Jeanne is the French form of Joan, yes. To be more correct, Jehanne—this was the name she was known by at the time and what she chose to sign her letters with. "Joan" (and Jeanne) came later.

I prefer Jehanette myself. Jehanette being what her parents named her.

I think they went with Jeanne because as Raff pointed out it's cuter.
