No, it is not, because senpai-kouhai thing is the only uniquely japanese way to address a person in thisilly debate save for maybe kids doing the nii-chan thing for non-relatives.

And please don't try to tell me the way Tamamo goshujins everything is normal. There are other ways to address husbands and lords.

I am not talking about the uniqueness, I am talking about the "loss in context and connotations" that is present in all of these cases, which you can't deny it not being there.

Except that it is perfectly normal for a royal lineage hime-type character from the feudal era to refer to a husband as goshujinsama and the Lord as goshujinsama. It's like Nero, Gil and a bunch of other characters spamming archaic instead of the standard watashi.

of course you're not talking about uniqueness
    i am
    to explain
    my point
The point being that not translating a word when there is an acceptable direct or indirect translation is silly. And the only case where it might be okay out of mentioned is senpai-kouhai, because unlike other cases, afaik this is a uniquely Japanese (as opposed to English-speaking countries) general way of addressing someone based in a type of interpersonal relationship that is also much more nuanced in Japan than in anglophone countries. No such thing for family members, or feudal master-subordinate relationship or even husband wife until 150 or so years ago.

Japanese culture didn’t become truly unique until they invented senpais a hundred years ago, that’s a fact

And my point when quoting SpoonyViking is about cases where context matters (with all 3 words I listed and dot dot dot aka more down the line) so much that you can find uncomfortable to translate so you keep the word, which is also the problem with sousha. Heck due to the very complicated usage of pronouns in Japanese/Chinese and the goddamn furigana troll that authors love to abuse, this problem is the root of many problems you see in translation.

Senpai is not even unique in addressing ppl base on your interpersonal relationship either, you have the suffix -chan, -tan, -kun, -sama, ...etc all widely used base on the level of your intimacy and relationship and those words are usually ignored in translations or they just keep those. So idk why you quoted my reply when we were talking about 2 different things.

Because I had my take on translations? Or did you think I spent all this effort just to prove you wrong for no good reason.

Frankly I think leaving honorifics and stuff like "Nakama" untranslated is dumb. What's the point in even translating the work at all if you're going to leave basic terms completely untranslated?

You did not prove anything. You simply stated an opinion I don't agree with.

You know that they were separated by an "and", right? I wasn't claiming that "Nakama" is an honorific, if that's how you somehow misinterpreted me.

It's kinda hard to translate and most nerds these days are familiar with the term, so you might as well just leave it as is.

As a translator, I'm a firm believer in dynamic equivalence. If "goshujin-sama", for example, carries different connotations depending on the character Tamamo is addressing, you use different English words each time, maybe even pick up the slack somewhere else in the text, but you shouldn't leave it untranslated. I can understand unpaid fan translators not going that extra mile, but the companies responsible for official should strive for better.

(I'm not pointing fingers at anyone. I haven't even played "Extra".)

The dub have Sakura just calling him Shiro, and i think is the best they could do if they will not just leave it . Because..."good morning, senior" in that context sounds off.

But actually i would leave it. I mean,it doesnt matter im a rute where she is not relevant, but in the HF dub, it would feel off to see her calling Shiro by his name when we know she doesnt and its like part of her character
