Hunt for the Perfect Spear - Rank A: Born from Lancer’s lifelong desire to find himself a perfect spear, and which he finally fulfilled by making a contract with Kanika’a, allowing the two to share the spear Kani-ka-wi. In essence, this Skill is the authority to wield a Divine Construct.
Alongside this effect, the effects of Eye of the Mind (True) are provided, though at a reduced rank if the weapon Lancer is facing is not a spear. In addition, Lancer’s desire for Kani-ka-wi creates a ‘tracking’ effect. He can always sense the spear’s location, and can even detect those that he has wounded with it.

A spear of immaculate make, Kani-ka-wi is a Divine Construct in nature. In truth, it is the aumakua Kanika’a’s personal spear, and could be seen as the spirit’s true body in the pair’s manifestation as a Heroic Spirit. Lancer’s contract with the spirit allowed for both of them to be counted as one being, and thus they could share the spear that Lancer desired.
Kani-ka-wi is activated by casting the spear towards an opponent. Unlike several other Noble Phantasms manifesting as thrown weapons, aiming Kani-ka-wi is a minor concern. As the spear soars through the air, it will penetrate through all in its path. While it flies, however, it releases shockwaves similar to sonic booms in its wake. The destruction that Kani-ka-wi can cause is evident to this day, the spear having blown a hole in the mountain ridge of the island Kaua’i.
It ought to be noted, however, that the spear does not return to Lancer’s hand after it has been thrown, and he will have to personally retrieve it.

Lancer’s true identity is Kapunohu, the Champion Spearman of Hawaii.

Kapunohu is an earnest youth, though his face is always obscured by the makini mask that he wears. As compensation for hiding his identity, he will readily announce his True Name to those who ask for it. Kapunohu also strives to be straightforward in other ways, seeing little point to being indirect.
As a Heroic Spirit Kapunohu is close in nature to a Hawaiian Nightmarcher, and thus sees nothing odd about his manifestation as a Servant. However, due to his nature, as well as having manifested as a Heroic Spirit during a Nightmarch, he is not granted the full package of knowledge that the Grail usually provides, and is thus a little overwhelmed by the modern world.
Kapunohu’s defining trait is his being a spear maniac. In life, he was obsessed with his quest to find a perfect spear, and his experiences have granted him an almost supernatural knowledge on the subject. He can gauge the weapons of others at a glance, as long as they are like a spear in shape. It is even possible for him to glean the effects of spear-based Noble Phantasms like this. Oddly enough, Kapunohu seems to be aware of the relative rarity of famous spears in mythology, and thus treats the wielders of such weapons as his sworn brothers. The setup of a regular Holy Grail War aggravates him, as he usually doesn’t have a chance to face other spear-users.
Used to the idea of serving a lord, Kapunohu likes the thought of having a Master. He still expects appropriate gratitude for the services he provides, and it is possible for a disrespectful Master to get Kapunohu to turn against them. Still, Kapunohu will do his best to strike up friendly relations with his Master.
Kapunohu’s wish to the Holy Grail would be for an opportunity to test his skills against other Lancers.

Though he now shares a body with the spirit Kanika’a, Kapunohu truly doesn’t mind. He is forever grateful to the spirit for being allowed to wield a weapon like Kani-ka-wi. Their minds are separate, though, and Kanika’a can converse as freely as Kapunohu can.
Kanika’a projects the image of an old man more than a little exasperated with the thoughtless youth Kapunohu, though he is a reasonable one. He is also not above advising Kapunohu during battle, or chiding him for mistakes.
As a part of Kanika’a’s essence is tied to Kapunohu’s spear, the spirit is not overly fond of Kapunohu using his Noble Phantasm.

Lore

Ever since Kapunohu’s youth, he had been looking for the perfect spear, whether he traded, found, bought, or even got people to make him spears. He never could find the one he had wanted.
So one day, when he went out to the playing field to test his newly made spears, another spear zoomed past his face. When he looked closely, it seemed perfect: perfect length, weight, balance, and cutting edge. When Kapunohu turned to find the owner, his stomach chilled, seeing that the owner had no footprints. It was a spirit! Kapunohu offered ten of his finest spears for it, but the spirit Kanika’a refused. Then, finally, a truce was made that Kanika’a would be Kapunohu’s aumakua, and the spear would be theirs. So began a strange partnership - man, spirit, and the perfect spear.
Kapunohu went home to his brother-in-law Kukui-pahu’s, house. He was the chief of the Kohala district who had been so jealous of Kupunoho and his spear that when Kapunohu invited himself into their dinner, Kukui-pahu had said that he didn't invite Kapunohu, and asked if anyone else had invited him. All of the people present said no, and giggled.
In anger, he ran away and with one thrust, cast the spear through eight hundred wiliwili trees. He went until he reached the smaller section of the Kohala district of Chief Niu-li’i. There, he offered his services, since these two parts of Kohala constantly went to war.
When Kukui-pahu attacked again, three hundred of his men had fallen, himself being one of them - with Kapunohu’s spear through his heart. But the war was not over, for a great warrior named Pa-o-pele led the remainder. So Kapunohu took the challenge of fighting Pa-o-pele alone, which was said to have a war club reaching the mists of heaven to the depths of the sea. It was said to take four hundred men just to lift it. Kapunohu’s stomach once again chilled as he walked up to the giant warrior. The great Pa-o-pele had said to run away or he'd be squished like a bug! exclaimed . Kanika‘a, the spirit, came and said, that he was all thunder, and no strengh, and the plan was for Kanika‘a to jump on his back and bite him, when Kapunohu would then throw his spear. When Pa-o-pele dropped his war club and reached over his shoulders, Kapunohu threw it with all his might, and killed the warrior instantly.
Kapunohu now needed more of a challenge for his new and great talent. So rumor spread of a man in Kauai, the beautiful island in the western sea. A man with a sling shot could shoot a rock five miles with another as it rolled. Kapunohu then cried out scornfully, for that was only a children's toy to him.
When Kemamo, the sling shot warrior, and Kapunohu met, they gambled their lives for distance of their weapons. Kemamo’s rock shot through the valley, across the plain, into a coconut grove, and out again. Over a ridge at Anahola it flew, totaling six miles on a beach nearby. Kapunohu then through his spear through the valley, across the plain, into a coconut grove, and out again, but it was flying too low to pass over the ridge in Anahola, so Kapunohu whispered a prayer to Kanika‘a With faith, the spear broke through the ridge, and landed ten miles past Kemamo’s rock.
The hole in the ridge on Kauai can still be seen today and two mountains still stand, one representing the fallen warrior, Kemamo, and the other being his wife Waialeale, the mountain being named Wai-ale-ale. It is the wettest spot on Earth, and this represents her weeping over her husband’s slain body.

Hi all. I haven't posted anything here in a while (not that I did much in the first place), so I'll consider this my first time. I originally made an FGO design for an Avenger-class Servant of Sutoku-tennou and shared it on /r/grandorder which can be found here. So I've decided I'll contribute the full "materials" profile here. I think I might've powerw*nked him a fair bit too much, but he was damn fun to make.

His title is "Takama-ga-hara Avenger" because he was originally conceived for an FGO singularity-style story I had (but have since scrapped). The title was catchy though so I kept it.

  People are creatures that forget many things, but an Avenger never forgets. The timeless grudge will never fade away. His critical damage is increased for as long as it continues to burn within him. Even if the people of that nation will forget, he will also serve to remind them.

  One's magical energy endlessly surges until their revenge is accomplished. Despite his powerful feelings of vengeance, his efficiency rating is low due to his gale-like nature.

• Daionryou A
  Denotes one's status as a Daionryou, or "Greater Vengeful Spirit". Sutoku-tennou is regarded as one of the Great Onryou of Japan. A vengeance that shall never falter, Sutoku's attacks against Heroic Spirits of the Rising Sun are empowered exponentially. Has the bonus effect of exploiting enemy weaknesses and ailments to cause massive damage. At the A Rank, it is also possible to provoke natural disasters to inflict wide-spread havoc.
• Bloodsoaked Sutras B
  A multitude of curses, in the form of Buddhist sutras corrupted by Sutoku's blood which has been used as ink. Initially, they were but holy manuscripts conceived to honor the fallen of Shirakawa-den. The distorted Five Sutras of Mahayana: Saddharma Pundarika, Avatamsaka, Mahaparinirvana, Mahasamnipata, Prajnaparamita. Ominous powers such as the vanishing of water supplies, tremors of the earth and necrosis of the flesh are possible. However, due to the distortion of historical fact, the truth of how they were represented has been lost to time. Any types of blessings they may have once offered have become virtually non-existent. The curses cannot be resisted, but have no effect on those with Divine traits. Furthermore, those who have sought or attained enlightenment may possibly be able to identify those sutras and cleanse them, inverting the effects.
• Innocent Monster [Tengu] EX
  A derivation of Innocent Monster that imbues one with powers of the Tengu. It is popular belief that Sutoku-tennou transformed into an Ootengu after his exile in order to further carry out his vengeance against the imperial court. This was his claim to fame as one of the Three Great Evils. Allows for the creation of Tengu-like familiars as manifestations of grudges, as well as providing the benefits of all Tengu-related Skills. Because of how Tengu are revered in Japan, it also bestows him with low-ranking Divinity.

Background

An infamous yokai and vengeful spirit, regarded as one of the Three Great Evils and also the Three Great Onryous of Japan. Born in 1119 CE as Prince Akihito, he was officially presented as the first son of Emperor Toba. His true nature was actually the son of the former, retired Emperor Shirakawa. This garnered him the enmity of his peers since an early age. Such feelings only became worsened when Shirakawa forcefully retired Toba and granted the Chrysanthemum Throne to Akihito, now Sutoku. However, Sutoku's good fortune and enclosed world of bliss would not last... in 1129, Shirakawa passed away.

Toba set up a cunning ploy. Over the next many years, he orchestrated the downfall of Sutoku by convincing him to retire and appoint Toba's son as heir to the imperial throne. This resulted in Sutoku's naivety costing him any and all power over the throne, effectively relinquishing it to Toba and his son. Furthermore, Sutoku's allies were dismissed to distant lands, far beyond his reach... there was nothing he could do. However, by the time 1155 came around, there was a chance for redemption. Konoe, the son of Toba, died of an early age due to sickly disposition and left no heirs. This was seen as Sutoku's chance to reestablish himself and reclaim what was rightfully his. He proposed that his own son take the throne, though the imperial court had other ideas... Toba's fourth son, Go-Shirakawa, would become the next Emperor.

Disputes escalated when Toba died in 1156, into a tempestuous yet swift civil war that shook the nation; the Hogen Rebellion. Calling upon allies like the famed archer (and also close friend) Minamoto no Tametomo and Fujiwara no Yorinaga, a minister of the imperial palace... the war did not last beyond a single battle. With the backing of both Minamoto and Taira clans, Go-Shirakawa's forces overwhelmed Sukotu's armies in the Siege of Shirakawa-den. Yorinaga was put to death, and Tametomo fled to Izu. Sutoku was exiled to Sanuki Province of Shikoku. It was a merciless victory and a crushing defeat.

Shaving his head and retreating into hermitage, Sutoku took to the lifestyle of a monk. To honor the fallen of Shirakawa-den, he wrote many sutras and sent them to the imperial court... a simply humble act of a man who had lost everything to his name. Though even this became trodden all over and cast aside... the court saw them as potentially cursed due to Sutoku's standing, and rejected the sutras. However, there was a rumor that those manuscripts had been written in Sutoku's own hateful blood...

The rejection was the final straw for Sutoku. He bit his tongue in a fury and slowly bled to death... humiliated, defeated, deposed and alone in his distant prison of a home. As his life withered away in a pool of his own blood, he laid down the foundation of a powerful curse... imbued with his concentrated hatred for the imperial court and fuelled by his vengeful life essence. The curse was cast... not just unto the court, but the entire country. Sutoku's vengeance would be known to all.

His death was ignored. A declaration was made to bury him with discretion, away from the potential mourning of anyone at all. He was branded a criminal of the state. The curse was in full effect by now... various omens began to seize the court. When he was to be buried, a horrendous storm took place. The casket in which he was drawn caused the bedrock it lay upon to bleed profusely. When his still-fresh corpse was cremated, the dark haze of Sutoku's ashes fell down upon Kyoto. A great fire broke out and destroyed parts of the imperial palace, earthquakes assailed the provinces, storms terrorized the farmlands, imperial successors suffered sudden deaths...

These are but few of the omens said to be invoked by Sukoto and his curse. Even to the present day, his grudge plagues the Japanese culture and populace. Natural disasters and catastrophes are attributes to his timeless wrath. Furthermore, the Hogen Rebellion became the catalyst for the imperial court's downfall, and a reform of government took place when the Kamakura Shogunate seized control. Thus, the age of the samurai commenced...

Though Sutoku's grudge was to never be forgotten nor trifled with. If the country and its people were to ever look away from the darkness within the lands of the rising sun... he will be the first to deliver them a swift reminder.

Commentary

• His true form is more "a nameless vengeful spirit that was once the emperor called Sutoku". Regarded as one of the Three Great Evils of Japan, and also as one of the Three Great Vengeful Spirits. He retains a vague sense of self-identity thanks to the anecdotes of his Noble Phantasms.
• Design-wise, he is a humanoid clad in a fiery red-black aura. Edgy, as the Avenger vessel dictates. His base outfit resembles a cross between the apparel of a samurai and a Tengu. However, as ascension progresses, his form twists more into that of a Tengu. Jet-black feathers protrude from his form, his legs deform and his nails extend into claws. Fire and lightning emanate from his features at all times, a testament to his rage. His final form bears the trademark Tengu mask as his visage, and his wings are always present. Also on fire constantly.
• Heroic Spirits of Japanese origin are entities he will lash out towards uncontrollably. This extends to the protagonist of Grand Order by technicality, but he is bound by a contract of Servant to Master, so the danger is mitigated. He also holds respect for other evils of Japan, including Shuten-douji and Tamamo-no-Mae. However, his expectations conflict with the reality in those regards. There is one more person who he still respects, one of his few remaining regrets...
• Additionally, he will hesitate towards who consider themselves samurai. Sutoku-tennou's omens are often regarded as what allowed for the rise of samurais throughout Japan. Thus, he feels a certain connection with all samurai.
• Even to the present day, calamities are attributed to his vengeance. In his current incarnation, his grudges are timeless (I use this a lot, eh?). Future, present, and past Japan, those who thrive it in its civilization must be destroyed. While the "nation of the rising sun" is the source of his wrath, he still reveres the country itself deeply.
• Personality-wise, he is forthright and no-nonsense. Unlike the whimsicality displayed by others of his kind, one only finds a calm yet seething anger that is unsettling. He is an outlier to the typical tricky nature of yokai. He is subdued through being a Servant, to the level of being able to communicate reasonably with others. Outside of belligerence towards the Chrysanthemum Throne, however, one cannot garner much from him. That said, he is not as lawless as to lash out wildly without regard to surroundings or allies. He is capable of directing his rage when it is necessary, even if his reasoning is lacking at best.
• ... Overall, he's kinda just like a grumpy old man that lost all his gambling money and took his anger out on people unreasonably. Deep down, he is one that values culture the most. It is because he loves Japan and its humanity so much so that his wrath can blaze so fiercely. When love is at its strongest, so is the resentment towards it.

• Nippon Koku no Daimaen To Nari
  The Spring of the Empire Shall Rest Nevermore

  Type: Anti-Unit (Self)
  A Noble Phantasm that is named after the anecdote of his death. After biting his tongue, he bled to death and laid down a powerful curse on the imperial court and the nation wrought in that very blood. It became the symbol of his vengeance against imperial Japan, and his state of being as an Avenger. As a Noble Phantasm, it transforms him into an "Anti-Imperial monster" as a symbol of political ruin. It gives him the power to sublimate the internal hatred of oppression present in many individuals towards figures of power and authority. When present in Japan itself, his form becomes more like that of a Tengu and he is able to call upon Tengu-like familiars (these are little more than manifestations of grudges with limited sentience). Because of the degree of influence it had in the downfall of the imperial court, as well as his grudge being a present factor towards many omens throughout Japan's history, it has reached the EX Rank.

• Taroushoubou
  The Great Fire of Yasumoto
  Rank: A
  Type: Anti-Fortress
  A great fire of the Yasumoto era that completely incinerated a Buddhist temple and portions of the imperial palace. It was said that the fire continued to rage on as if it had a will of its own, with a duty to burn everything to ash. This calamity was attributed as one of many omens brought about by Sutoku's vengeance in death. It has been sublimated as a Noble Phantasm that creates an unstoppable inferno that actively hungers for its surroundings. A black-red flame spreads rapidly and ensures the incineration of whatever it can consume. It has a set range and cannot be stopped by even Sutoku himself once activated, so its range of destruction is absolute. Magic resistance, as well as wards against evil and curses, allow one to take a Luck check against the flames. If one succeeds, they can escape from the fire clinging to their lives.

• Kessou Gobu Daijoukyou
  Sanguine Five-Path Mahayana Meditation

  Type: ???
  His final and secret Noble Phantasm, the sublimation of the sutras he sent to the imperial court, which were subsequently rejected due to the possibility of them being cursed. There were even rumors that they were written in his own blood... this is the distortion that became a source of this NP's existence. Typically, it offers him an array of powerful curses and the ability to cause various omens, represented in the skills Daionryou and Bloodsoaked Sutras. Its use in activation is single-use and specific. It is a last resort Noble Phantasm only usable under very specific circumstances... a powerful omen is deployed, at the expenditure of his own life. It is the invocation of the corrupted Prajnaparamita Sutra. Originally a composition of sutras that embodied the "perfection of transcendent wisdom in the Bodhisattva", they have been corrupted by his blood and vengeance. He attains a contradictory status as an "imperfect Bodhisattva" whose emptiness is fulfilled by the timeless grudge. In this form, it is not incorrect to say that his existence comes close to that of an "evil of humanity". In summary, it is a catastrophe that embraces the concept of "reverting to hollowness". The chances of its activation are next to zero, however, for not even a Master aware of its concept will be able to invoke it unless those specific conditions are met.

  Second, the wrath of nature must be conquered and tamed...
  Third, ambitions must transcend the mortal coil...
  Fourth, monetary values becomes meaningless...

Sutoku-tenno: Now that is cool. To be honest, I'd actually forgotten this guy even existed, even though he's been name-dropped a few times in canon. One thing I particularly like is the whole "evil tengu" bit, given that tengu started getting painted as evil right around the time of Sutoku's death.
His third NP is a bit questionable though, given the implication that he could become a Beast. Those are (at least as far as I know) mostly entities that still hold love towards humanity, and I feel that Sutoku-tenno probably doesn't have much of that.

Sort of yeah. As an Alter Ego, he would manifest as a Nightmarcher, and I interpreted Kanika'a as being one of their leaders. As an Alter Ego, he would be part of the legend of the Nightmarchers.

Staying on the subject, I find myself in a pickle of sorts with one of my sheet ideas.
My original idea was to pull yet another Alter Ego, with the Rainbow Serpent Eingana masquerading as a group of Aboriginal Heroic Spirits called Djanggawul. The connection would have come from the fact that both Eingana and the Djanggawul are creator entities, and the latter were eventually eaten by a Rainbow Serpent (as I recall, this had something to do with establishing the cycle of life), giving the Heroic Spirit the ability to manifest as something close to its true form as a Rainbow Serpent (under a different name, but them's the breaks). Later on I decided to add a little more vagueness to the concept since I found that there are very similar groups of females that have almost the same legends (and in some cases different versions are directly related to each other).
After further consideration, I'm a little torn as to whether I should go with the original idea (which is getting flimsier the more I look at it), or if I should go for a straightforward interpretation of the Djanggawul sisters (or another similar group). If I go with the latter, I might pay lip service to the Alter Ego idea by adding that as an alternate class...
Still, any advice would be appreciated.
