It may make the phone even thinner but honestly I think we're at the point where who cares about that?

if they just wanted it thinner, they should have switched to a 2.5mm jack

Not as good as 3.5mm either but adapters are easy to come by

or if they insist on having shitty proprietary bullshit, a lightning (or whatever the apple plug is now) to 3.5mm adapter that has a lightning pass-through so you can charge and listen at the same time.

I don't know why they didn't do that (passthrough) off the bat. Barring some real bullshit hardware issues, some 3rd party will pump those out within the month for 50 cents a pop/

I bet it has something to do with the waterproofing and how they were completely unwilling to compromise the phone's form factor even by an extra millimeter to do it.
