Acca 13 was surprisingly good. Feels like how Joker Game should have felt. Also we find out what happened to Maes Hughes after he died, apparently he died his hair green.
Hand Shakers has more obvious bad CG than Tokyo Ravens. Seriously those chains and gears are hilarious to see. They really improved character animations, but the backgrounds are lacking so far behind it looks like a photoshop. Both are good work, but the styles clash so obviously. Just go back to making K and Seitokai Yakuindomo. The chase theme was pretty good though, sounds a bit like the P5 theme.
Maid Dragon looks ok. Kobayashi is cute.
KonoSuba remains hilarious. Loved that interrogation scene.

So, I watched the first episode of Hand Shakers yesterday morning. It certainly was... something. Characters were mostly of the blandly inoffensive variety (the flamboyant professor was far and wide the most entertaining, and he only got like two minutes of screen-time) and plot was basically your typical JRPG/LN formula of "random boy comes across mysterious girl and unlocks ~supernatural powers~ to protect her" with the serial numbers filed off, so the show's uniqueness rests heavily on its highly distinctive and hyper-detailed animation style.

Which, alas, is just as often a curse as it is a blessing.

While some shots in the episode (such as the opening pan over the city) were undeniably cool, other times the pointlessly self-indulgent camera tricks (why hello there, random fisheye lense in the first five minutes) and frankly bizarre anatomy on display (boobs do not bounce that way!) came off as more insufferable then entertaining. Most damningly of all, the show's visual style utterly fails to lend any kind of excitement or freneticism to its battle scenes (well, more like one stretched out scene that takes up about the latter half of the episode).

In fact, there's a peculiar paradox to this show's action. While undoubtedly a ton of stuff is going on in nearly every shot of its climactic fight, somehow the scene itself ends up feeling strangely "quiet" and lacking in any real impact. The first big brawl in a shonen series like this should make the audience want to pump their fists and shout "Hell yeah!", while Hand Shakers didn't inspire even a twinge of adolescent enthusiasm in my heart no matter how many explosions, death-defying charges or garish CGI chains it threw out (and by golly, I hope those chains were just that one villain's weaponry rather then a recurring visual motif). It all adds up to a show that somehow manages to feel like less then the sum of its parts. So, for challenging the dominant metaphysics of composition, studio GoHands receives a hearty 10/10 from me. For crafting a show that's actually enjoyable to watch... not so much, alas.

On the plus side storyline-wise: the overarching mythology of Nimrods, Ziggurats and what-not could develop into something interesting (I do appreciate the minor symbolic touch of having the first "Nimrod" user to show up on-screen be a self-proclaimed "hunter"). While "demure silent girl who's super-dependent on the MC to save her" is a dime-a-dozen archetype in anime, Koyori's life literally being dependent on holding Tazuna's hand is at least somewhat of a unique take on that rather staid premise (though the manga Double Arts did the exact same thing), and I'm kind of curious as to just where that'll lead. I might just check out the second episode when it comes out just to see where the show goes from here but as it is, with a singularly uninspiring fight, hit-and-miss animation style and boring characters, I can't exactly say this is a show I'm eager to keep watching.

Sigh. And to think, when I first saw the previews for this show I thought it might be one of the best of the winter season (at least, visually).

Goes to show how first impressions can lead to disappointment, I suppose.
