.…Yeah. I wanted that too, though it can't have been as bad as you guys.
Even after Kiritsugu adopted me.
I went to the burned field often to look at the scenery.
I went to the place where nothing remained, opened the door that didn't exist, walked through the hallway that didn't exist, and smiled at my mother who wasn't there anymore.
…I wanted to return to the days before it happened.
I awaited the day when I would wake from this bad dream.
That didn't happen and I accepted reality.
But if I could obtain a world where it didn't happen and where nobody got hurt, that would certainly be

.Why did it happen?
I went to bed, closed my eyes, and said good night… but in the next instant, my world turned red.
It's hot.
My mom woke me up before the loud noises did.
It was bright even though it was night-time.
My dad held me as he ran through the burning hallway.
It's painful.
I heard my mom's voice behind us.
My dad told me I should be fine by myself.
He patted my head and told me to wait here.
I nodded and did as I was told.
It hurts.
It wasn't much different outside.
My eyes were hurting because everything was red.
That's why I closed them and ran. I wanted to go to a place that wasn't hot.
When I looked back, my house was no longer there.
I probably got punished because I didn't do as I was told to.

."It was a dream."
I sigh with relief in my futon.
How many years has it been since I sighed with relief after seeing a nightmare?
"…But… that was a vivid dream."
My temples feel hot.
I used to have this nightmare all the time.
…It all happened ten years ago.
Back then, my memories of the event were still terribly vivid, and I would wander through the fire every time I fell asleep.
I thought I would never be able to forget about that day.
That sky, the smell of the burning air, the surrounding wall of fire… Everything was real again once I fell asleep.

That's... that writing really needs to be clear. I remember reading that and assumed that Shirou had amnesia and was just imagining things he wanted to remember. PTSD's symptoms are like that anyway, being unable to recall anything of the trauma or before the trauma.
So Avalon changed his Origin, but he never had amnesia. Got it.

Does anyone feel like Gil's later characterizations in CCC & FGO were sort of written to try to distance him from the characterization in FSN where he's an attempted rapist, attempted the complete extermination of humanity that would make Goetia proud, and a loli/child killer?
I sort of dislike how it seems they've been going "No no, he's actually a sort of nice guy. He was just a little cranky in FSN."
It's like they have to retcon or explain away all of the business in FSN. What was the point of using Gil as the villain?

In CCC he still says he'd take Saber by force, so
He doesn't want to wipe out humanity in CCC because they suck less or something. Which seems weird to me since the Harway's were supposedly keeping the world in stagnation but w/e
FSN Gil = maximum asshole because reasons
CCC Gil = still an asshole but a little more mellow because reasons related to above aren't present
Casgil = too busy to be asshole, got shit to do

I mean, Gil's in the moon cell and not really surrounded by humanity in CCC.
He probably doesn't care much about humanity's fate/isn't as bothered by it because he doesn't have to live among them and see their redundancy/lack of importance on an individual level.
It's less of "Gil's not an asshole" and more of "Gil doesn't care"

Currently (like, actually) finishing Apocrypha 3
Yeah he just wanted to kill "the weak" and only the survivors being "the strong"
or something like that
not total genocide, just mostly genocide!
His core personality remains the same throughout his appearances. It's just that the goals and motivations he has changes.
And tbh?? Uruk was such a nice place, it was totally reasonable for Gil to flip out imo

Heroic Spirits kind of have a somewhat alien sense of morality just by virtue of being born from so long ago. Gil is one of the most blatant examples, but Cu is perfectly willing to shank an innocent guy through the heart and then have a beer with him the next day. It's not that their motivations are inconsistent per-se, just that they're complex and do not line up so easily with how moderners conceive of "good" or "bad".
Obviously that's not to say Heroic Spirits can't be traditionally "good", but as in real life, there's the danger of applying modern moral standards to heroes born from centuries past.
It kinda ties into Extra's "only those living in the present can dictate the future" thing
FSN Gil was living in the present so he got directly involved, Extra Gil is content to just watch humanity do its own thing
Does that mean that no matter what he learned over the course of the Fourth War, he wouldn't start really caring about the state of humanity unless and until the Grail ralphed on him?
O walls, you have held up so much tedious graffiti that I am amazed you have not already collapsed in ruin.
True. I just feel sort of irritated mostly because the later stuff about Gil kinda feels retconney. It's not actually a retcon but it does feel like they're trying to cover up just how bad his intro to the franchise was in FSN.
I get the feeling Cu has been more consistently portrayed compared to Gil. I guess I feel like TM is trying to say "oh this baby eater who you saw devouring babies in our earliest work with him, he's actually a nice guy. He just had a terrible afternoon in that early work." Yeah look, first impressions count and unfortunately, they don't look good with Gil.
