We're not even half way through it and I really liked how he's handling Flat & Jack and their motivations. I don't know if you could call it a "theme" but it pulled my heartstrings--which is much more than just "cool people" doing "cool things"
TBH I don't really think there needs to be any underlying themes to a grail war in itself though. Just really seeing the bonds between Master & Servant, and how they interact with others are enough. So I think Narita treating it with a strong character element is good.

I also have the unpopular opinion that I don't think the pacing in ufoUBW was that bad. Sure, it's lopsided, but it did a better job at keeping my attention than the VN did. I think that the "epic movie" feel they wanted to give it hindered some scenes (the Casternapping of Taiga, for example) and I think it does a lackluster job at conveying the route's thesis point. The message gets there, but a lot of the meat is lost. I don't disagree that the climax was better realized in the DEEN movie (it's been a long time since I saw that, but I vaguely recall it clicking with me more than in the TV series; I'd have to give both another watch to see if I agree or not, especially since I haven't seen ufoUBW with its BD scenes).
Fate/Grand Order seems pretty cool actually, it's just that I can't be arsed to play it.
don't quote me on this
I think GO's gameplay is fun. Simple doesn't have to mean bad.
Facing twelve lives Herc though.... Geh. Thanks god they don't put that in Okeanos

I need to read the VN and watch the DEEN movie in order to comment. Ufotable was my first exposure to the route, and I liked the pacing and climax just fine. That and Last Stardust playing with the climax of the route was unmatcheable, that is if you define the climax as Shirou v Archer. If you define it as Shirou v Gilgamesh, then I don't know.
Unpopular opinion: Lostbelt OP is better than fgo part 1 OP, both in song and the animation

I at least wasn't a fan of GO's first OP.
Can’t wait for the Gyakkou remixes at the end of part 2
I don't mind the fact that we will never be able to skip animation in GO
But at the very least give us the ability to do Quick Combat / Auto for repetitive farming stuffs
I don't play the game, I just try to keep up with the lore as best as I can.
I think it's something that should have been a series rather than a game, but it'd most likely wouldn't have been as successful and able to portray so many characters.
And it should have had more than a single Master with no personality (oh no, but wait! He displayed this actual personality trait THIS ONCE! And this other one THAT OTHER TIME, ten Singularities afterwards!). Had they had a group of less unlikable Crypters from the start as your team of Chaldea Masters out to save the world with their respective waifu and husbado teams, I'd have liked that, I think.
