It's not so much that he intentionally makes a vegetarian steak so much as the king orders a steak, gears turn in Gawain's head as he does his best to process the order, and in the end he plops down yet another plate of boiled potatoes with a beaming smile on his face announcing to the world that he's 100% sure he nailed it.
