I mean Civ V was perfectly fine, people just demand more from their strategy than Civ can provide anymore
Civ 5 was arguably entertaining but was pretty critically flawed and I'm still sad to see that they're trying to jam 1UPT tactical combat into where it makes no sense. You can trace a lot of what was fucked up with 5 to the design consequences of that.
I liked that because it was a different direction for Civ, which had been basically the same from 2 to 4. Unfortunately they now seem to think that copying 5 is the way to go instead of continuing to evolve so

It's not a different direction at all, they just jammed more mechanics into the same game and made it worse.
Eliminating stacks from gameplay was absolutely a different direction!?
It doesn't change the core gameplay loop, just throws a ton of stuff on top of it that gums up the works underneath.
like identifying combat as the core gameplay like you're doing is why they fucked up
At present, with all the expansions and reworks to how certain victory types work (especially culture and diplomacy) it's pretty hard to make a good argument that Civ5 is inferior to Civ4, by virtue of making different victory types actually interesting in how you achieve them.
