its the thing Araya says in Knk when void takes over that with a katana she can do 9 meters instead of the normal 3 with a knife.

EX ME Can make you this weird sort of insane where you're visibly normal until the object of your obsession appears. If you can imagine it then he's kind of like Florence, with the obsession over curing patients replaced with Jeanne. He can rationally consider tactics and strategy, carry on a pleasant conversation, and everything will be fine usually but at some point Gilles will want to talk about Jeanne, and when he does he'll lose any semblance of visible rationality. She's his entire world, the only thing that matters, and thus everything is in some way or another going to loop back around to her in his mind.
