I'm curious how Rin is doing at the Clock Tower in light of Shinji's advice to her, and how the Twins are doing in preparing for their familiar quest.

That screwup also cost us our apprenticeship with Touko. We lost 10 Touko points:

Leaving us at 60

instead of 70, which is over the 65 mark.

Thet didn't cost us our apprenticeship, just would have put us over the level for better stuff. Which sucks but can be fixed. Though that was only somewhat related to Hermione. Choosing to focus on Rin after is a big part of it too. Going after her would have been better, lots of things really.

I think what is meant is the upgrade from (provisional) to full apprentice. And that is true, the Hermione incident and related blowup did deal with that.

She'd most prefer Shikigami, given the creation of pseudo-familiars and such, but she's fine with Shinji choosing one of the others. Since Shinji chose Earth as his foundational element, she's less concerned about what he follows up with.

Zelkova would prefer Shinji master his other elemental affinity (water) or his alignment (yin) first.

Generally, the first one you learn becomes the one you fall back on, and the one you're most proficient in. Given the mindset involved with each one, it also helps determine what else you can be good at.
