Here, I'll stop just making sarcastic comments and actually contribute.

    Spoiler:
Name: Never bothered to come up with one
    Other Names:
    Gender: Male
    Birthday: April 5
    Height: 177 cm
    Weight: 69 kg
    Hair Color: Black (buzzed short)
    Eye Color: Gray
    Blood Type: B
    Place of Birth: Japan
    Likes: Early-morning exercise, watching Sumo
    Dislikes: Mild or unflavored foods
    Talents: Taiko
    Natural Enemy:
    Image Color: Green-Blue

A yakuza family heir on the surface, but his tattooed appearance hides a long and complicated history.

In the 13th century among threats of invasion, monks within Japan developed a technique for battle that utilized a special body ink. This ink, combined with those whose bodies did not reject it, formed a thaumaturgical basis unknown at the time to the Japanese and unknowingly similar in principle to rune magecraft of the West. Empowering imagery in place of curses or actions, these techniques then took on a new identity centuries later with the influence of art forms from the continent.

As Japan modernized and tattoos became taboo, the techniques for this form of magic were erased or hidden away. [name here] is the inheritor of a branch that survived much as ronin samurai did by turning to criminal activities, forming the modern gang it now commands. While few within the organization are granted the techniques necessary for this, the propagation of the tattoo mystique allows for the magic to remain effective, yet mysterious.

So basically, a D&D tattooed monk. I had three different branches that specialized in different things--this guy's branch was specific in depicting events, which allowed him to channel superhuman feats one normally would not be able to do, while another branch could create creature familiars not unlike Sai's drawings in Naruto, and a third branch could replicate spell-like abilities.

I've thought about using him and other ideas for a full-on OC story, but the desire to do so usually derails to I could just use that for an original story that could be my own, why the fuck would I do that for fanfiction when I could attempt to make money? Which is something that often comes up for a lot of characters like this.

I suppose I should actually contribute to this thread I've started.

    Spoiler:

    Name: Nikola van Drachenhiem
    Age: 42
    Gender: Female
    Magecraft: Runes
    Circuit Quality: C
    Circuit Quantity: C

The Drachenhiem family is a part of the mage association. It has a few generations of mages in the family although they are not especially powerful, especially compared to the likes of the Tohsaka family that has spanned several generations. However this family is of regard not due to their power but due to their connections. They have quickly risen from mediocrity thanks to banking and military connections alongside blackmailing various higher profile members of the association to secure their position. This is thanks to this one woman alone, the head of their household.

Possessing distinctly average magic circuits in both quality and quantity, she primarily utilises rune craft for combat. Her body has runes engraved into her flesh; allowing her to shatter bone, tear flesh and bend metal with little to no effort. She prefers melee combat as she knows many magi overlook it and don't expect a middle aged woman to leap at them and rip their limbs off - those scared and confused faces in those last moments are very satisfying for her.

Arrogant and power hungry. Vindictive and brutal. Nikola believes in order, specifically hers as she believes no other is competent enough. She coverts power and would do anything to gain it, even having people assassinated in broad daylight if needs be. She is the kind of person who would genuinely wish to rule the world to suit her order.

Is that for your fanfic idea by any chance? It's occurred to me that the Servant of yours she'd be most compatible with would Agrippina, given their shared 'rule the world' wish (which is even worded similarly). Though by the same logic they could easily come into conflict given that they can't both be sole ruler of the world...

So, she's basically Balalaika in a TM setting? Never watched Black Lagoon so I can't say for sure but their certainly seem to be similarities (not least of which is the Faceclaim). Also, my god is she hot for 42. *shot*

Yeah, she's the first Master I've made for the fic, Agrippina is one of two servants that may work with her - the other one I haven't made yet.

Whatever the case on runes though, you can't deny their effectiveness. It gets overlooked by the elite so using runecraft would be less expected. And if Kayneth Archibald has taught us anything, Magi don't tend to cope well with unconventional tactics regardless of power level.

well i mean for like OCs for fanfics or rps.
Like runes are simple to understand and you can like have a ton of varied effects compared to other magecraft, so people always go for that.

    - - - Updated - - -

it takes a lot of creativity for rune usage to actually be... inspired.

it's not a statement of your creation or you.
Just a pattern that I've noticed.

i mean runes are easy to understand, effects can be super varied, shown a lot in canon. Therefore, it makes sense why a lot of people would want to use this idea.
    Same with projection.
    Same with reality marbles.
    Same with jewels.
    Same with mystic code guns.
then you have some people who make OC's who shoot jewels from mystic code guns.

isn't that like every Shirou gains the contender fanfic out there?
Just that he shoots projected swords not jewels.

Projection has only worked particularly well with Shirou from what I've seen in canon thus far.
Reality Marbles are supposed to be super ultra rare, I try and abstain if at all possible.
Jewels are a Tohsaka thing - I'd understand if people made an OC within that family.
Mystic code guns... well some people have a quote of edginess to try and fill.

Gem magecraft is a fairly standard method, else there wouldn't be an entire branch of the Clock Tower dedicated to it and like things.

Don't discount runes. Of course they're lazy. So is formalcraft, but both can be used in a vast number of ways.

Tohsaka using her dad's Jeweled Staff and blowing shit up. Though I haven't seen that done anywhere, I'm sure it's not a very original idea. That said, I still think it'd be badass.

    Oh, how about Mystic Eyes?

Heheh. Give Azaka mystic eyes based on her origin, now that'd be funny. Would she have to be awakened to her origin for that to work, or would it be possible for her to just somehow have taboo Mystic Eyes?

Like, she'd look at people and see their most horrible secrets (and fetishes).

I think that this line of discussion needs its own thread. This is the Create-a-Mage thread, so maybe it's only appropriate that there be a Create-a-Magecraft thread. Maybe a different name. Magecraft-Maker? Good enough, beginning construction.
