Thread: How did YOU get into Type-Moon?

  1. #981
I started TYPE-MOON with the KnK LNs many years ago. Those hooked me, and I began to branch out within the series, and now I've read/played almost every TYPE-MOON work. I tend to prefer the non-Fate stuff, but Fate can be pretty fun too.

I was forced to play Tsukihime in high school with no idea what it was.

I saw Deen Stay Night as a kid. I had no idea what the fuck I was watching and who the fuck all the characters were.

Half a decade later I saw Gigguks Fate/Zero review and then realized "Oh yeah that series existed"

My friend would not shut the hell up about the FSN VN back in highschool, so I eventually played it just so he would.
He didn't, because I joined the chorus.

I saw the first anime that came out in 2006 and then moved straight onto the VNs from there. Then I read Tsukihime and just continued to consume all the TypeMoon stuff I could find translated as it was released. I really became hooked with the EXTRA series though, CCC being my favorite.

I had never even heard of the Nasuverse (Aside from the occasional mention of Tsuki here and there) until I saw these 2 podcasts which made me play the FSN VN. That's how I discovered the franchise.

I can't believe most people here came and stayed for Fate. Was I really one of the few who came in for Fate and stuck around for Tsukihime? Especially now.

I mean, Tsukihime is definitely my favorite story, but how exactly do you stay for something that's not getting updated.

You stay for the vaporware remake. Seriously, is Tetsuya Nomura in charge of that one?

*Chuckles* That's entirely possible, given the length of time between Kingdom Hearts games as an example - but you think he'd have put us through two or three remakes across as many different platforms by now, if that was the case.

And personally, my introduction to TYPE-MOON was through one of the most unpopular routes. I was at a convention, and picked up a "demo disc" of trailers for anime the company was putting out. Among them was this:

. . . I've been tied to the world ever since - and while I understand why people don't like the anime, as an adaptation, at least, it remains a sentimental favourite for me.

Demo spoke very well of KnK in his top anime movies.

A few years later he blew 400$? on King Hassan and didn't get him. On EN. Without having actually finished reading FSN past the point where Saber starts to sufellatio.
Then he got drunk and went into Hakumen trials but got walled trying to do Zantatetsu on pad. Then he got more drunk and played DMC3 up until the halfway point and all was well.

I can't remember exactly when I discovered TYPE-MOON, my memory is just terrible. I think it was when I saw, by chance, a project to translate Tsukihime into my native language which makes me think that happened when I still didn't know English very well. I can't remember how things went from there but before I knew it I was reading about the Nasuverse in tvtropes and the tm wiki (at the time I didn't care for spoilers, kinda regret it a bit now), having a thing for works that aren't part of the same series but take place in the same world (let's say worldbuilding in general) I became quite interested in it. After some time I actually read FSN (by that time I could read English, although after re-reading it last year and understanding a lot more things I didn't understand or realize when I read for the first time it makes me wonder how if my reading capacity in English was really good back then) and entered this world for real. I'm not sure when all this happened but I am quite sure the UBW anime had yet to start when I finished FSN.

Higurashi and Umineko introduced me to the concept of "visual novels". And, since they were both so good, I decided to search for more works in the same medium, since I'd had an excellent first impression. I was thrilled, feeling like a kid who had just discovered a new toy; after all, I've always been an avid reader, and finding a WHOLE NEW WAY of consuming books was nothing short of exhilarating.

I was not prepared for how much of the medium was smut. Hell, many of the classics I kept reading about were filled with what I could only describe as "porn aimed at virgin weebs". I mean, nothing against erotic works, but the fact that there was SO MUCH of it gave me pause.

I was just about ready to give up, but a friend of mine - made in the Umineko fandom, no less - urged me to press on. I started with a "clean" work that was considered a classic: Ever17. Some wonky translations aside ("naturally, I knows the hacker"), it was captivating, so maybe Higurashi and Umineko were not exceptions. Maybe I should give those smutty works over there a chance, too?

My first choice? Fate/Stay Night. The rest is history.

...though I feel I should point out that I started with no knowledge whatsoever of what was waiting for me. I originally expected the thing to be brimming with sex; in fact, after the prologue was over, I was surprised that Rin and Archer had not had sex yet. And then it went on, and on, and on... by the time the first sex scene finally came up, I had all but forgotten that the thing was supposed to be an eroge.

Smut is good. It is an important part of the stability of any civilization... and almost everyone starts consuming smut before they are of age, anyway. Tis' the circle of life.

Now, a medium that is mostly smut is certainly weird, you have to admit. Especially smut aimed at virgin weebs - honestly, that shit tends to be embarrassing, Kinoko-Nasu's-sex-scenes levels of embarrassing. You can't really blame me for thinking all those novels were more or less on the same level as Twilight, when it comes to writing quality.

Fortunately, I saw the error of my ways. I can still count the amount of non-embarrassing sex scenes I've read in VNs in the fingers of my hands, however. For a medium with so much smut, it is surprising how bad its creators are at writing porn.

What kind of porn you get in a VN highly varies depending on what genre you are reading but ultimately its anime porn and anime porn is anime porn.

There's a lot of good anime porn. Another Lady Innocent and Boin (as well as its sequel, Resort Boin) are quite good, for instance. Never seen anything quite that good in a VN. Even if it fits my general tastes, the writing never gets better than merely "passable".
