Neglected and (Unduly) Hated Anime Characters

A thread dedicated to the appreciation of game and anime characters who get altogether too much shit from the fans.

Bear in mind that this thread is meant only for the appreciation of characters who you've seen getting more flak or apathy than is appropriate. I have no intention of sparking any debate here. If you have a grievance with a certain character, we all probably know why you hate them already, so no need to voice those opinions.

There's this obscure anime character called Emiya Shirou from the show called Fate/stay. Everyone thinks he's a weakling who can only cook but he's my favorite anime character because he is so cool. I don't know if any of you guys know him but he's very cool.

Characters like Orihime from Bleach and Shirley from Code Geass. From what I can tell, they're hated by the fandom just for being love interests to the main character and having "weak", "girly" personalities (which often equates to being very emotionally strong but just not a physical powerhouse). Really though, I hardly ever muster genuine hatred for anime characters, unless they're villains.

I'm seconding Rafflesiac's nomination for Shinji: people seem to conveniently forget his backstory and everything that goes on in the series, and easily blame him and sometimes only him, for all the bad things that happen in the story. The complaints about his attitude pretty much come down to the same reasons, failing to understand why the creators made him that way, and why it works for him to be like that in the story itself.

Yuno Gasai.

In my experience, people, especially fanfic writers will spit blood over how much they hate Yuno. And more often than not, it's only because they're "Die-For-My-Shipers" who seem to think that Yukiteru only liked Yuno for one single reason, often pegging him into the role of a person suffering from Stockholm Syndrome, which is a very shallow interpretation considering the myriad of other factors. Ultimately though they're just making whatever excuse they can think of to reunite poor helpless Yuki with his real true love, who is of course Akise.

I've come to grips with the fact that there is no escape from people who want romantic rival characters to die/shower them with hate/depict them as worse than they really are (in Yuno's case, this gets ridiculous considering she's already really messed up before being exaggerated and made into a caricature. But what actually bugs me about all of it is that they don't care which Yuno it is. They hate the Yuno from the

third world with the same degree of contempt as they did the psychopathic Yuno from the first world, sometimes even more, solely for the crime of not also being dead, since, you know, she never actually killed anyone, (although she willingly took her former incarnations when offered).

That Yuno was just a normal girl. Besides, I didn't see Akise free Yukiteru from 10,000 years of loneliness and misery. That was all Yuno.

I couldn't get past the way her character was introduced. That scene was fucking horrifying. I will admit that she gets used for some excellent gags.

I couldn't get past the way her character was introduced. That scene was fucking horrifying. I will admit that she gets used for some excellent gags.

I feel Esdeath was fine as a villain, but trying to turn her into some kawaii love interest for Tatsumi was pretty dumb. Her evil actions are way too extreme for her to be even slightly redeemed unless she completely remade her entire personality, which she shows no signs of doing. But arguing over a character in a thread that specifically says it's not meant for debate is pretty silly, so there's probably no sense continuing this conversation.
