I put a TL note under the panel but I guess it's hard to see, I'll move it to the bottom of the bubble. In the end I chose to just leave it as "Mother" because she just says おかあさん in GO without the furigana.

Haven't seen Apocrypha yet, but from what I've heard the people who don't like Sieg view him as some kind of blank slate with nearly no personality who hijacks the entire plot. Giving him a more distinctive personality might alleviate that concern; as would reducing his overall role in the story, but that goes against the limitations you outlined.

Not giving him a shoehorned in romance with Jeanne could probably help, as well.

To be honest though, I bet the hate on Sieg is pretty overblown. I'll just have to wait and see for myself, though...
