The Beast's Lair Secret Santa Contest! Legacy Edition (2019)

Four years, and now a special edition with this one.

This is a thread for a Secret Santa contest, a sort of fic exchange, in which members may anonymously submit ideas or premises, and later receive another's premise in turn to write in exchange. Rather than be scored by a set of judges, instead, all the fics will be posted and the community gets to vote for which of their fics were their favorite. Most of the details remain the same as last time, except this will use pools like the previous two contests.

The bulk of this OP will be copy-pasted from last time, but there are new rules for this version, to be outlined below.

As usual, any genre may be submitted.

    A General Summary:

    1. Participants will submit their prompts, three per participant. PM them to me.
    2. Once the deadline's up, participants are then given another user’s prompts to write for. Of the three, you may choose one to write in exchange. You can write more than one, but the idea here is to give more freedom of choice to the receiver, in the case where if they don’t like one prompt, they won’t be stuck with that
    3. Up until the writing deadline is up, participants send their fics to me. Once the deadline's up, all the fics will be posted anonymously into one megathread.
    4. The community (so, not only limited to participants, even non-fic writers may participate) may then vote on their most favorite fics out of all the submissions, rather than use formal judging. At the end, points are tallied and a winner is declared.

    Rules and Guidelines:

    • Participants that submit ideas must write an idea in turn. This can't quite be enforced, but don't try to mooch a free fic off this contest and not even bother try write anything in turn. If you find yourself unable to finish in time, a half-done fic is better than no fic at all.
    • Don't be pressured to make your fics like 20k word epics. Shorter drabbles, like only 1-2k words, will be just fine.
    • Similarly, try keep your submitted fic pitches flexible. Please don't try request super long fics, or prompts so specific you pretty much wrote the fic yourself already, and try to keep one-shot or drabble ideas in mind. We don't have much time to write, so please be considerate of others.
    • TYPE-MOON fics/premises only. Don't request crossovers, even if one side is TYPE-MOON. This is mostly for fairness, so that people won't find themselves writing, say, a Blazblue crossover when they can't be expected to have any Blazblue knowledge. Writers are free to cross over with whatever they wish
    • Not a rule, but it may help to note what parts of the Nasuverse one is familiar with, and what works they've consumed enough to be comfortable writing. It'd be bad for everyone if people got pitches that they know nothing about. Similarly, if there are prompts that people don't feel comfortable writing, you can request to avoid them.
There are a few additions that make this edition a bit different from the others:

    NEW LEGACY EDITION RULES:

    • In previous contests, those who failed to turn in any material were barred from future contests until they turn in that material. In this edition, participants who didn't show up in previous contests will be allowed to submit their owed fics in this contest, putting them in contention for judging and prizes. The idea here is to hopefully get previous participants to turn in fics they owed.
    • For other participants, if you submitted any prompts in a previous contest that didn't get written, you can resubmit them again for this one. If you do submit old prompts, try to submit one or two old ones, and at least one new one.
    • If you have not participated in previous contests, you will have to submit three prompts as usual.

The reasoning behind these new rules was because we felt that the contest ban was ineffective in its intended purpose. It was originally supposed to serve as an incentive to get authors to turn in, and to incentivize no-shows to eventually turn in their fics. However as contests went by, the only this seemed to accomplish was to cause the pool of active authors to dwindle, and no-shows very rarely turned in the fics they owed. As the purpose of these contests is to foster activity, this was counterproductive. The ban may be lifted in the future, but going forward, my ears are open to anyone who has suggestions regarding incentivizing participants to show in the future.

Pitched ideas will be displayed publicly here, so you have time to think before pitches are distributed.
    Submitted Prompts

    Pool 1

    • Bazett Fraga McRemitz- Tradition Carrier, God Holder, Enforcer, Master in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Though her participation in that Grail War was cut short, there was no doubt that she was a force to be reckoned with, a master of arts both martial and sorcerous. Write a story showing Bazett in her element, engaging in her role as a combat magus before being dispatched to Fuyuki. Perhaps executing a Sealing Designation, or maybe working on a private contract as a bodyguard - anything goes. Show us what it means to be a high-level Enforcer.
    • Nanaya Kiri - Bearer of Pure Eyes, Head of the Nanaya Family, Peerless Demon Slayer. A man born and bred for the art of killing, the ending of human lives - and the lives of those no longer human at all. Though he had no grudge against the role decided for him, he would eventually give up the way of the assassin after discovering the joy that was life in the birth of his first son. Too late, unfortunately, as we see the karma of a killer catch up to him in the events of Red Demon God. Show us a glimpse into the life of the demon slayer, either before his epiphany or after. Teach us what it means to be a remorseless destroyer of the supernatural - or what it took for him to put it all behind him.
    • Zepia Eltnam Oberon - Head of the prestigious Eltnam family, Director of the Atlas Institute, destined to become the 13th Dead Apostle Ancestor. As with every Atlas Director before him, he used his abilities as an alchemist to predict the future, and predicted an absolute, inescapable end to Humanity. Driven mad by his findings, he eventually brought the Eltnam family to ruin, broke the greatest taboos of Atlas, and surrendered his humanity, and eventually even his material existence, all for the sake of the Sixth - a final solution that could bring salvation for humanity, that could bring about a future even the legendary alchemists of Atlas could not predict. Show us an episode in the life of Zepia, describing one of the many steps that led to his ascension to the rank of Dead Apostle Ancestor. Show us the resolve that drove a man to madness in the face of the inevitable.

    Pool 2

    • Waver Velvet is a man who is destined to become Lord El-Melloi II, an (in)famous lord of the Magic Assocation. However, just because this is meant to be doesn't mean that fate has to have a hand in it. Or rather, "Fate/." The request: In a world in which Holy Grail Wars and Servants don't exist--a world in which humanity isn't at the top of the metaphysical food chain, in the Tsukihime timeline--write a fanfic about how Waver's story ends up at the same conclusion his always does.
    • Gilgamesh may have been the one that TYPE-MOON chose to play the role of a powerful Servant meant to act as a final boss/major antagonist in the 4th and 5th Fuyuki-based Grail Wars, but that doesn't mean he was their only choice, nor that there aren't plenty of Servants introduced since Fate/stay night's inception that could fill such a role. Write a story in which Gilgamesh is replaced with another, powerful Servant that could fill such an antagonistic niche. Consider the ways that the personality differences and skillsets of your chosen Servant affect the Fourth and/or Fifth Holy Grail War(s), while you also set them up for said antagonistic role.
    • Who is Gazamy? What is he like? Why is he such a person of interest to magi? One thing's for certain, and it's that his story didn't end with his Sealing Designation. Put your headcanon hat on and weave some words about the Clock Tower's most infamous and mysterious prisoner.

    Pool 3

    • Aozaki Aoko does not make a habit of worrying about things. If it was up to her she would ignore her duty as a Magician for as long as she can. Yet as she stands against the bloodlust-driven rampage of the White Princess she can't help but wonder if putting down genocidal vampires is part of that duty or just an occupational hazard. "Dogs of this cursed order, don't even wait for the Sixth, I'll exterminate you all with my bare hands!"
    • The Holy Grail brings Heroic Spirits to the modern era and provides them with all the necessary information to adapt, from language and history to an understanding of technological and cultural changes. But there are other methods to invoke Heroic Spirits which offer none of these conveniences. Magi who take a portion of their power into themselves. Mediums and oracles who channel them to receive guidance and achieve miracles. How is this done and for what purpose? How does a spirit from the past react to its emergence in an unfamiliar era? Are all Heroic Spirits guardians of humanity as a whole or do some retain the same exclusivist motivations as they did in life? Tell the story of an attempt to invoke a Heroic Spirit outside the premise of a Holy Grail War.
    • Adapt a short story or novel of your choice in a Nasuverse setting. Try to have the broad narrative strokes and the characters involved align thematically. Essentially, if you've ever read something and thought it sounded like a good TM fanfic plot, make it so. Of course, being evocative of the original rather than strictly following the same structure is fine too.

    Pool 4
    • [Nasuverse in general] "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright." Adapt the classic 20th-century werewolf plot of a person being cursed to turn into a monster to the Nasuverse. How the curse works, the type of ending, everything is up to you; the beast doesn't even have to be a werewolf specifically! The only restrictions are that the transformation has to be treated as a curse, at least at first, and it has to affect a pre-existing Nasuverse character (though it can be one from any work).
    • [Nasuverse in general] Either a detective noir story or a Golden Age of Detective Fiction-style involving pre-existing Nasuverse characters (you can even mix and match different works, if you want).
    • [Tsukihime / Fate] Shiki, Shirou, or both reminiscing (in the Platonic sense) about death in general and, more specifically, the afterlife. Use the Lyke Wake Dirge as a point of inspiration.

    Pool 5

    • In a world where Emiya Kiritsugu never existed, who becomes the Einzbern representative of the 4th Grail War? Following the mysterious Master of Saber in this rendition of the 4th Grail War, what will happen at the end? Will there even be opportunity for a sequel?
    • Zelretch never (I repeat. Zelretch never) messes with the Kaleidoscope for flights of fancy. He's got a lot on his plate as it stands, primarily to stop the destruction of the Human Race before the year 3XXX. However, one day, he decides to extend the safety of the human race a lot longer, and over a lot wider of a stretch of space... by manipulating the Kaleidoscope of various other realities to prevent Gaia from culling the children of Alaya. (Crossover story, but the other part(s) of the story will be up to the prompted)
    • When Shirou is saved from the Fire of Fuyuki, he is not alone. He has two younger biological sisters with him, both twins, that Kiritsugu tries to hide the secret of Magecraft from... but it proves to be useless when Shirou blurts it out after the Fire happened. The twins prove to be prodigies with Magecraft, but they seek to help their older brother with his inherited dream, mainly by getting his training methods corrected. What happens in such a situation where this Shirou is the final Master of the Grail War?

    Pool 6

    • The dawn of the 20th century approaches as the 19th nears its end. In America, the backyard of the world, the last vestiges of wild magic are fading with the subjugation of the Native Americans and the taming of the West. And yet, the White House has found itself in the grips of a deathly curse that threatens to disrupt the heart of the nation. Out of options and unwilling to turn to the Mage Association for help, the President solicits aid from a man who once called the United States his enemy. Once a hero and rebel, Geronimo is now nothing more than a drunkard and gambler with no pride, no money, and no desire to help those who took away his freedom. But if it's an old friend asking... (The exact kind of story and the identity of the friend are up in the air. Canon characters, OCs, or weird connections to other parts of the verse are all fine! Serious mystery? Old school action? Surprise comedy? Deep reflection on historical mistreatment of Aboriginal Americans and the twisting of Geronimo's story to suit pop culture? Anything goes, so long as it's good and treats our guy better than FGO did.)
    • Waver Velvet has come down with a supernatural cold. He's too sick to work, too sick to play games, and too sick even to yell at his students. With the Clock Tower's greatest lecturer out of commission and self-study out of the question due to an impending audit, a substitute lecturer (who wasn't properly vetted due to the urgency of the matter) is called to preserve both the sanctity of Lord El-Melloi II's lecture hall and next year's budget allocation. But keeping this classroom of misfits in check is a feat fit for a hero... (Pick a canon character to play substitute teacher for a bit. Report results. Please avoid the obvious choices unless you absolutely can't think of anyone else.)
    • The half-breed families of Japan have a long and bloody history... but from where did they originate? Dive into the past of the Tohno, Kishima, or another clan, and imagine a plausible start to either their bloodline or their feud with the Demon Hunter organization. Alternatively, write a simple period piece with oni hybrids taking prominence. Involving canon characters is encouraged but not necessary. (Whether this story takes the form of oni lewds or a gorefest or a Tsuki-ish rumination on the nature of life and death, be sure to show how humanity confronts and coexists with demonic bloodlust!)

    Pool 7

    • Clock Tower frat party. I want a bacchanalia of vice and folly that makes Dionysius’s gigs look tame.
    • The Fuyuki Grail is the 726th Holy Grail registered by the Holy Church. Write about the registration of a different Holy Grail from the perspective of a Church member, with an emphasis on faith. What does it mean for something to be defined as a Holy Grail? No Servants.
    • Many have asked about the Fourth Magic. But a more important question is: Who is the Fourth Magician? Write about them or the search for them/their Magic.

    Pool 8
    • Touko’s been on many exploits before we see her in the works today. The Mystic Eye train, her encounter with Prelati, her adventures in Bermuda, the works. Make a one-shot out of one of her prior adventures, be it one alluded to in previous works, or a completely original one. No Servants or Grail Wars.
    • Mundane meets magic. Write a story about an actually mundane human encounters the supernatural. This can take the form of an investigation, an attack, a romantic tryst, or so on. Set it up as a hook or introduction to a longer work. Original characters fine, no Servants.
    • A piece focusing on one of the Dead Apostle Ancestors, that have yet to have a major appearance. Must be outside the context of a Grail War. As most of these Ancestors have only like three lines of description to them, you are encouraged to extrapolate your own details, writing them how what you think they must be like.

The prize, as usual will go to the author of the winning fic, and may be either an illustration of their fic, or of another fic of their choice. An addendum to this will be that prize illustrations may only be of a single scene, and up to three characters (any more at my discretion).

Entries can be found here. Voting will begin on January 1, 2020.

Two pools is a pretty good start, I'd say.
McJon01: We all know that the real reason Archer would lose to Rider is because the events of his own Holy Grail War left him with a particular weakness toward "older sister" types.

I can't participate in this round after flaking out so hard on the last one, but I've got to say all nine of the submitted prompts are amazing. Not a bad one in the bunch.

Even if this contest doesn't come together, I would love to see any one of the nine come to fruition in some shape.

24 hours remain, by the way. The plan for if we can't get enough by tomorrow is that the deadline will be extended until either the end of the month, or we get six entries.

Granted, but there is no way I could cobble together something worth reading in less than 24 hours. I've been reading a lot of old fanfic contest entries to get my own creative juices flowing, and it is reminding me of how high the bar is set. BL is full of great authors. I could submit something terrible, or I could not submit anything at all right now.

Yeah, what I meant earlier is that you can submit owed fics along with other participants by the December deadline. Also, two pools to go.

Then there was that guy in the lemon contest that only wanted FGO Gudao threesomes with big titty Servants. Nachos managed to at least salvage that one.

Double detective pool here is also iffy, but not as bad as it could be. Still, being forced to pick between a 30s-style mystery and a fetish TF fic is not enviable...

Hey now, I resent the implication that werewolf stories are necessarily fetish stories! But very well, I hear you three and I'll change one of the prompts.

It was, in fact, delivered on.

Then there was that guy in the lemon contest that only wanted FGO Gudao threesomes with big titty Servants. Nachos managed to at least salvage that one.
hey now, that's a good doujin at least

As the deadline has passed without sufficient participants, the deadline will be extended to either 9/30, or when we get six entrants. Once we get six entrants, then pools will close and the contest will continue. If we do not get enough by 9/30, the contest will close and not go forward.

I submitted prompts to the pool. Hopefully I can participate in this contest... life is bound to get in the way.

Hmm... this is a bit of a surprise these days.

An archive of my works on the forum that's pretty accurate.

Note that I don't wish to be seen as an idiot any longer. I can't always promise better works than before, but I can sure as hell try, alright?
