You decide on arranging a meeting with Esabelle. Not only does she seem like a nice young lady, but you are also somewhat uncertain of the other two, especially Emilia’s shady background.

With your confirmation, your friend once again takes his leave in order to arrange the meeting.

In the meantime, you decide to do some research yourself. Although you have heard of the Kaplans before, you still don’t know too much about them. Some information might help you get to better know Esabelle before you meet.

After a day of talking to a few people around the Mage’s Association, you have gathered a more solid picture of the Kaplan Family. Apparently, Esabelle has seven other suitors, with you now being the eighth. Her elder sister had five suitors and ended up marrying the most prestigious one. Esabelle herself does not have any thaumaturgical training as is tradition for a magus family. It seems that her role in the family is simply to be married off.

Since she doesn’t have any thaumaturgical knowledge, her presence around Clock Tower is minimal, so little is known about her personal life and interests. Most of her social activity is centered around parties held at her family’s estate. She gives off the impression of a sheltered high-class lady.

The next day, Mizuki Kotegawa drops by your place to discuss her new project. At about the same time, your friend also arrives and informs you that the arrangements have been made. You will be having a meeting Esabelle Kaplan to discuss the possibility of marriage at a high-end restaurant in five days. The family head, her father, has insisted that he will be accompanying his daughter for at least part of the meeting.

Overhearing your intentions to marry the young lady, Mizuki frowns but gives you her blessings anyways. She warns you to not let your love life interfere with your work and storms off. Your friend follows shortly and you are left to prepare for the upcoming meeting in five days.

You understand that if you are to successfully marry Esabelle, you’ll have to come out on top of her many other suitors. First impressions are important and this upcoming meeting will likely be vital to your success.

Agreed, we're distinctly 'average' as a magus so assassination attempts will probably backfire horrifically. Rumours about a wallflower aren't going to be helpful in the slightest and trying to win people over could get hairy. Best to just do our own thing for now. Also,

You decide that there’s no use worrying too much about the meeting. You should just be yourself without any need for pretense. Until the day of, you’ll just go about your life as normal.

And so the days pass in the blink of an eye. Before you know it, you wake up on the morning of the day of the meeting. It seems that you had locked yourself in your lab for three days and then collapsed and slept for the entirety of the fourth day. Well, you got some good work done so it’s fine. The new spell you were working on finally worked, so you should be able to publish your paper soon.

After some time composing yourself, you get out your best suit and head for the meeting. You arrive at the high-end restaurant 10 minutes early, but it seems that your company was even earlier. You are lead to a private room where the Kaplan father and daughter are waiting.

“Hello, Mr. Joestar.”

Upon entering the room, you are immediately greeted by a blond, middle-aged bespectacled man. To his right is the young girl whose face you’re already familiar with. Even as someone with a heart of ice, you have to admit that she looks beautiful, even more so in person. You note that while her father greets you, she simply nods in your direction.

You return the greeting and he motions you to sit down. Once you’re comfortably seated, the man removes his glasses and stares you straight on.

“Now then, let’s talk.”

You immediately begin to discuss the matter of you and Esabelle’s hypothetical marriage. Most of the conversation is Mr. Kaplan leading the topics and asking you questions about your lineage, research, family, and so on. He is especially keen on your intentions on marrying his daughter and your financial standing. You reply honestly and frankly, at some points possibly coming off as rude. You in return ask a few basic questions about the Kaplans and Esabelle but the answers are more or less what you’d presumed and what you already knew.

You notice that Esabelle is remarkably quiet all throughout the conversation. You estimate she must have not spoken more than 5 full sentences, and each time she glanced at her father before speaking. She’s about as quiet as her father is overbearing. For the most part, she simply sits still and smiles.

After about an hour of this back and forth, Mr. Kaplan begins to quiet down. Abruptly, he make a big smile at you and gets up.

“Well, I think I’ve overstayed my due. I should leave you two young ones alone now.”

In a sudden change of atmosphere, he shakes your hand and makes his exit.

“It was a pleasure meeting Mr. Joestar. I trust you’ll escort my daughter back home. Have a good evening.”

And just like that, he was gone like a storm.

Suddenly, you are left alone in the room with Esabelle. In a change of pace, she seems visibly flustered now that her father had left, in comparison to her stoic smile earlier. With the driving force of the conversation gone, an awkward silence begins to set in. She’s about as quiet as ever and you’re not much of a talker to begin with.

Just as you try to think of something to talk about, she addresses you first, looking you in the eye, slightly red in both cheeks.

“W-well, I guess we have the rest of the evening to ourselves. What should we talk about?”
