    Advice for a new laptop

    I'm looking to buy a new laptop. It's my present for graduating from college, so price isn't really an issue.

    I've always had Dells, and I've had decent experiences with them. I want this laptop to last a while, as I'm going to be taking it to Veterinary school when I finally get off my ass and apply. I do play games, so integrated graphics is a no-go. Any recommendations you guys can make on manufacturers or places that allow you to customize?

    Just no Macs.

    Use is an all purpose laptop, like a desktop replacement.

    Price ceiling is... Iunno, around 2500-2700?

    Actually, I'd say shell out 1500+ for a gaming rig and then 8-900 for a decent laptop

    personally, I'd rather not play games on my laptop due to heating issues and shit so I'd avoid getting a high-end laptop unless I have to, I'd rather get a high-end desktop and a decent laptop

    just my own opinion

    but yeah, that laptop is awesome, too bad it's battery life is probably shit

    Go with an Asus. Right now they're ranked higher than Sony in laptop. Roadbuster has one and he adores it.

    If you want a high performance laptop that can get run over buy a car and still work fine, go for a thinkpad
    if you want a laptop that looks nice and has performance to match, go for HP
    if you want a 100% gaming laptop, go for Kenta's suggestion, a high-end Asus, or an alienware
    If you want to be a tool, get a macbook pro

    Yeah, I'd have to agree with this. I bought a laptop for gaming purposes, and I ended up just buying a desktop a year or so later anyway.

    Well, it's not primarily gaming. I've got a lot of crystallin structure viewing programs and biochemical modeling programs, so I need HEAVY processor power.

    Quad Core should cover you just fine. But if you're really paranoid, go for a computer with a 3.0 Ghz 4-Core processor.

    It says 1.6 GHz for an Intel Core i7, but that doesn't make any sense to me. The laptop I'm using now has 2.4 GHz, and it's like, 6 years old.

    It's not quite that simple, though. One 6.4 GHz core would be a lot better than four 2.1 GHz ones, because not everything parallises well.
