In my experience, a big motivation behind self-harming and/or suicidal thoughts is the sensation of being trapped or, to a lesser extend, a loss of control. That you can't see any way to get out of the situation you're in other than dying. And I don't think it's too hard to see why today/yesterday's events could cause such a feeling.

i might be a little extream in saying this, but recalling the rise of Hitler which led to systematical purge of Jews in the country despite them being used to discrimination and have lived there for generations might lead to some unwanted connection. Trump's victory is just one trigger, but I do have friends working in HK but still USA national coming down with Anxiety syndrome since they received news from family back home of being harrased or avoided after Trump's victory. I think it is over reaction, but I have never been a minority so you never know.
