The Student Council Room/“The War Room”

Public opinion of the Student Council varied, but for the most part, they were seen as the untouchable, diligent workers for Akashi, and the majority of them had such poise and presence as to appear far above the people they were meant to serve.

On the other hand, the public had never attended a Student Council meeting. Regardless of their diligent nature, the fact remained that the Student Council was composed of teenagers, and having teenagers attend morning meetings tended to fare poorly for all. Case in point: the Student Council President, Amagase Kyrie, was badly trying to stifle a yawn just now, her head precariously close to the table. Perhaps, if you waited it out, she’d fall asleep and the meeting would be canceled?

Well, considering how everyone else was at least a bit more awake, that was unlikely. Out of the eleven Student Council members present, at least three seemed to be at ease in the morning: the two Kendo Club representatives, Mitsurugi Tsubaki and Miyamura Tomoe, and the Treasurer himself, who was, as usual, over beside the kitchenette in the corner, getting something that would wake the President up.

The Student Council “room” was much more than that—one got the impression it was simply a remodeled apartment loft that happened to have a large meeting table in it. Work was leisurely done on couches rather than hard desks, and it had all sorts of luxuries, like the aforementioned kitchenette, a private restroom with a shower, and more.

A cup of hot chocolate appears in front of the dead-looking president, and she takes it with a drowsy sounding “Thanks.” As soon as she takes a sip, her eyes light up, and you wonder what kind of concoction could do that to a person. Straightening herself up, she clears her throat as Mishiro teleports back to his chair, his job done.

“Is everyone here?” She says, scanning the table. There are only eleven, and as usual, the only person missing is—

“Excellion’s late. Screw it, just start without him,” Vice-President Shirogane swears under his breath, and everyone quickly comes to the conclusion that waiting for Entramallis would be a huge waste of time.

Today’s topic was about club budgets, which drew the ire of nearly everyone involved. These meetings never boiled down to shouting matches, of course, but considering over half of the Student Council were club representatives of some sort, it certainly got quite heated. Tadokoro, who had looked dead when you entered, was absolutely awake at this point, trying to defend her club with the utmost passion. The others were in various states of acceptance and resignation, but almost everyone knew the gracious club budgets for Akashi would take a hit to prepare for hosting future Gemstone tournaments the populace seemed to be enamored with.

“Katsuji-chan? Konoe-chan?” The Student Council President raises her voice a bit to catch your attention, as a folder appears in front of each of you, teleported by Mishiro’s hand. “Seeing as you two aren’t closely affiliated to the other clubs, would you mind breaking the news to them later today? You’t have to do all of them, of course, but I feel it would be best if you two did it, as it would look the most impartial.”

She gives you a radiant smile that was like the sunrise on a cold morning.

    The Streets of Akashi

You were late to the meeting, as your phone planner told you. You couldn’t remember why this meeting was specifically on your planner, or why it needed six reminders, but the fact was you overslept and now you were late. Thinking about it, you probably forgot to set your alarm clock. That was it, wasn’t it?

You weren’t surprised you forgot, but you were surprised you made a good guess at what you forgot during a period that you had already forgotten. That was a medal worthy task, in your opinion.

Now you were making a mad dash in the streets, hoping that your phone’s GPS could keep up with your speed. In your other hand, you gingerly held a bowl of cereal, milk and all, trying to figure out how would put your phone back in your pocket so you could eat. The Student Council Room had a kitchenette, you had written on your mini fridge in your dorm room, so you knew exactly where to put the bowl when you were done.

Sadly, your goal of eating breakfast on the go was interrupted.

In front of you was some stranger you had never seen before, but he was in your way and for once you didn’t immediately run him over, probably because you needed to protect your cereal.

“EXCELLION ARCADIA ENTRAMALLIS!” the man screams at the top of his lungs, the throes of misguided, passionate youth in every word, “I DEMAND A FAIR AND HONORABLE DUEL, OR YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT TO CLASS.”

With that, he takes a stance and draws his Vector Armament, a simple shinai. You don’t even know how he knows your name or how he managed to cut you off, but the fact is, he did it, even though you decided to go around a few alleys instead of the normal road to school. While you were in a rush, most people seemed to think that you ruined the main road, and thus you were forbidden from using it.

The students in the area take this as a sign to scram, although a brave few pull out cellphone cameras.

    “SO WHAT WILL IT BE?”

Even if you didn’t know it at the time, this was a momentous occasion.

This was a rematch for the title of the Thirty-Fifth Saint.

    The Saints’ Cradle

Nobody was quite sure how the Saints’ Cradle ended up with its name, which was apparently a reference to one of the best mecha anime of all time (if the word of Tadokoro Chihaya was to be trusted). The name befit its stature, though, and the elegant white building, decked with every state of the art comfort known to man, was made to cater to the whims of the elite of the elite. In other words, the dorm for the Forty Saints of Akashi coddled them to a ridiculous degree, to the point where some had simply found their own lodging because it was just too unerringly perfect.

Or, perhaps, they didn’t want to live in such close proximity to their rivals.

You, however, had a different problem. Maria Ikazuchi-Reylander lived in these dorms. It was in your best interest and better for your mental health that you avoided seeing her, so you forced yourself to wake up earlier every day just so you could get to school unscathed by her presence. Maria, you knew, liked to sleep in and she always arrived at school on the dot. Going early, while a pain in the ass, beat the alternative of being late and risking the ire of the Public Morals Committee.

And that’s how you ended up here, on the road to school.

The road to Akashi’s prestigious main academy was well-kept, despite the fact very few people used it. Judging by design, it was tailor made to funnel in the elite students of the Saints’ Cradle while keeping them relatively undisturbed from the rest of the world—there were no alleyways to sneak away in, just the constant presence of white brick at your sides. Boring, monotone, but relatively safe. Just what most people wanted when they walked to school, much like you were doing now.

On the other hand, the glossy pane spanning the entire street was new.

You abruptly stop and turn around, because the slightly shimmering wall is in your way and you can vaguely remember who would be the cause. Said cause gives you a half-hearted smile with a quick wave when you see her, blonde ponytail swishing with every step. Hoshizora Midori, the Twenty-First Saint. The wary girl who had managed to end up being a rank above you.

“Hey,” she says, her eyes not looking at you, but rather, past you. She awkwardly stuffs her hands in the pockets of her blazer, biting her lip, before she opens her mouth again. “I don’t wanna hold up the line here, but you mind if we talk?”

Her voice manages to maintain an even tone, but she only takes hesitant steps towards you.

“I’d ask later, but I think it requires a bit more immediacy than that.” Midori sounds a bit defeated as she says this. You glance behind you. The clear barrier, Midori’s hallmark, is still in place. It seemed that escape was not an option, despite the lack of forcefulness in her words.

    Class 2-S

You sit in the second seat from the back next to the window. Your classmates are comprised of quite a few Saints and the smattering of students in the top five hundred. Your homeroom teacher is the kind of woman who drones on about her awful love life, yet still manages to give you everything you need on the exam. Every desk has a built in tablet and are quite comfortable, as much as a school desk could be. The class atmosphere isn’t very tense, despite the Placement Tournament approaching.

All in all, you were in a pretty decent class, and that’s probably why your sister urged you to come to school early, to make the best of good situations. Aika always had that problem of living through you, but putting more effort into your social life for her probably wasn’t a bad thing.

That’s why you were sitting here, listening to the awkward rumor mill Minase Yurina and fellow delinquent Toramaru Shun chat about whatever came to mind. Shun sat behind you and was the kind of guy who rarely used his brain until he was in a pinch, whereas Yurina sat to your right and managed to overhear all sorts of unlikely things that somehow turned out to be true. Maybe they weren’t the most ambitious to hang out with in Akashi—but they had your back when you needed it.

“C’mon, Yurina, there’s no way that’s true.” You’re not sure what the conversation is about now, but judging by Shun’s slightly condescending tone, it had probably taken a turn for the weird.

“Wouldn’t that explain how we all lost to the Americans in the last world tournament, though? Besides, there have been the more recent efforts to procure more funding into the JSDF, and to a foreign nation that would be worrying…” Yurina stares at her desk in thought, the touchscreen filled with various articles about the latest celebrity gossip, although something about American-Japanese relations is there as well.

“I think the idea there’s an American spy amongst the Saints is completely retarded. Back me up, Mark, unless you’re the spy in question?” Shun gives Yurina an incredulous glare and shrugs his shoulders, looking at you to provide a third party opinion. Now that the idea has been said, however, Yurina’s eyes goes wide as she flails about, before she tries shrinking into her chair ineffectively.

After a brief moment, she suddenly straightens up and starts babbling. “Did you know we’re getting a transfer student today? I heard she’s half-British and super hot and maybe she’d want to date you or me or something?”

She says this so quickly that it is only through much exposure to similar situations that you can actually parse out what Yurina is saying.

    Civitas Headquarters

You moved out of the dorms as soon as you were able. Living in something so… excessive and clearly unequal had bothered you to no end, and you had made Civitas headquarters your place of residence. Unlike the luxurious rooms of the Saint’s Cradle, your residence was much more spartan, focused on the bare essentials. If your message was to resound clear and true, you could be nothing like those you fought against.

Speaking of those who were in your way, they had become increasingly more prominent as the school year had progressed. A Civitas rally would almost inevitably attract some sort of conflict, like the one two weeks ago, which had escalated into a fight when a more hotblooded youth assaulted a member of the Public Morals Committee over barbed words. While dealing with the fallout was a tad difficult, in the end both the Alliance and Public Morals Committee were put on the backfoot—that riot had taken more out of both than either suspected.

Regardless, despite the quiet lull afterwards, Civitas still had its fair share of problems.

“Misuzawa-sama, I’d like to report that there has been more acts of vandalism staining this building in that awful red color. In addition, someone has woken up early enough to come here and request for your help, if you are willing. Other than that, the public seems to be recovering from that unfortunate incident, so perhaps it’s time for another display?” Your secretary, Yamato Ken, rattles off a list of things, trying not to sound too opinionated. He was a Kendo Club student who had worked his way up to this with a determined diligence, and like you, he would not yield. An incident in his middle school years had made him come to loathe Akashi, and it was through this mutual hatred you two bonded.

“If there is anything you want done or addressed today, I’ll make sure it happens,” he says, with an oddly professional tone.

    ???

The sun was streaming through the windows, and as you groggily got up, you began to realize that no, you did not decorate your room with frilly purple curtains and lace. Tragically, you remember this is not the first time you have been moved into one of the guest-exclusive rooms of the Maze of Lilies, nor would it be your last. Would it kill Nao to make such arrangements when you were awake, with your permission?

At least the accomodations were as top-notch as ever, with only the fluffiest of pillows and the most silken of sheets. Nao prided herself on providing luxury to those in great need, and she would not skimp out on providing. Sometimes people just needed the company of a pretty girl, Nao thought, and in this morally dubious crusade she had done much more than what anyone had expected.

Thoughts of going back to sleep creep into your mind, but you brush them off. Duty first. Coincidentally, the door to your room opens at the same time—revealing a familiar face dressed up in the maid uniform you only have seen her wear.

“Ah, you’re up, Master. Lady Nao has scheduled a meeting later this morning, but it will put your attendance record at risk. Should I inform her that you have no intention of skipping class? Or would you like to do it yourself, seeing as you’ll at least be staying for breakfast?”

The personal maid Nao has assigned to you greets you with a casual cheer unbefitting of someone who is meant to serve, and she puts her hands behind her back, impatiently swaying back and forth. She looks at you expectantly, waiting for your command.

“Though if you want to be late for other reasons,” she says with a cheeky wink, “I can tell Lady Nao you had ‘business’ to attend to.”

    “The Office”

There’s not much sound in the office other than the scratching of pens. Mornings had been decreed by Director Kuroiwa to be for daily briefings and processing the various rules violations that Gemstones seemed to accrue over time. An “easy” start to the day, intended to spare them from rigorously using their brain before school. Whether or not it was successful in being that leisurely was another story, but here you three were, fiddling with paperwork.

The tranquil silence is ruined by the ticking of Mitarai’s toaster. For as long as you’ve known her, she’s routinely made buttered toast every day, at every conceivable hour possible. Try as you might, she insisted that this analog antique was necessary for “the proper way to make toast.” It was quite possibly the greatest distraction in the entire room that wasn’t a person, if one was honest.

That is, until the door burst open, accompanied a loud scream of “I’m late!”.

Mishiro Akari frantically waved her bandaged arms as she made a beeline for her desk, wincing as she did so. She was most known for her love of Disney memorabilia, her desk coated with every single souvenir from Tokyo Disney one could think of. But, most importantly…

“Glad to hear you’re feeling better,” Mitarai said, not looking up from her stack of papers as the toaster went off with a loud ding.

...Akari was hospitalized in a physical and destructive incident with Kitamura Kaede during a riot, and after a week of recuperation, she was finally free. Though, judging by how her movements seemed a bit sluggish and how even her hands still had noticeable bandages, those wounds still hadn’t completely healed.

“How’s everyone?” Akari says, trying to keep up her cheer. Mitarai slathers butter on her toast, her gloved hand deftly manipulating the silver knife, and mutters an “I’m doing well.” It’s the lack of other responses that makes you realize both Director and Vice-Director are missing this morning.

“Now that you’re here, I have a pair of cases for the all of you,” Mitarai says loudly as she gets up from her chair, before taking a bite of her food. Wordlessly, you get up and crowd over to her desk. “Orders from the Kuroiwa-san and Masahide-san, who are busy inspecting the venues for the Placement Tournament. Kimura-san is with them, leaving us five.”

“One of you is to help Mishiro-chan find Kitamura, as she has been missing for a few days and we do not condone skipping class.” She glances at Mishiro, who hangs her head low and looks a bit deflated about her new assignment. “The other two need to see what happened to Fumizuki Minami.”

She points to a desk that looks like it is in need of cleaning. It was rather spartan and professional looking compared to the more colorful desks that it’s surrounded by. Fumizuki was a fellow coworker, but she had been missing for a while, where the last thing you heard was some rumor that they were insanely ill. Though, if you were being asked to investigate…

“We want to get this matter cleared up before the Placement Tournament begins, so please do devote effort to this as soon as possible. I’ll deal with all your papers in the meantime, but feel free to call me if you find a lead. Are there any questions?”

Finishing her piece of toast, she looks at you expectantly, like a parent who hopes their children do well at a recital.

    Hana's Room

Hana was standing in front of a large wall mirror, her body stiff and stare strict. She had already finished dressing up, wearing her school uniform coupled with black thigh highs as a personal note. The student council meeting wasn't for another thirty minutes, leaving her with plenty of time. Moments passed. She was still standing in front of the mirror, just looking at herself. She almost seemed nervous, but could anyone fault her for that? After all, she was about to face one of her worst enemies.

Suddenly, clenching her fists, Hana exclaimed something with extreme determination. “Good morning!” ... No, that was way too stoic, she thought. Loosen up a bit. Smile. “Good morning!” Another attempt, followed by a long sigh. Her greeting came off as more of a war declaration than anything. Maybe she was approaching this the wrong way. If she imagined greeting just anyone, there wasn't much to be happy about in the first place. However, if she were to think of someone she liked, then maybe this could work. Taking a deep breath, she closed her eyes. Someone she'd like to be more friendly around... this was harder to think of than it seemed. Oh, there was someone – the person she thought of would probably laugh at her if she knew what Hana was doing here in the morning. To that person, talking to other students came naturally. That person seemed to radiate with warmth and energy, but also have the strength to be strict if need be. If there was someone Hana looked up to, it was definitely her.

Hana stared back at the amber eyes of her mirror image yet again. This time, having the one she admires in mind, she would surely succeed. Smile! “Good morning, Amagase-senpai!”

As she stood there, her smile frozen in motion, the girl realized exactly how awkward and embarrassing standing in front of her mirror talking to herself was, the color of her cheeks quickly starting to show how flustered the situation made her. Hiding her embarrassment, she turned around, grabbed her school bag from the table behind her and swiftly got on her way. Tch, what a waste of time. She'd arrive at the meeting too early again after all.

    6:30 AM
The Student Council Room/“The War Room”

Opposite to the seat of the Student Council President, Hana sat upright in her's, posture as elegant as ever. Unsurprisingly, she never seemed to mind their early morning meetings, so much so that some had even concluded that getting up this early was normal for her, Student Council or not. It didn't help that she seemed to show up too early almost everyday. That didn't mean that lazy mornings like this had absolutely no effect on her, though. When almost everyone around her was nearly falling asleep, it was hard to stay motivated even for someone like her. Currently, she was gazing through the room empty-minded.

“Katsuji-chan? Konoe-chan? Seeing as you two aren’t closely affiliated to the other clubs, would you mind breaking the news to them later today? You’t have to do all of them, of course, but I feel it would be best if you two did it, as it would look the most impartial.”
Immediately upon hearing her name called by the President, Hana looked straight towards her, only to be greeted by her warm smile. For a second, it almost looked like Hana was dumbstruck, her mouth making the slightest motion only to close again. I've already managed it once today, she told herself. Just let loose and smile. ... Ahh, why can't it be that simple! Quickly averting her gaze, she turned to look at the folder in front of her. “Of course.” A very matter of fact tone. In the end, she didn't manage to smile back.

The other girl called up to the task, Katsuji Hisa, was a fellow high-rank Esper, and that was about the extent of what Hana knew about her. This would be the first time the two of them worked together on something as a duo. To Hana, it didn't actually matter how close they were. She wasn't here to make a new friend or anything. “Amagase-san, do you want us to split up and handle each club individually or go together? I know it's an uneven number so one of us would have to do more work if we split up, but I wouldn't mind that.”

It was easy to daydream when they put you so close to the window.

Head resting on his hand, and gaze fixed in an absent-minded sort of way on the distant clouds, smiling in the usual way as he listened to his friends bicker amongst themselves. Having been chased out of bed a bit earlier than usual thanks to his sister's compulsive need to make sure his social life didn't devolve any further than it had over his previous hospital stay, the blonde-haired youth, a blatant foreigner when compared to most of the student body, can only react with a sort of amused chuckle as a casual accusation is thrown his way.

"I wouldn't say a spy is impossible... But I'm also pretty sure they'd be caught pretty quickly, and I don't think any of the Saints are willing to commit that sort of social suicide. A traitor would get jumped pretty much instantly once exposed, and Saint or not, pretty sure the crowd would win that sort of thing."

Ultimately, he had just responded with what was on his mind. The accusation didn't bother him, nor did the things Yurina had been unintentionally implying with her words, so he had just answered honestly and left it at that, in essence, he figured that it was:

    Possible, but not likely.

It could almost be considered sitting on the fence, refusing to side with one or the other, but he liked to just think that he didn't disregard possibilities so easily, after all...

The world was a weird place.

Still, keeping an amused but warm smile on Yurina as she sinks into her chair in an ineffectual attempt to make herself disappear, the blonde youth nevertheless finds himself blinking in mild surprise when she shoots back to life, suddenly firing words at him like some sort of verbal assault rifle. If it had been anyone else, they probably would have just stared for a bit before asking her to repeat it, but in his case...

    "...Nope. Can't say I have."

He responds with the usual blunt honesty.

"But half-British and super hot eh?" Grinning, the young man laughs to himself, "Funny how those are the things people latch onto... Still, let's wait and see what her personality's like before we get too excited eh?"

While he definitely could have poked fun at her in a couple of different ways thanks to her choice of words, Mark just lets it go like that. It was a response that wasn't too good from a gossiping point of view, but...

    Thankfully, or perhaps, unluckily...

"Yeah, might as well wait. All prospective girlfriends have to get past me first anyway!"

Aika chose this moment to appear.

Swooping in as if from nowhere, a mischievous glint in her eye, and a smile on her face, the dark-haired girl nevertheless means everything she had just said as she stands at her brother's side, one hand on his shoulder, other brushing aside her hair. Recently discharged from the hospital along with him earlier in the year, the girl that was still not a student at Akashi had nevertheless garnered a sort of reputation for always being close to her adoptive brother. A bit pushy at times, and definitely a little clingy, if you saw one of the Matsuoka siblings, chances are that 'the other one is just hiding around the corner somewhere.'

"Nii-san is too nice, so some girls would take advantage of him in a heartbeat, soooo I gotta check em for him," saying things that Mark automatically opens his mouth to deny, but is stopped by her putting her hand over his mouth, the ebony-haired girl nevertheless winks at Yurina, "You're good though, Minase-san, I trust you~"

Hmmm, paperwork and sorting papers... I would've been perfectly fine with this, but most unfortunately, Ryoutan isn't here! Horrible, most horrible! Ah... I wonder where he could've gone? Maybe that Souichiron and him have some important business to attend to? Or maybe that the Big Boss went with Ryoutan to go do their early morning rounds or something.... gah, I should stop thinking about that or else I'll never be done with this paperwork!

Yep, gotta remember what happened last time when I did a bunch of mistakes and mixed up those student names... got the wrong people in trouble even! Awawa, thinking of Ryoutan scolding me... maybe it's not that bad. Wait, what the hell am I saying, that's bad, absolutely bad!

Oh, oh, oh! If it isn't Akarin! Let's greet her with a big hug, right as she runs by my desk!

    "Heeeeyyyy, welcome back Akarin!"

A big jump and a big hug for my good old friend-- waitie doopsie!
Phew, that was close... had to stop myself in midair. Don't want to randomly hurt her with too tight of a hug, so just stopping short of her and giving her a big warm smile should be more than enough from yours and truly, Larissa-chan!

"Heheh, I see that you're already back up and kicking, that's my good'ol Akarin for you, tough as nails!"

Motivational speech and breaking the awkward silence is always good, yes yes yes~ I mean, some people might shoot me these strange glares, but if we really want to be efficient at our jobs, we should get a nice mood going in the workplace too! I'm sure Akarin's with me on that subject... right?

Winky winky Akarin? What do you say? I know that a big smile and a wink is kinda hard to understand when it comes out of nowhere, but being a fellow friend, surely you can make out what I'm asking without me needing to talk, rightie?!

Hmmm, people missing left and right, that's indeed a case for super detective Larissa-chan to solve! Luckily I don't seem to be on board for the 'let's motivate Kae-chan' train! Good thing for me, I hate dealing with hard-headed people... though, I sort of understand her I guess: class does get boring after you've spent enough time stuck in there... but well, she kinda doesn't have the grades to afford skipping!
Eh, Natsumin would probably hang me on the spot if she read my thoughts, so I should wipe that grin off my face, yes yes I should...!

"Hmm, there is only one question to ask Natsumin: who's gonna go looking for Minamin with me?!"

    Misuzawa Malik
    6:32
    Civitas Headquarters - Malik’s Room

A lazy haze of steam rose from the cup in his right hand as Malik Misuzawa looked out of the window of his rather basic room. The street below was, as usual, buzzing with activity. Normally, one would expect the streets to be quite empty at this early hour, but this was hardly the case here. After all, the main campus of the Akashi Educational Institute was right across the street. The presence of the gigantic “school” meant that there was always some activity on the street below, even during the night hours. Forty thousand students studied, dreamed and lived in the buildings across the street.

And the vast majority of them faded to irrelevance there, not even existing in the eyes of their peers or teachers.

A curt knock echoed throughout the room.

    “Enter.”

Normally, Malik Misuzawa disliked overt professionalism. It reminded him too much of home and the endless rows of passionless workers who toiled away at the Tower - the Misuzawa Corporation headquarters. Not only that, too often such dispassion was just a mask to hide one’s true intentions. True passion, on the other hand, was much harder to fake. And hide, for that matter. But Yamato Ken was different. Malik could see his emotions. The cold fury and passion lurking behind those blue eyes. The curt politeness was merely a tool that the other boy used to focus and restrain his intense emotional drive.

In that regard, the two of them were quite alike.

“Aah. Good morning, Yamato-kun. Coffee? Though I must admit that morning’s blend didn’t come out quite as well as I hoped. A tad too acidic, I’m afraid. Still, it is more than suitable...”

As usual, Ken merely responded with a curt shake of his head. No matter how many times Malik offered it, his secretary would never accept his offer for a morning coffee. That didn’t stop Malik from brewing a full pot every morning, even if half of it ended up being wasted. After all, at one point his secretary might actually accept his offer. Turning away from the window and sitting down behind the, rather basic, wooden table, the young leader of Civitas motioned his secretary to continue with their standard morning briefing.

“Misuzawa-sama, I’d like to report that there has been more acts of vandalism staining this building in that awful red color. In addition, someone has woken up early enough to come here and request for your help, if you are willing. Other than that, the public seems to be recovering from that unfortunate incident, so perhaps it’s time for another display?”
Haa… again? Even if they were useful, there comes a point where the hassle is simply not worth it anymore.”

This type of minor vandalism had become more and more common over the last few weeks, ever since that debacle of a riot. In the beginning, it was easy to roll the entire incident into some useful PR. After all, Civitas in at the moment was mostly focused on non-violent protest. Vandalization of Civitas property only gave the general public the impression that their opponents lacked an actual credible argument. By this point, however…

Malik took a sip of his steaming coffee

“This has gone on long enough. At this point, it's been repeated enough to not even be newsworthy anymore. It's also unlikely that anyone of actual importance is related. But you might never know. That riot might have ruffled more hairs at the Public Morals Committee than I initially thought.”

The white-haired youth fell into thought for a brief second, his fingers drumming the wooden surface of the kitchen desk in front of him.

“Yamato-kun. I want you to report this case of vandalism to the Public Morals Committee. It's their job to uphold law and order, no? Tell them that for all intents and purposes, I should call the police, as this building is non-Institute property. But as this incident is likely to be related to the students of the Institute, I am willing to give them some time to resolve the matter.”

“After all, it would be horrible if gemstone-related vandalism at Akashi were to show up in the evening news. It might actually harm the school's reputation, particularly keeping in mind the prolific tournaments that we are to host later this year.”

“If nothing else, it will be another instance of their incompetence I can throw at the Board.”

“As for another demonstration...” Malik took another quick sip of his coffee. “Fine. But do impose on them the importance of not falling for cheap provocations this time. To win public support, we need to be the ones being aggressed upon, rather than the aggressors.“

“And pick a few more trustworthy members and have them record the entire thing. If we get any more heckling from Student Council or Committee members, I want to have it on tape.”

Finishing his coffee, Malik placed the empty cup on the desk, rose from the table, and made his way towards the half-open closet at the corner of the rather spartan room. Grabbing the, rather striking, crimson raiment from the closet, the young leader of Civitas affixed it on top of his rather nondescript black suit. Giving a quick glance at the mirror to ensure that everything was in order, the younger boy turned back towards his secretary.

“Well then. Shall we go and provide our help to that wayward lost lamb you mentioned earlier?”

    Minase Mizuru
    6:45 AM
    Guest Room

---It was a dream of the past that he saw, fading all too swiftly in the light of a new day.

Thoughts of going back to sleep creep into your mind, but you brush them off. Duty first.Coincidentally, the door to your room opens at the same time—revealing a familiar face dressed up in the maid uniform you only have seen her wear.

"Ah, you're up, Master. Lady Nao has scheduled a meeting later this morning, but it will put your attendance record at risk. Should I inform her that you have no intention of skipping class? Or would you like to do it yourself, seeing as you’ll at least be staying for breakfast?"

The personal maid Nao has assigned to you greets you with a casual cheer unbefitting of someone who is meant to serve, and she puts her hands behind her back, impatiently swaying back and forth. She looks at you expectantly, waiting for your command.

"Though if you want to be late for other reasons,” she says with a cheeky wink, "I can tell Lady Nao you had 'business' to attend to."
Business? What, like going back to sleep? Mizuru certainly was tempted to, as he stifled a yawn. It took awhile for his half-awake mind to fully process the implications of the maid's words. He really should be used to this by now.

Her presence was a painful reminder of the accommodations he had been put in---rooms for the guests visiting the Maze of Lilies for "company." He could swear Nao was doing this on purpose. Despite the lack of qualms he had displayed in adapting to his new role and contrary to what one might expect, he was somewhat old-fashioned when it came to such things. Of course, he had never voiced any of his misgivings. Nao had made this enterprise her personal mission, and who was he to question that? But it seemed like she saw right through him anyways. This personal maid only strengthened his suspicion.

Come to think of it, he didn't even know the maid's name. Nobody had ever mentioned it, and it had evidently slipped his mind to ask. And now that she's long since become a familiar face, it would be undeniably awkward to do so all of a sudden. So he ended up maintaining this strange status quo. Not that it bothered him too much. In a way, it was easier on him that he didn't know the name of the one who kept hitting on him at inopportune times, like now.

"Tell Nao I'll be there." Whatever her other whimsies, Nao was not one to call upon someone simply to mess with them. If it was business, he was obliged to be there. There wasn't much point worrying about attendance when he was already a delinquent in the eyes of the school for his membership in the Alliance, anyhow.

Still, to think he'd end up in such a place, he reflected as he got up to get his uniform. Long gone was the honor student athlete. In his place was someone who woke up to a room with dubious aesthetics that wasn't even his and a maid with a questionable sense of professional boundaries. Not that he missed his former life; well, the one after coming to Akashi and before his becoming a turncoat, at any rate. He didn't regret giving up any of it, except---an image of a colorless girl briefly surfaces. What would Ruri think of where he was now, he wondered?

He shook aside the thought as he snaps out of his contemplation and waits for the maid to leave the room.

    Katsuji Hisa's 'Room'

If most people would probably break into tears upon seeing the conditions in which Hisa lived for the first time. The word 'spartan' might come to mind and quickly dismissed as too lacking. Desolate might be a better word. Bleak. Oppressive.

A terribly empty room. The only objects was a drawer for Hisa to store her clothes, and a clock for Hisa to keep the time. And of course, Hisa herself, peacefully sitting seiza-style in the center of the room. She faced the clock, patiently watching the time pass. She had an appointment with the rest of the student council today but until then she had nothing to do so she did nothing.

    The Student Council Room

In contrast to the majority of the other members in this room, Hisa was wide awake. However just because she was awake doesn't really mean she had much to do so she satisfied herself with watching and listening to the proceedings.

“Katsuji-chan? Konoe-chan? Seeing as you two aren’t closely affiliated to the other clubs, would you mind breaking the news to them later today? You’t have to do all of them, of course, but I feel it would be best if you two did it, as it would look the most impartial.”
The student president spoke to Hisa, flashing a brilliant smile as a file containing the relevant information materialized in the air in front of her. A warm smile that would warm nearly anybody's heart.

Hisa looked back at the president and without any change in expression, simply nodded to show acknowledgement of the task.

“Amagase-san, do you want us to split up and handle each club individually or go together? I know it's an uneven number so one of us would have to do more work if we split up, but I wouldn't mind that.”
The girl sitting next to her, whom Hisa assumed was Konoe, questioned the president about the details of the task. It didn't matter to Hisa whether she had to do this alone or with someone else. Rather, there was more important matters to attend to. Hisa opened the file and quickly skimmed down the list of clubs. Even though it was true that she was seen as fairly disinterested and thus impartial to the large variety of clubs that Akashi had to offer, there was still a tiny part of her that was relieved to see that a certain club did not end up on the budget chopping block list.

    The Saints’ Cradle

With a flick, Jun cycled through meticulously organized emails. Like every morning of his third year, his day began with a slow, relaxed walk to school, purposefully extending the commute to read over his newest messages. With another flick he navigated from a contact group labeled “SC D” to “DC D” and began glancing at the subjects of the new texts. The immediately important ones he tapped and opened, skimmed the contents of, and then minimized to move onto the next. Marking two specific emails as favorites, Jun returned to his phone’s home screen.

Buzzing, a notification popped up to tell him of a new email. Cocking an eyebrow, Jun tapped the notification, and walked into the shimmering invisible wall blocking his path.

Thanks to his already snail-like pace it was a highly gentle bump. More like a light poke of his forehead against the wall, and the largest reaction garnered was for him to glance behind his back while pocketing his phone.

“Hey, I don’t wanna hold up the line here, but you mind if we talk? I’d ask later, but I think it requires a bit more immediacy than that.”

Looking back over his shoulder, at the barrier that the 3rd year Jun assumed he wouldn’t be able to bust down even if he wanted to, and he already didn’t want to, he shrugged.

“I can’t remember starting any rumors that I’m refusing inquiries these days, so I can assume you’re not nervous about me saying no. Don’t tell me you’re the shy type? Have trouble talking to your senpais?” Jun laughed at the obvious joke. If anything, #21 was more bothered by having to approach another person at all.

Like any Saint, Jun kept tabs on the Untouchable enough to have an understanding of where she fit into his plans. Which was to say, he barely kept tabs on her activity at all. Truth be told, she might be the only person at Akashi he felt he could relate to, as one content with their lot. Which was exactly why he was surprised to be approached by her at all.

“I’m in no hurry, I can afford to skip classes twice this month, and since you’re such an unexpected client, I’ll put you right at the top of the line.” Jun leaned into the invisible wall, an invisible cushion padding his back as he did so. Lowering his glasses, the young man stared at her. “What do you need, #21, my alike?”

    “The Office”

    I’m craving buttered toast, today.

Unusual, but not unexpected. I don’t think I like the taste myself, but I crave it all the same. It’s an annoying thought— though less intrusive than the others, at least— that I usually never had to deal with. But if I crave it, it could only mean one thing. The Department Head was here today.

Sometimes, one could identify individuals by the combinations of color they’d have about them, color that’d fluctuate, but remain relatively consistent. For the Head, that was a craving for toast, a sense of guilt, and a dislike for me.

I glance up, and she’s there sure enough. She usually didn’t like sharing a room with me, but she’s here today anyway.

Such things normally didn’t stand out, but I suppose that’s just how things were today. In a room full of sleep-deprived high schoolers, nothing else stood out— other than faint annoyance at the ticking toaster, just loud enough to keep you from dozing off; or perhaps regret that one couldn’t stay in bed for a little longer.

Come to think of it, it’s quiet today, and not in the sense of spoken word. Someone’s missing. I blinked.

    —two missing chairs—

Come to think of it, that feeling I’d get whenever Ryota and Larissa were in the same room had been conspicuously absent, too.

I feel her coming before I hear her.

Akari’s back. A burst of noise and color. She tries to act cheerful, but it’s obvious it’s an act. But it’s none of my concern. I just keep at my work, quiet and wordless. She gives us our instructions, new cases that’ve come up, and Larissa chatters away beside me. Random thoughts of Ryota fill my mind. I tune it out by focusing on toast.

I hear words through the noise.

"Hmm, there is only one question to ask Natsumin: who's gonna go looking for Minamin with me?!"
I look up. At Larissa, at Akari, at the Head. I blink, and nod. It means nothing in particular. If they take it to mean I accept, then I accept. If they ignore it and have me take the other, so be it. It doesn’t matter to me. I look down back at my work, and my mind fills with toast.

    “The Office”

If anyone were to ever ask me, then I would say without any hesitation that I enjoy my school life.

And that’s not a lie—my campus life, my interactions with other students, and the sense of fulfillment from carrying out my duties member of the public morals committee—these are all precious aspects of my current life that I would think, are irreplaceable to me. There are, no doubt, countless bad decisions I’ve made in the past—but if I think of those as stepping stones to reach what I have right now, then they were all worth it and I don’t regret any of them.

And so, naturally, when I doze off, or try to lie down on my desk when I think no one else will notice, it’s not because I am suffering, or because I would rather not be here. And it’s definitely not because I disagree with Kuroiwa and prefer to slack off in the mornings. There is absolutely no way that is true.

I’m just not a morning person. The fault lies completely with me.

I understand perfectly why these morning meetings are important, and that my inability to rise and shine is an enemy that I must—will—conquer. But it doesn’t come naturally, and without the highlight of my morning participating in these meetings, it feels exhausting to even keep up the pretense that I am fully alert and awake before 10 AM. If only the president were here…

Thankfully, Akari’s arrival livens up the dull morning of paperwork.

It’s great that she’s feeling better, and I tell her as much. When she asks how we’re all doing, I try my best to look alert and to respond as positively as possible. Part of it is because I like to try to maintain the image of a model worker, but also because I like Akari—she’s straightforward, has her heart in the right place. You could say I was a little envious of her, even.

It doesn’t take much thought to figure out which option suited me best.

“Shall I go with Mishiro-san, then?” I offer, slightly pleased at this turn of events. Paperwork wasn’t really my style- at least, not any more then smacking some discipline into truant students.

Amagase looks slightly bewildered as Hana’s expression rapidly changes, before resuming her gentle, serene expression. “Something on your mind, Hana-chan?”

“Amagase-san, do you want us to split up and handle each club individually or go together? I know it's an uneven number so one of us would have to do more work if we split up, but I wouldn't mind that.”
“Oh, you two don’t need to be together to do this. Splitting up should be fine, as long as you two coordinate and eventually get it done. In fact, I’d be surprised if…” She says with a nonchalant wave, before—

“She’d be surprised if you got it all done, because some clubs are full of insufferable pricks who think that what applies to the Brilliance Ranking applies to acquiring club funds.” Mishiro gives off an exasperated sigh, and a visible wariness briefly seems to coat him. As the Treasurer, there was no doubt he did the bulk of explaining to clubs such as those…

“Er, yes, that.” Amagase looks a bit taken aback at the sudden interruption, but she simply shrugs and gives Mishiro a puzzled look before resuming, voice clear and calm. “If you do need help though, you can always consult Mishiro, Shirogane, and I. Sometimes our names help make ‘things’ that should go down smoothly actually do so.”

There’s a brief pause, President Amagase’s eyebrows furrowed in thought. “Are the two of you alright? You both seem a bit distracted this morning.”

Yurina nearly jumps out of her seat when Aika makes her sudden appearance, and the resulting noise reminds you of a startled cat. Likewise, Shun flinches, but then he starts laughing at Yurina, who quickly grows scarlet, her hands clenching the fabric of her skirt. People turn to look at you, of course, but you’re used to drawing attention like this. Maybe time would mean people also got used to these antics.

"Nii-san is too nice, so some girls would take advantage of him in a heartbeat, soooo I gotta check em for him," saying things that Mark automatically opens his mouth to deny, but is stopped by her putting her hand over his mouth, the ebony-haired girl nevertheless winks at Yurina, "You're good though, Minase-san, I trust you~"
At this point, Yurina makes some muffled sound through closed lips, and once again she reigns supreme as the queen of making really weird noises. She sputters over words for a moment, until she finally manages to make comprehensible sounds.

“I—him—I mean—There’s just no way, I’m not interested in th—but I mean if it was Mark I wouldn’t—No! Don’t even bring up anything like this ever again!” A rush of emotions goes over Yurina’s face, and at the very end it seems like the girl has shut down, fried from the teasing question, and in sore need of repairs.

“Is this a confession of love or somethin’?” Shun says, causing the malfunctioning Yurina to sputter and short-circuit yet again. He nevertheless manages to frown at Aika, though, and the faint smell of something burning hangs in the air for a second. He doesn’t seem to pressure any further, though and instead puts his hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling, trying to relax.

Meanwhile from the corner of your eye, you notice a new face standing in the doorway, peeking at the class. As soon as you make eye contact with her, though, she immediately begins to clean her glasses, as if you hadn’t noticed her watching. Smooth.

    Minase Mizuru

    ???

“You break my heart with every rejection, Master.” The maid makes an offended look and turns away in mock despair. You can hear sniffling and she makes an exaggerated tear wiping motion, but there is the sound of tears hitting fine carpet is conspicuously absent. “Alas! My heart is the finely ground sand of the beach, worn and battered constantly by your waves of indifference.”

For someone who is meant to serve, she sure enjoyed excessively teasing you. She turns around, a wry grin plastered on her face, her eyes sparkling.

“Just kidding! Though, please think of me whenever you believe you need some ‘alone time.’ While you may not be interested in holding a fine young maiden like myself in a tender embrace, you can still think of me as beautiful and desireable, no? Anything less is truly an insult to a woman…” Your maid says this all with a straight face, as if casually chatting with a friend. Shouldn’t Nao reprimand her for such a lack of etiquette? In fact, isn’t such a maid quite the problem? How much of this is just either of them messing with you, anyhow?

“But yes, of course, I’ll relay your message to Lady Nao. I’ll be off now, so have a nice morning, Ma~ster.” She leaves with a skip in her step, as if something great had happened to her this morning.

Though, thinking about it, you have no clue what that could be.

    ------------------------------------------------

When you do decide to leave, the maid is already there, and wordlessly guides you to your destination. The building has hallways that wind and turn, or perhaps is merely decorated to give you that impression. The base of the Maze of Lilies feels just like a labyrinth, and your only hope of escape is a maid who constantly asks you to do indecent things to her. Life is cruel and absurd.

Eventually, though, you make your way to a room at the end of a hall, simply labeled “Dining.” The maid opens the door, and the familiar sight gives you a distinct sense of deja vu. A food cart is already placed beside the small table for two, which is draped in white tablecloth. If it were the evening, it would be perfect for a candlelight dinner. The violet curtains are open, letting light stream through, revealing the sakura trees growing outside. Nao is seated in the right seat, wearing an odd sweater. She gives you a smug look.

The maid guides you to your seat and just as quickly leaves, the door to the room slamming shut. The breakfast made was a Western style breakfast, for Nao simply loved paralleling Ryuusei’s aesthetic. If the leader of the Dragon’s Alliance was as nationalistic as possible, then her second in command would adore the West like no other. Or, you thought, Nao liked bacon way too much.

Before she takes a bite, though, she briefly pauses and looks at you, piercing green eyes scrutinizing something about you.

“You could at least try to look amused, Mizuru-kun. I put so much effort into giving you a show, but is it really all for naught? Even Kaguya-chan cracks a smile…” The sigh that escapes her lips is one of defeat. This is probably the first time you have ever seen the confident woman admit she lost, in fact. Nao glances at the closed door. “Should I switch her out with someone else? She’s quite special, but if you prefer women of another kind…”

Special is quite the understatement, isn’t it?

    Civitas Headquarters - Malik’s Room

“Duly noted, sir. We’ll see if the Public Morals Committee gets anything done.” Yamato’s reply is stiff, but he clearly understands your orders. The mere mention of them seems to get him a bit riled, though, even if his outward demeanor never seems to change. It’s merely just the impatience in his movements compared to his usual calculated precision, but it is there.

“Well then. Shall we go and provide our help to that wayward lost lamb you mentioned earlier?”
“Of course.” He gives you a friendly grin. Yamato Ken was a hands-on man, whether it was through giving direction or doing it himself. Perhaps calling him a control freak was not too far off the mark, but this attribute made him an eager and excellent worker, if quite demanding. And, at the very least, it led to a man who would take responsibility for his mistakes unlike many others you knew.

    ------------------------------------------------

The general room you used for meetings was humble, yet comfortable. Rather than be egregiously lavish, it was humble for the sake of making sure that one of the many common students of Akashi understood they had nothing to fear. In a way, they were talking to Misuzawa Malik, their equal, not the Saint or the member of the Sixteen Jewels. And anyone who sought help needed all the comfort they could get.

The boy in the chair in front of you looked like a nervous wreck. He hadn’t slept well at all, judging by the bags under his eyes, and his uniform was misbuttoned and quite disheveled. Upon first seeing you, his eyes grew so wide and you thought he could have burst into tears right then and there. To him, you were a sign of salvation.

“Thank you oh so very much for taking time to talk to me today!” This comes out in a great rush, and the gratitude in his voice is nothing less than genuine. “H-have you heard of Stigmata?”

    He shudders.

“It’s called that because of its side effects, apparently… but the main draw is that it boosts the strength of your ESP every time you take it. With the placement tournament on the horizon, several of my friends took it from some dealer, and now…”

    He clenches his fists.

“Now I’m not even so sure they’ll make it to late May…”

Midori pouts as you say this, her cheeks flushing a bit red. She straightens up, as if to make herself seem a bit more imposing, but the motion is too forced to give off that impression. Rather, it comes across as kind of awkward and dorky.

“Obviously not,” she says, folding her arms across her chest. The action merely highlights her assets, but that probably wasn’t the intended effect. You briefly wonder what her impression of tough actually is. “It’s just that…”

“It’s just that…” She repeats herself, tapping her foot impatiently, as if the motion would also force the words out. She hasn’t moved an inch since the conversation has started.

“The last time we met. It didn’t go so well. For me.” Her words come out in clipped, quiet breaths, and suddenly, it dawns on you about what she is referring to. Back during the last placement tournament, you had absolutely crushed everyone in your way to the top, and Midori was one of the unfortunate victims. The strongest shield in Akashi smashed by a raging hurricane. Nakiri Jun’s ambition knew no bounds. That’s what they said back then.

With those words in the air, though, she finally gains the courage to walk up next to you, and the transparent wall crumbles like shattered glass, dissipating in the air. Her gaze never meets yours, though, but it seems that for the most part, she’s settled.

“Rumor has it that a member of the Disciplinary Committee has gone missing, and coincidentally, so has Kitamura Kaede, who was involved in that riot from a while back…” Midori tries to sound a bit carefree about it, but the worry in her tone easily overwhelms any sense of forced cheer. “I don’t think Kaede is responsible for it, there’s no way she could be. I just want someone who can keep track of the Public Morals Committee to help me run interference. Help me find Kaede before they find her, throw the PMC off her trail. What if they just jump to conclusions and…”

Kaede’s record was not the cleanest, like any member of the Dragon’s Alliance. And as a member of the Spectrum, Akashi’s color coded gangs, she and Midori both had… unflattering anti-authoritarian reputations. Not only that, but direct harm to a student, not sanctioned by a Ranking Battle, would definitely not be tolerated in the current climate of Akashi. Being a Saint did not make one completely invincible to the rules and laws of society, even if it did seem that way.

In other words, Kaede was the perfect scapegoat for an unexplained disappearance of another student.

    “Please, Nakiri-senpai?”

A brief pause. The man, who was screaming at the top of his lungs, grows quiet. An uncertain chatter surrounds the area. Will you two fight or not? Nobody knows and in this unease, some people start leaving. False alarm, they think.

“I see that you have forgotten my face, as well as what this matter is about.” The green haired man in front of you is like a volcano about to erupt, every word the warning rumble. But he does not lose his composure. No, the fire in his eyes burns all the more intensely. He takes a deep breath, focusing on his goal. “I shall not fight a man who has not had his morning sustenance.”

As you eat your cereal, he pulls out an energy bar from a pocket and starts eating. It is the calm before the storm, where you realize this man is an honorable as they come, protecting your right to eat cereal and even ensuring you do not eat alone. What a nice guy, actually.

“As for what a duel is,” he suddenly says, his voice no longer obnoxiously loud yet serious all the same, “This will be a ranking duel for the position of the 35th Saint of Akashi, which you stole from me during the entrance ceremony.”

You check your phone after cramming the most charms in your mouth for that sugar rush. There is, in fact, an email about it, but it isn’t from you. It’s from the Kendo Club President, which, as a note helpfully reminds you, is also a member of the Student Council.

In the likely case that it fails, just beat the shit out of him.

“Very well then. Hanaoka and Mishiro will go look for Kitamura, and Alexandra and Kogami will look for Fumizuki.” Mitarai repeats it to herself as a confirmation of fact, before procuring two folders from her desk, neatly labeled and color coded. She hands one to Alexandra and the other to Mishiro. What they are is obvious—they are case files, written in her immaculate and refined handwriting, comparable to printed font.

“I’ll just give you the shorthand of what is in those packets. For those tracking down Kitamura, she is, as you know, the ‘Physical Ace’ of Akashi and our star swimmer on the swim team. Her power is the ability to manipulate temperature, as Mishiro can attest. Kitamura frequently is with the other members of the Spectrum, although on her own time, she frequents several arcades detailed on the included map. Also on that map is her dorm room as well as various people of interest you may want to talk to. Like her boyfriend.” Mitarai says this in her usual, detached tone, and it makes you wonder if she just dislikes doing actual legwork, considering she already found out this much. The majority of it is cursory knowledge you could get from anyone, but the approximate schedule was a bit more than expected.

“Gotcha, boss.” Mishiro gingerly holds the packet in her bandaged hands, and she looks at you and gives you a somewhat confident grin. It feels like most of it is show, however, but Mitarai nods in acceptance.

“As for the other two, here is Fumizuki’s profile. The kendo club might be helpful in figuring out her last whereabouts. Other than that, she was a member of Class 2-S, though she didn’t divulge much about her personal life while she was at work, unlike some of you. The last case she was working on is something I will be personally taking care of, details on a need to know basis. Everything clear and straightforward?” This folder is a lot less thick than the other, but various notes have been scribbled in it and there is a surprising amount of detail on what she did mention. Student evaluations, misdemeanor records, who she was likely to talk to, all that.

“We’ll look into this after school, right?” Mishiro interjects, staring at the thick folder in her hands.

“Yes, as usual. Skipping class would be shameful for our record, after all, as members of the Public Morals Committee.” It’s a matter of fact statement. Skipping class was not done if you couldn’t help it. Though, “not being able to help it” happened quite a lot, for some of you.

"Heheh, you can count on yours and truly, Larissa-chan to take care of the job!"

As soon as Mitarai handed out the dossiers, Larissa's hands were quick to snatch them away from her like a predator having caught its prey. This energetic girl's enthusiasm dying down was a prospect that was nowhere in sight, her eyes bristling with life as she had a quick look at the dossier's content. The quantity of said content was perhaps a bit too daunting perhaps, but that was a problem that could be brushed aside for later.

Or so was Larissa Alessandra's train of thought.

"Now, now, let's go solve this mysterious case, Rururin! A friend missing is a friend indeed! Oh, wait wait wait, I mean, in need! Ahem, yes yes..."

Larissa grabbed Ruri by the hand and began leading her out of the office, seemingly lost in her own self-abosrbed world and disregarding any form of protest that the latter or anyone else in the room could have had. If there was any remedy to this one-way trainwreck, if someone wished to put a stop to it... maybe that the typical bopping Larissa on the head would work.

Speaking of which... Larissa totally didn't hear the part about not skipping class. Absolutely not!

“Are the two of you alright? You both seem a bit distracted this morning.”
Hana immediately brushed Amagase's concerns off, going back to her usual composure. “It's nothing.” All previous traces of friendliness left her expression. Evidently, there really was something that had been bothering her that morning, but she didn't see the point in sharing her worries with others, especially not the Student Council President of all people. She knew how she came off to people, how her emotional distance made her seem, but she'd rather appear cold than letting her personal problems pose a burden.

“I'll try getting at least through the Tea Ceremony, Cooking, and Occult Club today. I can't imagine they'd be too hung up over a lowered budget considering the nature of their clubs.” If there were going to be problems, they would most likely be with the sports clubs, she concluded. Her gaze wandered to the clock, glued to it as she went on. “I also happen to know some of the members of the Gardening Club and doubt they'll cause trouble, so I ... tch.” It was almost 7 AM. To her own surprise, this was annoying her more than usual, enough so to make her change the topic in the middle of her sentence.

“I don't understand.” Hana's voice had a faint hint of hostility to it. “Excuse me, but why is Excellion-san even part of the Student Council when he never seems to take this serious?”

“Are the two of you alright? You both seem a bit distracted this morning.”
Distracted? Was she distracted this morning? Or anything distracting her this morning? She reflected for a moment and after nothing came to mind, decided to ignore that comment. What was more important was how much trouble these clubs would give her when she delivered the news. Besides why should they give her trouble anyway? She was just the messenger.

“I'll try getting at least through the Tea Ceremony, Cooking, and Occult Club today. I can't imagine they'd be too hung up over a lowered budget considering the nature of their clubs. I also happen to know some of the members of the Gardening Club and doubt they'll cause trouble, so I ... tch.”
That left Hisa with the drama, tennis, and swim club. Her task seemed straightforward enough to her.

“I don't understand. Excuse me, but why is Excellion-san even part of the Student Council when he never seems to take this serious?”
Her "partner's" words had some hints of hostility in them. However that hostility wasn't directed at her. In other words this next thing had nothing to do with her.

Hisa looked at the time and it about 10 minutes to 7. About the time that clubs that met for morning practice would be packing up and preparing for school. It also didn't feel like there would be much more at this meeting that would be relevant to her so she stood up.

"I'll take the tennis, swimming, and drama club then."

Drama and swimming met after school but if she rushed she could probably catch the tennis club and finish one off the list. Without anything else to add, she turned around and left the room.

    Civitas Headquarters - General Room

    “H-have you heard of Stigmata?”
Aah. That explained the obvious distress of the messy young man in front of him. Malik let out a deep sigh. Stigmata. ESP-boosting substances were always a constant source of trouble for Institute, in more ways than one. It was not as if such substances were particularly rare, some, such as the notoriously rare Hyper-AMP, were even legal to use. No. The issue with the vast majority ESP enhancing drugs were the incredible side-effects typically associated with such substances. Especially the mental instability that almost invariably accompanied the use of such drugs. Which is why the Institute had absolutely zero tolerance for the use of such illegal drugs.

No-one wanted to see a rage-maddened sixteen-year-old blow an entire city block of non-Gemstones to pieces.

    But unfortunately...

“It’s called that because of its side effects, apparently… but the main draw is that it boosts the strength of your ESP every time you take it. With the placement tournament on the horizon, several of my friends took it from some dealer, and now…”
…the most common thing taught by the Institution was desperation. In Akashi, your life was directly correlated to the strength of your ESP. And since most of the legal ESP enhancing tools and substances were almost exclusively restricted to Saints, the only recourse for those bereft of hope was to turn to these illegal methods. Even if the costs were immense and the chance of success almost non-existent.

I wonder how many drugged up students has that president helped in her ivory tower?

The situation was rather troublesome, however. While it's quite probable that he was hearing of this earlier than either the Student Council or the Committee, the scale of this issue was still unclear. How many students were taking this substance? The group related to the man in front of him was one thing, but were there more students like them seeded throughout the Institute? What about the dealer? Was he simply a single agent or was it a wider network? There were simply too many uncertainties.

“Now I’m not even so sure they’ll make it to late May…”
Malik briefly turned his head towards Ken, who was standing briefly in the distance.

Yamato-kun, could see what you can find out this “Stigmata” from our other members?”

As an organization made up mostly from lower-ranking gemstones, Civitas was probably best suited to catch these rumors. In fact, it was quite likely that a few members were already familiar with the existence of this drug but simply didn’t consider it important enough to mention. Not only that, but one could also say that a large number of Civitas members were the prime target market for this kind of drug.

Turning back towards the student in front of him, Malik simply gave the boy an encouraging smile.

“You need not worry. I will do my very best to help you and your friends.” The white-haired boy extended his arm towards the boy across the table. “Not just till May, but beyond that as well.”

“But to do that, I need to ask some questions. Specifically, I need to know the names and dorms of your friends, as well as the name and location of the individual from whom you bought these drugs.”

Mitarai’s investigative ability was, if I was to be frank, a little unnerving. Not that I meant anything rude— her work is greatly appreciated, and I don’t have anything against looking in detail into the lives of my fellow students. That was only natural for an institution to keep order. It was just uncomfortable, personally, how good she was at it.

Not that I ever intended to let her know that, if I could help it. I just try to continue to look alert as she explains the contents of the dossiers, and when she’s finished, stand up and approach Mishiro for our course of action.

“Regarding this case then, Mishiro-san, do you want to meet up after school in front of Kitamura-san’s dorm to handle this? That seems to me to be the most promising location to start with, since it would give us a good grasp of what she’s been up to recently.”

I do my best to give an approachable smile, trying to seem in good and high spirits instead of a statue of molasses. Investigation was supposed to be something I was good at, after all.

“Of course, if you have any other ideas on how to begin, I’m more than welcome to hear it.”

It looked like if he added onto the teasing, it would be a complete system crash.

Smiling, doing his best not to chuckle at Yurina's reaction to his sister's oh-so-casual life changing statements, the light-haired youth resists the sudden urge to see if he can get her to turn completely crimson, instead acting in a way he considered to be a bit more merciful.

"If you want to go to the movies or something later that's cool Yurina. Just lemme know."

    But just a bit.

Those sorts of reactions were too cute to just pass up.

Ignoring Aika now, who was looking at Shun with her head tilted questioningly to the side, Mark adjusts his body a bit unconsciously, his eyes catching the eye of the girl standing in the doorway. Judging by the conversation that had just been going on, her positioning at the door, his inability to recognize her, as well as her sudden intense desire to clean her glasses upon being noticed...

He came to the conclusion that this was the new girl.

He could sympathize, in more than one way.

A foreigner in this sort of school himself, he could vividly remember his own first day, the stares, the suspicions, the apprehension, the awkward transitioning...

It was never any fun, so...

"Hey!" Calling out, as friendly as always, the golden haired youth decides to throw her a rope without really considering the future, just knowing that he should probably say something before Aika has a chance to make it super awkward for her, "You the new girl? You can sit with us if you want, no need to be shy."

    But...

    Just as his sister said.

He was, perhaps, a bit too sincere with his kindness.

Some saw it as a Saint simply gathering more followers, but, really...

He never even really thought in those terms.

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stilled and the actors leave the stage, the story will never truly end.

Regardless of the form it takes, as long as there are memories of it's existence, the story will continue on.

    Please, remember it warmly.

    “Oh.”

She grabs me by the arm and drags us out the door. A part of me wonders if this should wait until later, consider class beginning in an hour, and I’m sure I must’ve mumbled something, too, though who knows if anyone can hear it.

I look to the others as she drags me out of the room, though I’m not really expecting much. Though really, I should probably just brace myself for having my mind flooded with Ryoutanah, it’s already happening, isn’t it?— for the next several hours or so, if this is how it’s all going to end.

Or maybe she'll remember by the time class starts.

Absently, I wave to the others and mumble out a “bye”.
