Anyway from what I've seen the JP fandom doesn't really have a "canon/fanfiction" dichotomy anyway, it's more "official/derivative work" (ie does it or does it not technically violate copyright)

Prisma would fall into the former category.

Are there debates/flame wars over this in the JP fandom side, or is this something exclusive to just the western fanbase?

Not really since it's official work. Nasu didn't write quite a bit of official TM products.

I believe this entire thing is a relic of the Star Wars/Trek expanded universes being a thing in the West, yes, truly a toxic environment for nerds to grow up in.

I don't know since I mostly stick to Twitter which is a kind and gentle land, from what I've seen out in the wilds though I think people mostly agree that it's unrelated to FSN proper but they don't try to seriously argue that it's not legally a TM product (which is what "it's fanfiction" would entail).

The main issue at hand with it is if it's written by the original author, copyright, and commercial/personal use.
