Not that this is for serious character opinions, but I think that Kariya's back story is sympathetic... to a point. But then, as most Matous, he goes from abused to abusive/delusional/etc.
Imagine that the world is made out of love. Now imagine that it isn’t.
Imagine a story where everything goes wrong, where everyone has their back against the wall, where everyone is in pain and acting selfishly because if they don’t, they’ll die.
Imagine a story, not of good against evil, but of need against need against need, where everyone is at cross-purposes and everyone is to blame.

Spoiler:
the only truly sympathetic matou is shinji's dad

He decided to sent Shinji overseas during the Grail War so he's actually one of the best parents of the Nasuverse
Ignoring, you know, the whole Sakura thing
(Honest question, how involved was he with that?)
He did what Zouken told him to.
Oversaw the experiments she was going through and just assisting Zouken with whatever he asked for. While coasting on the family money.
Basically, he was being a bystander bitch for Zouken and drinking himself into alcoholism out of depression, no rape if that was what you were thinking.
So other than willingly condoning the abuse and becoming a drunk, I don't think he did anything himself.
I mean, you could also tack on letting the mother of his child become worm fertilizer, but that would be obvious.
Speaking of which, do we have any info on what happened to Byakuya and Kariya's actual parents?
All I know is that iirc, Sakura said their mother planted a cheery blossom tree in the yard that was dying for the longest time (interesting symbolism there Nasu).

Hate to beat a dead horse, but I just came across some stuff from mats that seems relevant on Kariya's putative heroism...

Brave Sir Kariya ran away
He bravely ran away
When Zouken reared his ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Kariya turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Swiftly taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, Sir Kariya!

Good job Matt
The last one isn't even Kariya's own entry. It's Zouken's, so if it was written from anybody's perspective (other then the author's, obviously) it should be his.

Okay, I have to admit... that's actually pretty damn funny.
I stuffed Kariya inside a locker and stole his lunch money
