Only if you want to go to Gyms. If you just want to catch Pokemon, they'll spawn in your bathroom.
I wonder if, like the portals in Ingress, people will start building booby traps and fences around Gyms for this.

I captured a Charmander in bathub, Caterpie in my front door, Nidoran and Weedle in my room, and a Pinsir in my terrace.
I beat the game, I captured many Pokemon without going outside.
