A lot of regiments in the US Army during WWII wanted to have Native Americans or those of Native American decent in their platoons. Because the Native Americans were fighting to protect their lands and their freedom it set a better example and raised the moral of the non Native Americans in the regiment.

Also interesting fact: The Shawnee were masters at psychological warfare. One hilarious example of this was that they would tame owls to fly against the Cherokee, the tribe they constantly warred against because the Cherokee were terrified of owls. They considered them a death omen while to the Shawnee they were sacred. They believe hawk or an eagle takes one's soul to the next world when someone dies during the day, while an Owl does so at night.
When the white man was getting violent and oppressive, the Shawnee found out about the witch trials and the crucifixion. Meaning they burned and crucified some of their enemies as a warning of, "Don't fuck with us."
