That is actually super karmic, so I approve. Besides, Rin's words in the previous scenes to Shinji almost blatantly say as much. Whenever she talked to Shinji, she tried to actually tell him to stop and save him from his own stupidity.

Pretty sure Rin saved Shinji more for Sakura's sake than his. That said, if Rin knew the full extent of how he abused Sakura, I'm almost certain she would've let him die.

.Takeuchi: Shinji filled a role that is an absolute necessity in stories that take place in a school setting. Though his origin lies in that necessity, I think the unique flavourings we added to his character made him the guy everyone continues to love/hate to this day.
