I haven't actually played yet but I heard from a friend that he cannibalized his save data because he thought it was corrupt. Turns out it was just a server maintainence.
The implication is, that explanation from him made it sound like save data was client sided. Is that true? Or is saved data server sided?

It's server side, it would be insane otherwise.
However, your account details are stored on the device so you can still lose them.
