    HP: 18/18 SP: 30/30 CP: 20/200 Kn: 2 (0/5)

“Rosalind!” Calista cried out. Any satisfaction the soon-demise of the beast in front her might bring was shattered by the sight of the beast descending upon her teammate.

Rosalind was an archer, not a front line fighter. Calista was not sure how long she could last with a beast like that bearing down on her. While normally the advancing line could have kept opponents off of her, the enemy’s ability if flight made battle lines meaningless.

Leaving the first beast to her able companions, she darted off back down the steps towards the archer. She cracked off a shot with her pistol, trying more to draw the beasts attention than firing in a direction that could harm Rosalind. Rapidly closing the distance, the pirate then leapt at the creature and took a swing at it with her blade

    Weaponry (WPN) E
    Defense (DEF) D
    Spiritual Force (KI) E
    Action (ACT) A

    Style (??? Swashbuckling):
Every turn, Calista builds up one charge of [Knavery]. Thereafter, at any point during which Calista deals damage to an enemy, she can pay 15 CP to turn her attack into a [Dirty Attack]. All of her [Knavery] stacks are used up and the target attack gains Wounds equal to the number of stored charges. ?????

    Crafts

    Maim
    Rank: D
    Cost - 20 CP
Callista slashes with her cutlass, intent on leaving a dozen cruel wounds that hamper her foe.

    Offensive Craft
Range - Close Range (same Zone)
    Base Damage - 4 (+2) Wounds
If the users CLS is higher then the opponents ACT, the [Lacerated] status effect is applied on the target for one turn, reducing the effectiveness of [Evasion] type abilities by two and sealing normal movement. ???. Calista can also use one [Knavery] stack to apply the [Lacerated] effect regardless of attribute differences.

    Quickdraw
    Rank - E
    Cost - 15 CP
Callista typically keeps her sidearm shoved in the belt of her skirt, but she possess the ability to rapidly draw and fire the weapon. In game terms this represents her ability to rapidly draw and fire her weapon for an extra, albeit weak due to low WPN, attack.

    Attack Craft
Range - Mid Range (up to 1 Zone)
    Base Damage - 2 Wounds
Fires off a bullet towards a target. Possesses the [Instant] attribute, allowing it to be used in conjuction with another craft or attack (targets do not need to align). By using up a stack of [Knavery] the cost of this Craft can be reduced to 0. ???

When the beast's tooth and claws drew blood, Rosalind screamed.

It hurts, much more than any wounds that she had ever felt in her life. It was not the first time Rosalind had received injuries - she had experienced her share of fights and pain - but it was certainly the first time that she received a wound so brutal. The English girl fell to her knees, hand and body smeared with her own blood as her thoughts was filled with nothing but pain.

    "Ha... ha..."

No, she's not dead yet. it's not over, it's not the end, and Rosalind knew that. With her left hand still clutching Blossomajesty, she slowly stood up with shaky legs before falling once again.

    "...Huh?"

She looked at her own hand, and for some reason they shook much more than before. It took a few seconds before Rosalind realizes that her vision started to blur, and she felt like she wanted to throw up; the pain is even worse now than before. The wound that she received is clearly not normal...

The archer noticed the gathering jet-black water above her, yet she cannot run; the beast before her will surely prevent her from doing so. Receiving that head-on would certainly be fatal, and her current situation is really, really bad, but still...

Once again Rosalind stood, but this time she didn't fall. Her breathing is ragged, yet her posture is straight as she took numerous arrows at once; The raven-haired girl had noticed how effective her light arrow was against that strange defensive arte, and a prolonged fight wouldn't benefit her or any of her comrades.

    The solution is clear then.

Ignoring the pain and the feeling of sickness with sheer willpower, Rosalind's vision clears up as she summoned even more light than before, coating her entire body with ethereal light as she imbued her arrows with Enhancement. Even then her eyes are focused on the three griffons, never once leaving them out from her sight; the Bow Princess certainly wouldn't miss this shot.

She would evade the incoming rain of death, and deal a fatal blow to all three in the next few seconds.

    Prepared Full Evasion [Shadow Rain].

While Alonzo would have preferred to use the title "Conductor" or even "Duce" he felt that his suggestions would not harmonize with the group.

Sergei clicked his tongue, realizing that perhaps concentrating in a single target had been an error in judgment. In this case, at least. He could’ve easily predicted that Rosalind would be attacked, such a thing had been unavoidable, given the situation and the composition of the team, but… judging from the girl’s reaction, it wasn’t just a normal wound. This was bad…

Sergei calmly analyzed the situation, taking into account the possible variables: he barely paid any attention at the arte bombardment that befell his area, dodging through it as he reached a decision. “Viola! I’ll leave this one to you!”

Saying that, he moved, with no small amount of apprehension, presenting his back to the enemy in his general area, and concentrating the wind in his limbs into a single one of his arms. Then, he picked his target and fired a powerful blade of vacuum.

If the girls’ attacks didn’t manage to finish off the griffin that had attacked Rosalind, he’d fire his attack at it. If that one had been killed, he’d aim his attack to the wing of the third one, trying to prevent any escape through flight.

    Used Svarog's Blades (second activation)

Rosalind Ainslee, Sergei. B. Adaksin, Viola Santiago, Calista Tomás
    Strange Temple
    Day 4
    Mid-day

Catching Rosalind’s plight from the corner of her eye, the blonde haired captain rushed to the aid of her teammate. Her hand flickering into quick motion, Calista brought up her pistol towards the beast in the distance and fired, hoping to, at the very least, force the beast to back away from the raven-haired archer. The round bullet cut through the air and was only partially blocked by the massive wave of water that suddenly emerged. Electing a yelp of pain from the winged creature, the beast momentarily recoiled back from its furious assault on Rosalind. It barely managed to turn its head towards the direction of the attack, before Calista was upon its form, furiously slashing at the monster with her cutlass. Just as her blade cut into the beast’s flank from its left side, a translucent arc of razor sharp wind, courtesy of Sergei, slammed into the beast, ravaging its flesh and flinging the beast into the air as if it was nothing more but a rag doll.

    Battle Calculations #1
    Calista - Quickdraw
    ?????? #3 - Damage - [Silnifal Armouring] Activated - 2+3-2 = 3 Wounds
    Calista - CLS Attack
    ?????? #3 - Damage - 2 Wounds
    Sergei - [Svarog’s Blades] Activation
    ?????? #3 - Damage - 5 Wounds

Viola meanwhile threw her full weight behind taking down the wounded beast right next to her. Blurring into an action that was almost identical to her previous assault, a blast of powerful wind struck the eyeless beast once more, followed by a furious flurry of hits. However, unlike earlier, the watery wall was nowhere to be seen this time and Viola’s hits struck the beast with a satisfying smack. From the looks of it, the mysterious liquid couldn’t be used as a defensive tool when it was gathered into that ominous sphere that hung above your head.

    Battle Calculations #2
    Viola - Arte - Gusto
?????? #1 - [Disoriented] - [Evasion] and [Counter] based abilities are reduced by two ranks and target ACT is reduced by 1 for one turn.
    [Engagement] - Broken
    ACT C > D
    Viola - Physical Attack
    ?????? #1 - Damage - 2 Wounds

And then… a rain of darkest black fell on the entire battlefield.

Countless black spears, more then a meter in length, fell on Rosalind and Callista. Chunks of broken stone and waves of dust were blasted literally everywhere, as the area near you was reduced from a rather dilapidated ruin into just rubble. It was only through a brief moment of clarity that Rosalind managed to avoid most of the damage by taking cover behind a massive engraved dragonhead pillar. And then quickly jumping away when the said pillar crumbled into massive chunks of rock. Callista had less luck and was forced to bear the brunt of the strange arte head on.

    Battle Calculations #3
    ?????? #2 - Shadow Rain
    Calista - Damage - 7 Wounds
[Calista - Minor Wound Gained - Poisoned - At the start of each turn, the character may lose 2 Wounds (DUR check). Depending on the check result, the condition may worsen, be cured or stay the same.]
    Rosalind - Damage - 0 (Full Evasion)

Just as the arte was dying out, Rosalind released her own counter attack. Aiming towards the sky above her, Rosalind fired off three arrows in less then a blink. A moment later a veritable storm fell upon the three beasts from the heavens above. One of the beasts, who had just been blasted off its feet by Sergei’s wind blade, was turned into a pincushion of arrows just as it was attempting to get back on its feet. In the distance, Rosalind could see blinded beast struck by what could only be described as a rain light. Viola had barely managed to disengage in time and was now left watching the carnage as blasts of white struck the beast accompanied by a sound reminiscent of artillery fire. Black blood, guts and limbs were flung about as the black winged lion in front of her eyes was literally blasted into pieces. The last lion, floating in the sky, was better off than the others, coming out of the ordeal with only minor injuries. Regardless, the black beast came down from the skies with a graceless dive, barely managing to avoid crashing into the many pillars that littered the centre of the battlefield. Normally, both Sergei and Viola would have leapt to take full advantage of the situation, but now it was their turn to seek cover as the second bubble of water exploded above their heads.

    Battle Calculations #4

    Rosalind - Poison - DUR Check - Fail - 2 Wounds
Rosalind - Enchant + Rapid Fire [Wide]
    ??????? #1 - Damage - 3 + 3 (Enchantment) + 3 Arte bonus = 9 - DEAD
    ??????? #2 - Damage - 3 Wounds
    ??????? #3 - Damage - 3 Wounds - DEAD
    ??????? #1 - Shadow Rain
Sergei and Viola - Damage - 0 (Full Evasion)

    “Gaaa….haaa!”

Agony lanced through Callista’s body. Her stance wobbled as she struggled to keep her eyes focused and find the strength to continue to stand. In her race to protect her friend, she had completely ignored the ominous building attack.

But Rosalind was safe now. That’s what mattered.

Clutching her pistol tightly, she staggered back up the stairs towards the remaining beast, cracking off a pair of shots as she bit back the pain. Though the pain from the alien Arte stung her deeply, she’d been in plenty of tough scrapes before.

Adventure was always full of joy and pain.

She did it. Two of the beast have died with her rapid fire, and now only one is left. Normally she would let out a small smile after performing such a feat, but...

    "Urk-!"

Clutching her chest in pain as she fell to her knees, Rosalind immediately covered her mouth with her right hand before she threw up.

Panting heavily with tears on her eyes, the raven-haired girl looked at her right hand to see blood covering it. She stayed there for a good five seconds, her breathing ragged as she realizes that she had been poisoned by the previous attack, before summoning her strength once more to stand with Blossomajesty in hand.

Wiping off the tears in her eyes, Rosalind set her sight on the last remaining griffon. The area is littered with heavy cover made of stone and religious symbols, and while she can penetrate them if she fired with enough power, there is a chance that her shot will miss completely. If she follows Calista to move, then there is a chance the griffon will finished her in melee...

Her previous wounds started to sting, threatening to break her concentration while the feeling of nausea is assaulting her full force. It definitely hurts - Rosalind is not used to this kind of pain - and with the options closed for now, the english girl decided to forgoes attacking for now. She'll focus on regaining some of her strength and concentration, defending herself if necessary, and will trust her comrades to survive without long-range support for a while.

Mihoshi Kurosawa, Albrecht von Kirchensittenbach, Haruna Fujibayashi
    Forest Clearing - Arena 7 - Interior
    Day 2
    Afternoon

Led by Haruna, the four of you made your way down the winding and rather perilous looking spiral staircase. Whereas during Haruna’s earlier trip, the lights had flickered on and off at almost random intervals, now the entire stairway was blanketed in a pitch-black darkness. An ironic equalizer, considering the blinded woman with you, and one which left blinded as you descended.

Or so you assumed, at the very least.

“Ow! God damn this stupid staircase. It sucked when I could see and its even worse now. I can't orient at… gefun!”

Suddenly, the blue-haired woman’s grumbling and griping was interrupted by her face directly colliding with the staircase’s central pillar. Or that is how that sounded at least. How she managed to perform such feat was a question all in itself. How could you even stumble into something you were constantly rotating around? In any case, the end result of that small accident was that the long, constant, stream of expletives that accompanied the rest of your trek down towards the reactor room.

Reaching the, still illuminated, massive steel door at the bottom of the staircase was a relief in more ways than one.

The door itself was creaked open, though only partially, and a cascade of flashing lights and blinking screens greeted you as you entered the control room. Through the thick observation window, you could make out a structure of some sort, which periodically sent out almost blinding flashes of cerulean. Two individuals were already in the room, preempting your arrival. Hiroshi, in his yellow-white overalls, was next to one of the large consoles and was frantically typing away at one of the keyboards, while beads of sweat ran down his forehead. And the other person was a… second Haruna?!

Indeed. The individual present was a perfect mirror image of the shinobi who just come to notify you moments earlier. Most likely it was one of her specialized ninja techniques, but even so… Creating autonomous constructs, of any sort really, using spiritual energy was exceptionally challenging even for extremely talented martial artists. Creating independent clones capable of speech and reasoning? That spoke volumes of the auburn-haired girl’s skill at manipulating spiritual energy.

“This thing…” Panic reflected from Hiroshi’s eyes. “Why the hell was there a nuclear reactor underneath the arena? There shouldn’t even be one on Urashima, not to mention the arena itself!”

    “....”

“And half of these safety systems have just been torn clean off. Even if this control system is basic enough for me to understand, I am locked out of almost every single command line. I can’t reassign priorities even if I want to. Or shut it down for that matter!”

    Reactor Options

Try to fix the reactor [Electronics/Mechanics Check - Extremely Difficult] - Despite the extensive damage it has recieved, it might be possible to fix the reactor. At least enough for it not to be an immediate threat. If successful, it would undoubtedly be a great boon, as it would allow you to use the underground bunker as a base. Not to mention the reactor itself would be capable of generating electricity, making life much easier in this strange place you have been thrust into. However, the risk associated with this is extremely high and the consequences of failing can potentially be extreme.

Shut it down! [ACT/CLS/Acrobatics Check - Difficult] - While it is impossible to shut down the reactor from the control room, it might be possible to do so by physically interacting with the reactor itself. This would, however, require a remarkable display of acrobatics and strength, as the emergency shutoff valve is placed on top of the reactor itself and the emergency catwalks have all been destroyed. This would allow you to bring out any salvage you can find from the strange bunker, but would, unfortunately, make it relatively uninhabitable due to lack of electricity. And failing is probably not that hazardous... for people other than the one attempting the challenge, at least.

Leave it - Clearly the least risky option, you choose to not interact with the reactor at all. In
its current state, the reactor would probably tough it out for a week or so, allowing you to at least make it out of the blast zone without issue. However, this would mean that you would have to leave behind all the non-carriable items (guns, medical equipment) you have found and the Arena could not (obviously) be used as a base of operations. Establish a base of operations weekly action becomes compulsory next week.

Rosalind seemed to be out of combat for the moment, and she wouldn't do well in range at the moment. She had probably been poisoned... which meant they didn't have much time to lose. This last beast could still wreack havok upon them if they let it live.

Sergei sprang up at incredible speed, jumping towards the beast. His companions did the same, attacking it with all of their strength. Sergei however, took aim not at the body of the beast, but instead tried to tear through its wing. If it flew up again, it'd be out of range for most of them and would be free to bombard them with whatever that black water was.

"Hmm, is that so..." Albrecht muttered as he pondered on the young man's bewilderment at the reactor, "Considering that and the silence of our new friend here I'm inclined to believe the purpose of this reactor was more than just powering up all those flashy screens they had lined around the stadium for the crowds."

Albrecht moved over to one of the chairs placed by a console and took a seat. He glanced at the screen before turning to face the others and steepling his hands.

"I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I quite enjoy the progress man has made when it comes to modern technology and I think it'd be a shame if we went back to the old days of sitting by a fire at night so I'd like to try and save this reactor. Of course I also believe that this machine may have been partly responsible for our trip here and if we have any wish of making a return trip we'll be needing it as well."

He then parted his hands and lifted them up in a shrug, as if preemptively responding to the concerns the group would launch at him.

"Yes, yes, I know that the reactor is on the verge of melting down and the slightest of errors could end our lives in the most unfortunate of explosions, but then I'm fairly confident in my capabilities of fixing this problem. After all I was able to deal with that sealed door earlier, I'm certain that the matter with this reactor will end the same way and if it doesn't...well, if it's any comfort, we at least won't live long enough to regret trying to fix it."

I led them to the reactor as quickly as I could with a blind person in tow. Earlier it was hard to walk with being in an unfamiliar environment in a low light area. So I was unable to stop myself from being slightly disoriented. A slight hamper my combat capability, but my abilities can help me with the low light conditions.

Going down this time was much easier just by virtue of knowing the layout by going up and down it multiple times. So more or less, I have memorized this area well enough to navigate without any loss of combat capability.

So while everyone was surprised by seeing two people at the bottom of the stairs. One of them was our "trusty" engineer Hiroshi-san. And naturally /me/. She gave me a wave before coming up to do a high-five. We traded high-fives.

    "Hey, /me/. What's up?"

"As you can see, he's trying to fix it."

"Since /I/ haven't offered to help, I'm guessing it's beyond our scope?"

"Like a high school student like /us/ could repair this without some help..."

We didn't need to talk to each other, but no one needs to know they're autonomous and synched to me. During her time here, she did find out how to shutdown the reactor. So that's good news. I considered turning off the reactor because at least we can stay here if it's off otherwise we have to hurry out of the blast radius... My decision-making was halted by the doktor.

"Hey Doktor, you don't mind if I sent /me/ up there in case things go wrong?"

I pointed towards the top of the reactor where the emergency shut-off valve was located.

"If you notice that things are going awry ahead of time, we can at least signal for /me/ to try and shut it down."

If they find it agreeable, I'll help my clone jump up by launching them up for their first jump. After that, it's just up to her.

"Otherwise, I guess I can help with some electrical issues? I might be able to reroute some of the power or power some inactive parts..."

Standing there, amidst the yellowish haze emitted by the flashing light of the computer screens, the five of you sketched out a general plan of action. Led by “Herr Doktor” you would try to fix the reactor. However, despite the rather momentous difficulty of the task ahead of you, it wasn’t quite impossible. After all, you had one of the most brilliant medical minds of the last century standing next to you. And while nuclear reactors weren’t quite his forte, it was bound to be better than the alternative, right?

    Right?!

As an additional failsafe, however, you decided to send a clone of the agile dark-haired to potentially shut down the massive, dangerously glowing, reactor in the distance. With a peerless grace, “Haruna” made her way through the twisting network of pipes, collapsed walkways and dangerously perilous gaps. Meanwhile, Albrecht was busy trying to grapple with the nigh-arcane system that had been created for this blasted reactor. The main issue was its mind-boggling simplicity. Indeed, whoever had crafted this system had apparently crafted it with drooling sycophants in mind. This would be all fine and dandy if it worked, but in the current situation, most of the basic emergency controls were flat out inoperable, as a vast chunk of the actual reactor room (and most of the emergency reactor safeguards) was apparently… well missing. And since the system was incredibly basic, you had nowhere near the level of minute control needed to reconfigure most of the coolant systems. So you were, in essence, forced to recreate and reconfigure vast chunks of the OS itself so that your commands would even be accepted.

“Haruna” meanwhile was about to approach the final and most perilous leg of her journey. The final climb towards the top of the reactor. The reactor itself was a smooth black pillar, more than fifty meters across and about that much upwards as well, only marred by the thinnest of grooves that ran across its surface. Those grooves were, unfortunately, the only possible hand and footholds you had to work with. And those blasted lines were thin indeed. However, you persevered and made your way, slowly, but with some confidence towards the top of the reactor. In fact, you could already make out the crimson emergency lever attached to the top of the black pillar. It should not take more than two or three more jumps and…

Accompanied by an intense flash of light, the reactor let out a rumbling shake, causing your foot to slip and plummeting “Haruna” towards the depths below. The raven haired mirror image had time for only one thought before she struck rubble-strewn steel floor and vanished into the ether.

I will, one day, kill the idiot who put that switch there. Mark my words.

Well. So much for that backup plan.

It would seem that it all rested on the shoulders of the good doctor now. Well, him and Hiroshi, who, as the only person present with some sort of previous experience in electronics, had now been drafted to be the german scientists assistant. Which meant that the young man in yellow overalls spent most of his time running accross the dimly lit control room rearranging wiring, rerouting power, and in general doing all the heavy lifting labor that most assistants do. Albrecht meanwhile, was seated in front of the main console, his face set in an expression more reminiscent of a man faced with an amusing puzzle, rather than one trying to frantically save hundreds of lives.

In fact, the seated doctor didn’t even bother notifying the others when the crucial moment arrived.

Instead, he casually pushed the Enter key.

    Strange Temple
    Day 4
    Mid-day

Both Sergei and Calista leaped into action, their forms blurring as they moved with intense speed towards the last remaining beast, with the clear intention of putting it down. Deprived of its packmates and hopelessly outnumbered, there would be no doubt about the eventual fate of the black lion, no matter what strange Artes it might have up its sleeve. Therefore, the magical beast in front of you did the only sensible thing in its hopeless situation.

Letting out an almost mournful roar towards his two fallen packmates, the black beast turned around and fled. Buffeting winds rocked the temple as the strange monster returned to the sky with a massive flap of its wings. In a matter of moments, the beast had already fled into the distance, his retreat only interrupted by the slight yelp that echoed through the temple when the beast's wing was grazed by one of Callista’s bullets.

Silence passed over the battlefield and, for now, it seemed that you were victorious.

    Fight Outcome

[Beasts Defeated! - [Abandoned Temple] has been added to the list of possible home bases. [Mountain Peak] has been added to the list of explorable locations.]

    [Loot gained - [Strange Armour (Damaged) - Non-human] x2, [??????? Remains] x2]

A closer examination after the fight revealed two things. Firstly, you managed to find a rather long and winding set of stairs that headed up towards the mountain summit. From the looks of it, the large staircase was in an appalling state of disrepair. No doubt the journey towards the peak would be a rather extended and arduous trip, especially considering the state of the path. You would not be surprised if the path wouldn’t even lead to the top and instead crumbled to nothingness at some point.

What in this blasted place wasn’t crumbling or about to collapse, after all?

The second was, obviously the beasts that you fought. A quick glimpse over the corpses revealed that, while the state of the beasts was… well not that great (one of them was blasted into pieces, after all), the armor they wore was still mostly intact. Somewhat damaged, but still intact. Granted, they were obviously made to be worn by… lions, so they weren’t really something that you could normally wear, but perhaps there was some way you could repurpose them. They didn’t seem to weigh that much either. Far less then you would expect armor of that nature to wear, at least. Transport of the beast corpses, however, would probably be more trouble than it was worth. They were heavy, messy and bloody. While it might be useful to have someone look them over, it wasn’t really an option at the moment. At best, you could skin them and grab some quick tissue samples.

Better than nothing, after all. Maybe there is a lunatic somewhere that will teleport you home in exchange for some random lion pelts or something.

Forest Clearing - Outside - Gathering Hut
    Day 5
    Evening

You were standing in a rather haphazardly constructed hut. Well, maybe calling it a “hut” was giving it too much credit. More accurately, it was a roof on sticks. But then again, that was more than most of you could claim to your name. In fact, it was the only roof in the entire camp. Granted, most of that was due to the fact that you still hadn’t really decided where to settle down (and figured out if you even really needed huts to begin with), but it was still somewhat impressive.

Doubly so, as the blue-haired woman had cobbled it together in a single day.

After spending a day or so getting back her eyesight, Oogami Katsumi (or that was at least how she referred to herself when her name was asked) disappeared into the surrounding bush with nary but a wry comment, only to return with a bundle of sticks and what could only be described as a massive pile of long, soft-looking grass. A couple of hours later that pile of sticks and grass had been transformed into a basic shelter. Judging from the looks of it, most of the items you had seen down below in the cryotube room (mainly beer, cigarettes, gas) had been somehow brought here. The motorcycle you noticed earlier was now standing a couple of feet from the blue-haired woman herself, who was standing a couple of feet further seated on a couple of cases of beer.

A sharp crack and a whizzing sound filled the air, as Katsumi popped open one of the beer cans.

“Aah, that hits the spot.” The long-haired woman gave a welcoming wave towards the twenty or so people who had gathered in the open-air hut. “Help yourself if you want to, there should be more than enough beer to go around.”

While you appreciated the sentiment, free beer wasn’t quite the reason you had all gathered here. No. The reason you had gathered here was the rather simple proclamation made by the rambunctious woman once she had returned from her impromptu trip to the wilderness.

“I know what happened and I know why you are here. Gimme a couple of hours and I’ll tell you all about it.”

Well, a couple of (rather tense, if you were completely honest) hours had passed.

“Right… where to start…” Taking a sip of her beer, the mysterious woman was clearly somewhat perplexed on where to start her story. “Introductions it is… For those of you who haven’t met me before, I am Major Oogami Katsumi from the JSDF. Well, officially at least.”

“However, I am here in my capacity as Jinkai Guide #5.”

“Bear with me, because this will be quite the monolog.”

“In 1997, the Japanese government launched what was called the “Earth Simulation Project”. It postulated the creation of a vector supercomputer that would be able to model potential future outcomes for large scale problems. Mainly, it was used to model the effects of global warming and other scientific problems of that nature.”

“What you probably haven’t heard, is that the “Earth Simulator” ran into… complications. To put it bluntly, it was utterly incapable of modeling future scenarios past the year 2028. Nothing. And the issue was completely independent of the actual parameters you threw at it. We could remove five of the largest nations completely from the calculations and it still said that nothing existed past 2028. Heck, you could remove climate change and all of its myriad effects entirely and still get the same result.”

“And this was not a singular event.”

“Over the next two decades, this same type of experiment was run all across the world, with every scenario imaginable and with far more brute computation force behind it. And the answer was almost always the same.”

“All life will end on planet Earth in the year 2028.”

“To fully explain why this is the case is far beyond me, but to put it in the most general of terms, it is because Earth will run out of Spiritual Energy. All life-bearing planets generate spiritual energy and all living things consume minute amounts of it at all times in order to survive. However, Earth’s “generator” has broken down, in the year 1675 to be precise, and ever since then life has existed by consuming the excess amount of spiritual energy created by the planet before that point.”

“And that energy has almost run completely dry by this point.”

Halting her explanation for a brief second, the self-proclaimed “guide” guzzled down the last of her beer and chucked the empty can towards a large bag that had been situated a bit further off. A large pile of empty beer cans could already be spotted lying in the bag. A ludicrous amount, really. Where in the blazes was all that beer going to?

Katsumi cracked open another beer from the case below her.

“Now, I’ll be going into further detail on how Jinkai specifically links to all of this, but before that…” The military officer in a tank top tilted her head somewhat quizzically. “Y'all with me so far? Apocalypse and all that jazz?”

Rosalind took a deep breath as she listened to Katsumi.

The revelations and answers the major gave was too otherworldly, too shocking that Rosalind wishes she had a cup of black tea right now to calm her nerves. She doesn't drink alcoholic beverages, so the English girl merely hugged her knees and contemplated what the revelation meant.

The world is ending in 2028? It sounds so surreal that even with her exposure to the supernatural and strange animals she still couldn't wrap her head around it. Rosalind Ainslee is a normal girl; her only goal and concerns so far in her life were her own family and best friend, so the scale that Katsumi so casually speaks of seems like a fantasy for her.

She took another deep breath, trying to accept everything that is being told.

Rosalind weakly nodded at the question, her violet eyes filled with too many thoughts and emotions that it was clear she is in some sort of a daze. The fact that she bring her legs even closer to her chest for comfort and reassurance is just another proof of it.

She might as well try to make sense and think of it after everything have been revealed.

The last thing I got from me was the absolute hatred of the person who designed the lever to be THERE. To be frank, I did dislike the placement very much. However, I could still make it. It would just be more taxing than what I would like it to be.

I prepared to do it myself but looks like the good doktor has everything under control. Now all I have left is to look for a certain Jinkai engineer to have an accident in the news when I get back to our world.

The talk about the Apocalypse didn't exactly worry me. The world ending? My world could've ended at any moment. Dying in training. Dying on the job. Being discovered and being disposed of. If there was a constant in my life, it would be death looming over my shoulder waiting for me to mess up.

So to me, it didn't matter. My only wish was to live my life "normally" until the very end. If the world ended during that time frame, I would've accepted my death without any major regrets.

"The world is going to end?!? We have to do something about that!"

But "Haruna Fujibayashi" wouldn't have a constant or a wish like that. They would've cared about the world. They wouldn't wish for a normal life, but wish for a life of adventure and mystery.

So I acted like I cared about the world. Like I was ready for this mystery. I acted like a schoolgirl who didn't understand the hardships ahead. Only those who were great at reading people and knew the "real me" would notice just how much I didn't care.

"The world is going to end?!? We have to do something about that!"
The brash military woman let out an amused chortle at Haruna’s comment. It would seem that she found the auburn-haired ninja’s comment rather amusing for some reason. A rather peculiar occurrence, considering that her comment was probably the most “normal” answer one could have considering the circumstances. Nevermind her real earnestness behind it.

“Well, you are in luck. Most high-ranking governmental officials seemed to share your concerns.”

“And that leads us to Jinkai, I suppose. To put it bluntly, the Jinkai Corporation doesn’t really exist.” Katsumi let out a deep sigh of frustration. “No… it’s probably more accurate to say that the Jinkai Corporation doesn’t exist in the sense that you are currently imagining. There is no doubt that there are countless engineers, scientists, pencil pushers, and managers who are employed by the Jinkai Corporation. And that Jinkai products are being sold in countless stores around the world.”

“But that is mainly just a front, nothing more. A very profitable front, but nevertheless simply a front.”

“Most of what you think you know about the higher echelons of Jinkai is absolute rubbish. The Jinkai “Family”? A number of irrelevant actors trapped in a gilded cage. Oh, they do own the company on paper, but even if tried to do anything that would disrupt the existing status quo, their nervous systems would be fried by their neural implants. Not that they would ever want to, of course. That entire “family” was selected purely because they would never want to “rebel” in the first place. Likewise for the “board of directors”, which hasn’t met on anything but paper for the past nine years.”

“In reality, Jinkai was created as a cover for the governments of the world as they tried to “save” the world.” A wolfish grin flashed across the long-haired woman’s face. “Makes sense, right? Corporations function with far less oversight than governments, after all. No-one questions how a private company distributes its own budget or what it researches. And not only economically. Corporate greed serves as the perfect justification for wide-scale experimentation, both moral and immoral. And since they have the backing of the organizations that typically regulate these fields, such experiments have an extremely low chance of becoming anything more than rumors in the public’s eye.”

“Besides, it's deniable. If the truth about Jinkai was ever revealed, they would just crucify it in front of the world and make another one.”

Another can was thrown towards the white bag in a haphazard manner.

“So that is what they did. Used the Jinkai Corporation to throw everything and the kitchen sink at the problem and try to figure out a way to save mankind. And that is also the explanation for the reason you have been thrown into this world.”

“Because they think it will allow them to save Earth.”

“You heard it when you entered the bunker, right?” Her tone dropped lower, as her voice boomed in an almost comical fashion. “Intruders detected as members of “Salvation Project 4”! Argo conditions… blah, blah, blah.”

“So yeah, this is it. Salvation Project 4.” Crossing eyes with everyone else in the room, Katsumi simply let out an easygoing shrug. ”Unimpressive, I know. Well, to be technically correct this was Salvation Project 4. The project ended the moment you were thrown here and I really have no idea if it succeeded or failed. We are a bit too far to tell if you hadn’t noticed.”

“The logic behind it was rather simple. If our own generator is broken then we should just use another one, right? There might not be another life-bearing planet near us, but the multiverse is large and wide, after all. If we could find a way to connect to those worlds, then we could just siphon off enough spiritual energy to keep our own world functioning, right?”

Anastasia’s relatively hesitant voice suddenly cut into Katsumi’s rather prolonged monolog. A number of emotions were present on the younger girls face, making her expression rather difficult to read. If you had to put your finger on it, it was part skeptical suspicion and part honest dread.

“Wouldn’t that just kill both them and us? Just over a longer period?”

“Honestly, even that would be an improvement, but no. If you remember, the Earth generated enough excess spiritual energy to sustain biological life for five hundred years after its “time of death”, so to speak. This world, from a cursory glance at least, generates just as much or even more spiritual energy. Well, it's not like your question wasn’t a concern during the planning phase.”

“Which is why Salvation Project 4 involved formulating a contact with fifteen different worlds, not just one.”

“The real question was how to even reach these “worlds” in the first place. Sure, we could calculate the locations of probable life-bearing planets, but it's not like we could actually travel there using conventional methods. Lightspeed is still a universal constant and these worlds were countless lightyears away. Earth simply doesn’t have the time for something like that.”

“However, there is a phenomenon that affects spiritual energy that is akin to gravity. High densities of spiritual energy “attract” phenomena of lower spiritual energy towards it. Note that I said “akin to gravity”, as any comparisons to gravity are completely counteracted by the fact that spiritual energy has literally no mass. No-one really knows why. But even if we didn't know why it was still a paradox we could use.”

“We would simply break down physical matter into pure spiritual energy, block out any force of attraction other than our target location and reconstruct matter at the other end.”

“Granted, this was not really an easy task on any level. I hear that a lot of the research that went into defining and attributing spiritual energy in humans was both wide-scale and rather… distasteful, to say the least. Nevertheless, we could satisfy most of the steps, but we still needed to have individuals with a lot of spiritual energy so that in the end there would still be a residual image on which to reconstruct the things we actually sent towards the other side.”

The military woman’s finger suddenly pointed at the vast majority of martial artists in the room.

“Which is where you guys come in. You see we used your spiritual attraction as sort of an anchor to drag your surroundings with you to this other world, and then once more to put things back together in the right order at the end. Well… work in progress, I guess, considering that half of the bunker was left behind on Urashima.”

“In fact, that entire “God of Steel” nonsense was purely created in order to sift out those who can use spiritual energy from the general populace. After all, the talent is exceptionally rare and conventional methods were gauged to be… to ineffective. Besides, Jinkai has burned a lot of bridges during its existence and this allowed them to draw out not only the greedy and the glory hounds but also those who had a bone to pick with the company.”

“It's not like the participant's motivations mattered for the project at hand. We just needed to surpass a critical mass.”

Pausing for a second the JSDF officer placed her beer can a bit further and dug up a half-crumpled cigarette from her breast pocket. With a lazy crackle of a lighter, a thin vine of smoke rose up towards the grassy roof. Even though her voice momentarily muffled by the cigarette, the blue-haired major continued without missing a beat, although a slight note of laziness crept into her voice.

“This is where they wanted me to do all the emotional semi-patriotic nonsense, y’know? Earth thanks you for your indelible sacrifice! Future generations will surely forever treasure the future you gave them and all that other horseshit.” Katsumi took such a deep drag from her cigarette that you could have sworn that nearly half of rapidly burned to nothingness. “But that’s how the chips fell for you guys.”

“I wish I had some kind of magical solution on how to get back home, but I don’t. This was never supposed to be a two-way trip in the first place. In fact, for those farts back home it is probably preferable if you never return.”

“Fewer things to cover-up and fewer loose ends to deal with, right?”

“So you are stuck here for the foreseeable future. And... well to be honest, its probably indefinite.

    Rosalind Ainslee
Forest Clearing - Outside - Gathering Hut
    Day 5
    Evening

This event is history in the making.

A travel to a different world. A project to save Earth. Jinkai Corporation being just a fluke and cover-up for the governments. Justifications, terms and words that she did not fully understand, an explanation that is simply too much to be taken in for Rosalind Ainslee.

She might not truly get the full meaning and scope of what Katsumi said, but she does understand what it means on a micro level.

She is stranded here, without a way to go back home.

Why? Why should she be involved and be a part of this?

She doesn't have any grudge towards Jinkai. She doesn't have an extraordinary past or experience. Even as an artes user she only barely qualifies to be one, merely having Enhancement as her one and only arte, so why should she, too, be used for this project?

She just wanted to try save her friend. So why?

“It's not like the participant's motivations mattered for the project at hand. We just needed to surpass a critical mass.”
The JSDF officer's words echoed back in her mind.

In the grand scale of things, the motivation of a single person doesn't really matter, as well as the lives of several hundreds. Rosalind understand that to an extent. It is obvious billions of lives would be much more important than those of several hundreds.

And yet, tears threatened to fall from the English girl's eyes.

Why should it be now, just when things started to look up for her family's lives? Why should this project be done in secret, its true purpose unannounced so that it could trick and gave her false hope? Why should it be so that she hasn't even said goodbye to anyone?

"Come back safe and sound, Rosa!"

That was the words her little sister said before she departed for the so-called tournament.

She had replied positively back then, a smile gracing her face as she departed full of hope and spirits. She remembered her parents, too, were there, happy to know that Lily would be in good hands while she was gone. And she remembered her dear friend, the one who made all of this possible, lying on her deathbed in the hospital.

If she had failed, she would surely cry. Disappointed and perhaps shattering her confidence in her own abilities, but at least Lily would be there for her, as would her parents. She would fall, but she would recover, and no matter how long it takes she would get over it with time. She would like to think like that.

If she had joined willingly, if she participated after saying farewells to her family and apologizing to Estrella, if Jinkai had disclosed the tournament's true purpose, then perhaps she would have felt different. Perhaps she would have smiled, accepting the fact that what she does is necessary and a necessary sacrifice for her family and Earth. Content in knowing that the future generations would forever be thankful for this journey.

    But this...?

Estrella would pass on. Lily would be shattered, nowhere near ready to lose her sister. And what about her parents, who until recently had only cared about her? Would they still love Lily even after this happened? Or would they blame her little sister for her disappearance, or heavens forbid, gives her worse treatment than simple ignorance?

Reality is cruel, and at this moment Rosalind Ainslee truly felt despair.

"...What about you, officer?" The girl asked as she looked at the officer in the eye, tears clearly falling from her eyes as she doesn't even make an attempt to hide it. Even the cigarette smoke, which would usually prompt her to hold her breath and cover her nose, does not affect her in the slightest as Rosalind continues her question. Only her composure and training in mannerism to keep her emotion in check prevents her from choking on her own words.

"Are you okay... with this? To be trapped here, with no way home...?"

    Mood: Cold Vengeance

“This all sounds like a bad isekai,” Kaede says under her breath. She was never the sort of person to openly weep about such depressing matters. No. She’d brood and be bitter and most importantly be angry and take it out on whatever, but now wasn’t the time. They were trapped here and that was that. Thinking about everything she lost, which wasn’t much, yet quite a lot, made her so unbearably pissed off.

As for the government conspiracy, she didn’t care. It reminded her of her tokusatsu plots. Funny how her childish dreams were not only real, but they totally screwed her over and so many other people in the process. She could feel her blood go cold, with that calm, icy rage that she was ever so used to. No sense in complaining. Only actions could articulate this feeling.

“If we’re basically stuck here for the indefinite future, is it a wise idea to tell the others? Or should we just let them operate under the merry impression of a lie?”

Her voice has a sarcastic bite to it, despite the monotone delivery.

Well, this all whole situation sounded ridiculous, hell most of the stuff sounded like utter nonsense to Daigo. Spiritual energy, Earth's core, different worlds in some sort of multiverse, Jinkai turning out to be some force that was trying to save the planet? Yeah, talk about turning one's world upside done and then throwing them right out of it to boot...permanently. If one of the civilians heard this, they'd probably be freaking out right now and there'd be murder, literally.

Kinda surprising that it hadn't already happened with this little group of theirs.

A sigh escaped Daigo as he took it all in.

It really wasn't the time to panic.

"So Jinkai tried to 'save the world' and now we're stuck here as a sort of sacrifice for that, that's...just great."

And this world didn't seem take too kindly to strangers either.

"And the wildlife around here isn't very welcoming either from what the scouting team reported in. One hell of a short end of the stick."

He had to lie back down on the nearby tree, where to even start with all this? He had only a normal life to go back to but it was still his...and just having it taken away from him like that.

"We can only try to survive and move forward then, huh?"

Yeah, they could only move forward from here but it was doubtful everyone felt that way, denial, depression, even if they didn't feel it, the majority that was with them would, there was no doubt about that at least.

"And the others that came with us? Doubt they have the 'spiritual attraction' you're talking about so Jinkai collateral damage, right?"

"Keeping them totally in the dark doesn't feel right, they're in this just like us...but having another hysteria episode like when we landed ain't gonna be pretty."
