Which I find a bit weird for a guy from the approximate place and era he's from, I remember reading a period piece (well, I call it a period piece, but it was a sort of "imaginary characters in an imaginary place that existed in a real world setting", and the author did a lot of research on the time period- Tales of the Otori, if you're interested, ninja and samurai and murder all around). Maybe I'm just generalising, but the tone I got from the piece was that it was expected behaviour around that time period.
