But yeah, Holmes took to the violin and tobacco and seven-per-cent solution when he was bored out of his mind between cases. It's been a thing forever, although it's often left out of modern adaptations for obvious reasons. (I think I heard that Sherlock took some inspiration from it, though?)

I don't recall if Sherlock made reference to it, but Holmes is a recovering drug addict in Elementary. Initially, Watson was even hired by his father to keep him clean.

So you actually only knew of him at the most surface level that he's a great detective, and never read the books, got it.

There's nothing wrong with being uninformed or you should get mad at ppl poking fun at you being uninformed, it's part of the fun. Just appreciate the references because let me tell you Fate Holmes is pretty on point with how he was in the books.
