Freaking Romulus wields what amounts to a tree, so why can't Herc get a pillar?

No Berserker Herk can do it as well(looks at Grand Order....) how it is never said but what was made apparent that in FGO Herk isn't fully under ME or at least it seems he can still possess some reason. Which admitibly if looking in the UBW anime he did as well when he was first summoned. So yeah it's vague on that.

As for the Lancer bit, while I don't remember him using any lances in his myths so I don't know. Maybe it's just because of Nine Lives, same as Saber

The mats say that the class Herk would be able to fully maximize Nine Lives was when he is in Saber from what I remember.

When you say he showed basic reasoning capacity in the UBW anime, are you talking about when he saved Ilya from the wolves or his first fight with Saber? I thought the latter was due to Eye of the Mind (False).

Its the fact that he has enough self-awareness to limit his own mana expenditure so that he wouldn't harm Illya, so much so that he deactivated God Hand to not put that much of a strain on her. Do you really think those wolves could produce A rank attacks from just biting? He turned off God Hand since that would have hurt Illya.

No, Archer is Herk's best class since he gets most of his stuff there plus God Hand and Nine Lives(Alcides is that x10 but minus God Hand) but even though his best class is Archer, the best class for Nine Lives is Saber, that's where he can take the technique to its upper limit.

It's arguable if the sword techniques referred to here is only Nine Lives or he's got other stuff

Of course, Heracles, who is stout of heart, body, and mind on top of being skilled with all sorts of weapons, is more than qualified for the Saber class as well.
If he had been summoned as a Saber, he would have been able to demonstrate his splendid sword techniques to his heart's content.
