That, and Caules is basically young Waver and Kariya combined. I'm sure it would work well on Sakura. Provided she can get out from her Senpai obsession (if F/sn background is used).
At the very least Caules would be a far better brother than Shinji. I won't deny Shinji is a good character, but he's a lousy brother through and through.

Even if he didn't find out about stuff, his attention span is literally snail or even bacteria. Extra!Shinji is that epitome.

I usually stick more to the crossover side of FF.net so I don't see much SaberxDiarmuid, but like half of the fate crossover fics are Shirou in x universe + harem + stomps everyone and the other half are character from x universe get's summoned/becomes a master in the 4/5th hgw.

I never once read a crossover. Their existence puzzles me.
people want to see their favorite characters and their respective settings come together and do stuff, simple as that
But half of a good character is how they interact with their setting, and how it makes them the people they are. Imo.
I guess.
One that comes to mind (that isn't alien vs predator and the like) is Verne's An Antarctic Mystery. He (and Lovecraft, in his own novel) created it as a 'sequel' to Poe's Pym novel. Which, does the whole 'how a character interacts with their setting and how it makes them the people they are' in crossover format.
But, then, we're talking of 13 year olds wanting to see, I dunno, Shirou banging Hermione or something, and not, uh, an established author fleshing out and bringing to life another established author's work.

So you take them out of that setting and see what that makes of them. Crudely, what's nature and what's nurture? A significant percentage of all fanfic is "let's tweak the details of the characters' situation to see what happens"; crossovers are just a more extreme version of that. Alternatively, it can be more about the works themselves, getting the universes to interrogate each other as they collide. If you've got one series which has a very optimistic view of the future, and another which is very suspicious of progress, then the friction between their ideas has potential.
