That's basically what the LNs adapted from web novels are.
That includes even the genuinely good ones though. For instance, Re:Zero was originally a web novel.

Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei. Interpersonal relationships aside, it actually had a LOT of depth in its magic system and how it relied on advanced science and field manipulation. It's just that sometimes it's better to just let a fire spell be a fire spell.

TM still has the best magic system I've ever come across.
Though abandoned, forgotten, and scorned as out-of-date dolls, they continue to carry out their mission, unchanged from the time they were designed.
Machines do not lose their worth when a newer model appears.
Their worth (life) ends when humans can no longer bear that purity.
It was also insanely nationalist and its MC was a Gary Stu of the highest order.

It’s funny because I started reading this Isekai called “The Magic In This Other World Is Too Backwards” and except for magic circuits the guy just basically ripped his whole “modern magic” setting that the main character comes from from the Nasuverse lol

It’s not a perfect 1:1 match obviously but the resemblance is uncanny
I wonder how many series do this in whole or in part. It surprised me hearing offhand that Youjo Senki uses the magic circuit system in the LN.
And Japanese isekai was better when it was wish fulfillment for little girls in the 90s (Escaflowne, Rayearth, Fushigi Yuugi, Twelve Kingdoms, the later CLAMPverse fuckfest). They had robots. And real characters.
Well what stands out to you, that seperates Nasuverse-style urban fantasy from other urban fantasy settings?
Oh yeah I remember that one, I only read a few of the beginning chapters but yeah that guys previous life just screams Nasu mage.

Just the way it infodumps about different magic systems being like programs engraved in the world to reproduce natural phenomenon and elements being something extra that gives meaning to spells but different elements being able to reproduce the same effects even though they start from different places. And the Church being a secret branch of the Catholic Church devoted to stamping out heresies like magic, and the goal of magi to be reaching the Akashi Records to become omnipotent. And the MC practices Kabbalah like Roa and Aoko.
Okay I can see he certainly took a lot from Nasu. There are certainly worse settings to crib off lf I say.
Is the story actually okay for an isekai?
How does LOTR separates itself from other high fantasy settings?
