Bad news friends. A trio of villains has snuck its way into your community. The lot of them are scum that won’t bat an eyelash at a weeping man at the end of a barrel and who won’t think twice about lying through their teeth to save their hide, or to toss an innocent to the wolves.
Folks like those aren’t welcome around these parts. Everyone’s had enough. Time to put these criminals to the gallows.
They call themselves the ‘mafia,’ and they’ve kept their real colors hidden under the guise of everyday life, pretending to be fair, law abiding, good hearted citizens like the rest of you. But that’s not gonna stop justice from being served.
Kill ‘em all.
MAFIA
This is a game about lying and exposing lies. There are two factions: mafia and town.
The town is composed of townsmen (ordinary players), the cop, the doctor, and the vigilante. These roles will be explained below and will be selected randomly.
The mafia will be three randomly selected players who will hide their identities and pose as members of the town.
Every day the players will have the ability to vote to lynch a player, removing them from the game, until either the mafia is eliminated or the mafia’s numbers are equal to those of the town.
General rules: Day phase lasts a maximum of 10 hours. Night phase lasts a maximum of 2 hours. The game will start with a short day phase (four hours maximum), then enter a normal length night phase.
Every player has a ‘Formal Vote,’ each player may use this once in the game to initiate a vote to lynch a player during the day phase. The purpose of this rule is flexible. It could simply be used as a phase-ending mechanic written into the rules to get the game moving if a decision has been made but everyone is dilly dallying, or you can use it to put the heat onto another player and force them to talk by initiating a Formal to kill them. Go wild with this, but remember that you only have one of these, so use it wisely.
Once a player submits a Formal Vote, all players are obligated to respond to the accusation. Players are not required to immediately submit their vote, but you are obligated to discuss the Formal Vote. Of course, more than one Formal Vote may be used at once, nominating multiple different players to be killed.
If player X uses his Formal to kill player Y, player Y may use her Formal to put X on the chopping block as well, and the rest of the players will decide which of these nominees dies, or if a majority for a lynch isn’t reached both players may live.
After a Formal Vote is initiated there is a ONE HOUR TIME LIMIT to vote. The Formal’s result will be carried out after time expires.
If a lynch vote reaches majority before the time limit is reached the day phase will end and night phase will begin. Players with roles should try to keep that possibility in mind when planning your availability to send in actions.
Players with roles who do not send in an action before the night phase ends will have their chance to take action SKIPPED. If you suspect you will not have a chance to send your action in during the night phase I highly suggest sending your desired action during the day phase with a note that you can’t make the night phase.
Dead men tell no tales. If you’re dead, no posting in the thread. Not only that, but the roles of the dead WILL NOT BE REVEALED by the GM. There will be no confirmation that a lynched player is or is not mafia, nor will there be confirmation that the mafia’s hits are the cop/doctor/vigilante.
On out of thread communication: There’s no real way to moderate this, and it’s pretty expected for the mafia players to do this, so there are no official rules against it. Go wild you horrible things.
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, EDIT YOUR POSTS
Roles:
Town will have the cop, the doctor, and the vigilante.
The cop may investigate one player every night phase and learn their affiliation/role. What the cop chooses to do with this information is for the cop to decide.
The doctor may protect one player every night from being killed. Yes, dear doctor, that does include yourself. Somehow you're so good at this doctor stuff that you can patch yourself up good as new, no matter how shot up you are.
The vigilante may, over the course of the game, kill TWO PLAYERS during the night phase. Sadly, he’s one washed up bundle of shame in a man’s shape and only has two bullets, so this is all he can manage. Not only that, but if the vigilante takes action and decides to kill a player (or players) during the night while at the same time the mafia choose to target the vigilante, the vigilante’s kill(s) will STILL GO THROUGH.
If player X is vigilante and wants to kill players A and C at night, and if the mafia choose to kill player X during that same night phase, players A and C will still die.
In addition, if player X as vigilante chooses to kill players B and D, but player B is the doctor and is protecting player D, players B and D will both be killed. This also applies to the mafia’s ability to kill. So if the mafia try to kill B and D, if B is the doctor and is protecting D, both B and D will be killed. Of course, is the doctor chooses to protect him or herself, that is an option, and in doing so the doctor WILL survive the night.
And yes, the vigilante may choose to act on his two allotted kills in one single night phase. Townsfolk, pray that your vigi isn’t an absolute madman.
Mafia: There are three mafia at the start of the game. As long as all three mafia are alive they are permitted TWO KILLS each night phase. Yes, two kills. That’s as many as one + one. But only so long as all three of the mafia are alive. If even one mafia player dies, they may only have ONE KILL during the night phase.
