The Beast's Lair Secret Santa Contest! (2018)

I actually can't believe it's been three years now.

This is a thread for a Secret Santa contest, a sort of fic exchange, in which members may anonymously submit ideas or premises, and later receive another's premise in turn to write in exchange. Rather than be scored by a set of judges, instead, all the fics will be posted and the community gets to vote for which of their fics were their favorite. Most of the details remain the same as last time, except this will use pools like the previous two contests.

Yes, this is copy-pasted from last time, as will the rest of the OP. Same deal as usual.

For the Santa exchange, there will be no theme, and any genre may be submitted.

    A General Summary:

    1. Participants will submit their prompts, three per participant. PM them to me.
    2. Once the deadline's up, participants are then given another user’s prompts to write for. Of the three, you may choose one to write in exchange. You can write more than one, but the idea here is to give more freedom of choice to the receiver, in the case where if they don’t like one prompt, they won’t be stuck with that
    3. Up until the writing deadline is up, participants send their fics to me. Once the deadline's up, all the fics will be posted anonymously into one megathread.
    4. The community (so, not only limited to participants, even non-fic writers may participate) may then vote on their most favorite fics out of all the submissions, rather than use formal judging. At the end, points are tallied and a winner is declared.

    Rules and Guidelines:

    • Participants that submit ideas must write an idea in turn. This can't quite be enforced, but don't try to mooch a free fic off this contest and not even bother try write anything in turn. If you find yourself unable to finish in time, a half-done fic is better than no fic at all. If you have previously entered an exchange contest and have not turned anything in on your end, you cannot enter until you do.
    • On a less harsh note, don't be pressured to make your fics like 20k word epics. Shorter drabbles, like only 1-2k words, will be just fine.
    • Similarly, try keep your submitted fic pitches flexible. Please don't try request super long fics, or prompts so specific you pretty much wrote the fic yourself already, and try to keep one-shot or drabble ideas in mind. We don't have much time to write, so please be considerate of others.
    • TYPE-MOON fics/premises only. Don't request crossovers, even if one side is TYPE-MOON. This is mostly for fairness, so that people won't find themselves writing, say, a Blazblue crossover when they can't be expected to have any Blazblue knowledge.
    • Not a rule, but it may help to note what parts of the Nasuverse one is familiar with, and what works they've consumed enough to be comfortable writing. It'd be bad for everyone if people got pitches that they know nothing about. Similarly, if there are prompts that people don't feel comfortable writing, you can request to avoid them.

Pitched ideas will be displayed publicly here, so you have time to think before pitches are distributed.
    Submitted Prompts

    Pool 1
    • The King of Magic was defeated, and human history was preserved. But what of the years that were lost, and the people who lost those years? Write a story from the perspective of someone unrelated to Chaldea dealing with the fallout of Observer on Timeless Temple’s events.
    • It’s girls’ night out in Chaldea, and a few ladies are out to have a fun time. Write a nighttime excursion for some of the female Servants of Chaldea. Men are BANNED, and yes, this does include Astolfo. You can add porn, but you’re probably better off without it. A few example groups are Medb/Tomoe, Atalanta/Circe/Drake, or Tamamo/Shuten-douji, but feel free to come up with your own.
    • After a mission gone wrong, Ciel gets reassigned to a podunk town in the middle of South America to exterminate glorified mosquitoes, but soon finds she's gotten into more than she's bargained for... (A semi-comedic work, in the vein of Hot Fuzz. The nature of the complication in Ciel's otherwise insultingly simple mission is up to you.)

    Pool 2
    • Exasperated with her antics, the Ryougi family sends Mana to a Bridal Training School run by an almost-blind former classmate of Azaka's. Is there an ulterior motive?
    • After earning enough money, Shirou gives his blessing for Rider to buy a new bike to replace #2. Trouble is, as a fellow Servant with "riding," Saber wants to tag along too.
    • Nanako is homesick. It's time to run away from Ciel again and rope Arihiko into helping her get back home the only way she knows how. By defeating the True Ancestor!

    Pool 3
    • [Fate/stay night] Atrum Galliasta vs. The Bearded Middle-Aged Magus--a divergence point of a "competition" to determine who's to be the ill-fated Master of Caster in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Be as liberal as you like with the concept and execution of "competition between two magi," as direct or as indirect as you see fit for the narrative. Regarding the BMAM, you are free to make him be whoever you want, and characterized however you like, as long as it's within reason that the character could be Caster's would be F/SN Master.
    • [Fate/Grand Order] A story about TEAM PHOENIX. Gordolf Musik, Muniere, and Four, on motorcycles, taking place in a singularity involving a cafe in the middle of desert region that has two suns and is populated by dinosaurian reptiles and possibly other phantasmal creatures. In other words: https://imgur.com/8KsPIaD
    • [Tsukihime/Fate/the basic T-M setting] A magus/family of magi/group of magi being hunted by the Church. The eternal rivalry; a conflict of survival. Characters, outcome, and time period are up to you. Bonus points if you include Hansa Cervantes and his consecrated chainsaw leg.

    Pool 4
    • Francesca Prelati has experienced many deaths, but some of them were especially memorable: the old man of the Jewels, a particularly eccentric Count, the immortal witch of spring, an enterprising Apostle, the last tongue of Babel, the three queens who bore a certain king to his resting place, and an infamous master puppeteer come to mind. Tell the tale of at least one such encounter, and feel free to interpret and expand on Francesca's mysterious nature and abilities however you like.
    • Aozaki Aoko does not make a habit of worrying about things. If it was up to her she would ignore her duty as a Magician for as long as she can. Yet as she stands against the bloodlust-driven rampage of the White Princess she can't help but wonder if putting down genocidal vampires is part of that duty or just an occupational hazard. "Dogs of this cursed order, don't even wait for the Sixth, I'll exterminate you all with my bare hands!"
    • Narbareck. A name that could just as well be a title. Is it by some means inherited, passed down from parent to child, pried from the cold dead hands of its previous owner, or transmigrated to suitable vessels by divine providence? Is its holder an individual, amalgamated from the memories of a thousand years, or perhaps not even human at all but a weapon of God? Explore the possibilities in a piece that delves into the matter of the leader(s) of the Burial Agency.

    Pool 5
    • A scene from the lost Singularity Jerusalem - Camelot/Zero. The arrival of the False Crusaders or Lion King, purging of the Round Table, the Martyrdom of Gareth, or your preference. The sacrifices that gave meaning to the later Singularity.
    • Reinterpret a Fate work as another Fate author would have written it. You are encouraged to stay away from memes or lazy criticism - moreover, avoid completely changing the premise to the best of your ability. Consider what the same characters do differently when working toward a different authorial purpose.
    • Write the second scene in day 9 from the third route of Tsukihime II.

    Pool 6
    • Grail wars are by now a hardy annual. An underexamined element of theirs is the use of summoning catalysts - artefacts historically linked to a desired Servant. A fair number of these are known: the snakeskin for Gilgamesh, Avalon for Saber, a fragment of cape for Iskandar, Herakles' axe-sword, and so on. In other cases Servants have been summoned with catalysts left unspecified by the writer. Either way, it is rare for us to learn precisely how a given catalyst found its way into the hands of a Master. Write a story which explores any aspect of the provenance of a catalyst of your choice. Was it bought from a collector? Stolen from an ancient tomb? Excavated at great expense? How? When? Where? Who was involved? And why?
    • "O Fortuna, velut luna statu variabilis!" The element of chance in human life is a source of endless fascination to mortals as it is alike to those substantially less mortal. All worldly success and utter ruin can be separated by as little as single roll of the dice. Use the premise of a high-stakes game at Van-Fem's casino to explore this. Tsukihime only. (Fate is the antithesis of chance.)
    • Describe any event [or events] of any chapter [or chapters] of Kara no Kyoukai from the perspective of a bystander with no knowledge of the supernatural. Do not name the bystander. Any format. Diary entry, recorded interview, police statement? Be creative.

    Pool 7
    • [KnK] A detective noir story starring (though not restricted to) Shiki, Touko or Mikiya, preferably (but not necessarily) with a supernatural element.
    • [Fate/GO] A Golden Age of Detective Fiction-style story starring Sherlock Holmes. Basically, a Sherlock Holmes fanfic with the supernatural elements from the Nasuverse (not necessarily GO only - feel free to include things from other works, too!).
    • [Tsukihime] A story set after the Good Ending of Arcueid's route exploring how Arcueid is essentially immortal, while Shiki is even less long-lived than most people.

    Pool 8
    • In a stroke of common sense, the Einzberns opt not to summon Heracles as a mad dog. A very sane Herc enters the Fifth Holy Grail War. What changes?
    • Enforcer Cornelius Alba winds up working the same case as freelancer Kiritsugu Emiya. Alba doesn't remember the kid whose village he burned to the ground, but the kid certainly remembers him.
    • With the seventh member of the Burial Agency mysteriously missing in action, the Church reinstates Kirei Kotomine as an Executor and sends him to Mifune City to investigate rumors of vampiric activity. What begins as a simple seek and destroy mission becomes infinitely more complicated (and satisfying) when he meets an incarnation of the Earth herself. Perhaps something above and beyond humanity will be able to answer his gnawing questions about human nature.

    Pool 9
    • During the age of exploration, a magus is accused/designated for sealing/ousted from his homeland and takes a boat to america, where he/she seeks to establish him/herself. But the problem is, Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are the connections, territories and workshops often associated with his type. For one of talents so unnatural, finding a community to settle and work in may not be so easy. Document the work of a magus in the new world, and their interactions with the natives, settlers and lawmen in volatile times.
    • Ayako Mitsuzuri is having a great time in university, but her friends have recently gotten obsessed with street racing, and drifting. After a week of them attempting to drag her along for a meet, she finally relents. The event fascinates her, but moreso was the one man who was getting kicked away from the meetup after apparently betting away his car, but insisting his opponent has cheated, a man of familiar hair and skeeviness, Shinji Matou. Shinji notices Ayako, and meets up with her after the meet, where he insists that he was cheated and begs her to race for him. Ayako is reluctant, but Shinji assures her he knows how he was cheated, and knows how to prevent it. The only question is, what's all this eurobeat going to be for?! Ayako racing vs magus dude. Must involve sound-based magecraft that can only be countered by blasting eurobeat so loud Ayako can't hear their sound.
    • A man goes to his friendly neighborhood Gazebo to compete in some Melty blood, but to his terror, as soon as his first match starts, he dies of circumstances to your choosing. This is not the end however, as they wake up in the game, as their character, and they assume only way out is to finish the story/arcade mode, and beat the boss at the end. The only problem with this is that the AI is acting incredibly human, top player-like in fact, and he can't even beat the first arcade encounter! Looks like the way to reach the end, to make grand finals, is to get good! Melty Blood Isekai . Beat the arcade/story mode, Go home(?). Every time you game over, you have to restart the fight you're at. To win a match, you have to win two games out of three. Every game is 2 rounds to win. Round 1, Fight!

The prize, as usual will go to the author of the winning fic, and may be either an illustration of their fic, or of another fic of their choice. An addendum to this will be that prize illustrations may only be of a single scene, and up to three characters (any more at my discretion).

Pools are closed. Fics are to be submitted by 12/24, 11:59 PM EST.

I can't participate, but I've got to say Pool 3 is full of fantastic ideas. Any one of those would be a great ride.

    Edit: Pool 4, too

I kind of want to join, but at the same time, I can't guarantee I'll finish what I try to start, and I like to do that.

    - - - Updated - - -

Actually, I kind of want to do Locked in Chaldea’s Crunch Time Chamber except without the porn... just because of the possibilities that Osakabehime presents. My one other change to the scenario would be that it has to take place in Osakabehime's room, since there is no force in the universe that can tear her out of her NEET lair.

    - - - Updated - - -

Screw it, I've got a better idea that uses Osakabehime...

Huh. Pool 4's got it going on.
McJon01: We all know that the real reason Archer would lose to Rider is because the events of his own Holy Grail War left him with a particular weakness toward "older sister" types.

Three days left to enter. As usual, if we don't reach six entrants before the deadline, the contest will be put on hold and deadline extended until we have enough entrants.

As we have enough entrants to move forward, I'll start distributing prompts tomorrow. While the deadline is officially in like 3 hours, I'll put up anything in my inbox by the time I wake up tomorrow.

Let me know which pools you'd like or wouldn't like in the meantime.
