Why are there mechs who exclusively use magic in Knight and Magic? Isn't the point of giant robots to fight other giant things that you can't normally deal with, not use magic which everyone already can do? Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to instead have a small group of wizards on foot cover your magic artillery needs?

The Knights have much bigger magic engines, so they can pour much more magic power into their magic attacks. Think of it as the difference between the gun a infantryman carries and the gun mounted on a main battle tank.
It was all explained in one of the dozen or so chapters that they completely skipped without mention (still bitter).
