Well first off, the game is canon so yes? Even if its a pruned world, it still "happened."
Second, they've built up the idea of various levels of Servant possession and influence for a while now. In between Nasu's comments about using Heroic Spirits as oracles and FGO's Pseudo Servants, you're gonna bet they're gonna explore everything in between.

It has nothing to do with Extella, they literally are demi-Servants, Lu Bu and Cu are dead and Rin and Rani are using their powers.
When reading Camelot, I noticed that in the conversation where Xuanzang talks about how rarely Heroic Spirits actually get physically summoned she says that the usual method is more along the line of just, like, channelling the wisdom of Xuanzang to make yourself smarter.
So it's definitely still a thing, it just doesn't come up much since Servants are a more narratively interesting thing. Does someone pull that trick in Case Files? It feels like that's where they'd do that.

Yeah. The usage of it is pretty common in JP games due to certain limitations . All characters whose name have 2+ words in Blazblue are always rendered with = between the 2 words.
