothered to get up from bed.

Oh yeah I remember seeing that comic way back when lostbelts just started.
I take care of a few strays in the neighborhood that were raise by neighbors sometimes. They get kibble and water and I have them hunt the cockroaches I’m too squeamish to take care of in my building on occasions. A bit disheartening they typically don’t stick around too long.
