I do wonder about that. I mean, mecha anime was around long before computer animation and they managed fine. It could be that production budget got cheaper as time went on, or the skill of the animators decreased as the industry had a turnover, but it feels like its more of a time saving measure than anything. The thing that rubs me the wrong way is that these things are the centerpiece of the show, you should put the most effort into them.

And that's probably why the CG AS's look so great when compared to the other mech shows out there, barring Sunrise.

But the reliance on CG to save time also leads to stuff like Episode 2's car chase.

In essence it's a lot like the problems older things had when there was one still background layer and foreground layers for things that moved would stand out--like those infamous "that ground is drawn differently its obviously going to crumble soon" images--since the postprocessing is so different it just doesn't mesh well unless you have a lot of time and resources to make it look better.

But saying mecha was around long before computers and they did it fine is kinda wrong since some 1980s hand-drawn show exists in a completely different paradigm and couldn't even do the kind of shots they do now. Then we'd just be complaining about how the car chase was two still images of cars moved up against each other with a blurred still background that was made to suggest speed.

True, and that still hasn't gone away either. Look at almost any shounen or sports show and you can see the speed lines over a mostly still frame. I guess by this point it's so entrenched so we don't notice (or complain about) it as much.

The Franxx commentary was pretty interesting; it's cute how Goro's VA went through the tsundere "there's no way mc-kun is that good of a person" phase with Goro before attaining enlightenment.
