Those are not separate. It's like a progression.

You also forget how the reward for risking his life in a routine basis is being denied anything higher but the life of an average middle high student, meaning on top of all the training and fighting that should be a career on its own he's also got to deal with being just another student once his classmates magically forget they ever were thrilled about having him in the first place. And you've got to live in a small apartment with two other people, doing all chores for a drunk woman child and a constantly agressive roommate out to undermine your self-image at any given point. On top of the school and the giant piloting, you're also two other people's, and a penguin's, caretaker.

Seriously, when looked too closely Shinji's life is like a parody of itself.

Both Shinjis have terrible lives, but when you compare them to their peers (Mecha pilots/the other Eva kids for Ikari, Shirou, Sakura, and Tsukihime mains for Matou) their problems aren't nearly as dramatic seeming.

For Matou, it's: "Yeah your dad was a drunk, your Lich grandfather ignores you because you're a Muggle and you don't actually have parental figures in your life, but that girl you rape beat are kind of a dick to has all of that, plus her biological family traded her away, her biological dad's dead, her biological mom died brain-dead (because of your shared dead uncle who she got to watch die), her biological sister basically treats her like an acquaintance, she's crawling with flesh-eating worms, is carrying Rosemary's Baby and even if you aren't abusing her, your grandfather is."

For Ikari it's: "Yeah you're a child soldier who kind of hates their dad, has to pilot a giant robot with biofeedback, and are the only person in your weird, femdommish surrogate family with any domestic skills, but you don't have half the screaming horrorshow of a backstory most of the other characters do. The screaming comes later for you :V"

Other than Asuka, Rei and Misato, most of the EVA characters don't have half as much as crap thrown on them as Shinji does.

Gendo only lost the wife he claimed to love so much (which has never stopped him from boning other women, IIRC he even cucked Yui when Naoko when they both were still alive) because of a scheme to reach ultimate power they hatched in the first place. He is well respected as an influential leader, things tend to go his way until the very end, and overall is the character with the best position in the whole show, beating even SEELE since he comes closer to winning than they do.

Ritsuko's misery is all of her own making and ultimately comes down to Wah Wah This Dick of a Guy Uses Me But I Love Him Because Reasons. Nobody forced her to enter Gendo's toxic influence in the first place, much less after seeing how it screwed her mother up.

Kaworu... has to much on an alien perspective, and anyway mostly seems happy with how things go on even when he loses.

Mari... the fuck if anyone knows what's up with Mari, I'm thinking even Anno hasn't figured it out yet.

All the other characters seem to be comparatively well balanced enough to begin with, it's just they're stuck in Evangelion of all places.
