Maybe that's what zouken's nice grandpa act is for.
other than just being cruel.

That's so stupidly, pointlessly evil that I can't help but laugh. Like I can imagine Nasu spinning his wheels on some stage of writer's burnout, probably after not having slept for a week, going "This scene still isn't tragic enough! Ok, rapeworms, rapeworms, what else can I put in to make Sakura even more pitiful? Ugh... fuck it, poison it is!"
I mean I could see it make sense in-universe if what Sakura cites as poison was Zouken using drugs to modify her body, but the way it's presented here just makes her sound like a soap opera heroine again.

Feeding a victim bullshit like "it's for your own good" or "this wouldn't happen if you just listened like a good girl" is like, abusive villain 101. It's, unfortunately, all too realistic.

remember, nasu sez: the bourgeoisie are incapable of being believably evil. either they are cartoonish caricatures or personally sympathetic in some way. proles, on the other hand, are scum whose lives have no moral relevance

Pretty rude of Zouken to do that to the housekeepers.

Lio, perhaps.
And yet counterpoint, Enjou.
shit BL says
Once and always and nevermore.
Lio is morally corrupted by being poor and Enjou needs to overcome being poor and unimportant and even then doesn't achieve any happiness beyond basking in the glory of the untouchable pure sacred mystical bourgeoisie that is Ryougi.
Being low class is a character stain.
On the other hand, being a hillbilly makes you practically a God.
don't quote me on this
It depends.
If you're meant to be a Servant, there must be something good about you no matter your origins, poor or rich. Like, even the aristocrat who murdered and raped dozens of children can still be a part of the team that saves human history and play the goofy wacky harmless magical uncle part here and there without Guda just flushing him down the toilet as soon as it's clear who he used to be.
If you're not meant to ever become a Servant, if you're a magus 96% chances are you're a scumbag but Muh Magi, Morality of Mortals don't Apply to Us (until karma kicks in, that is). Unless you're a visionary scumbag, in that case you'll be given a sob motivation thrown long after you're done kicking widows and threatening the protagonist with complete annihilation in the cruelest possible way, but that's okay because you only wanted to save humanity through utterly destroying it, and you really loved all of existence all the time you were twirling your moustache and kicking puppies while laughing.
If you're an ordinary muggle then 60% of chances are you're actually an okay person, although you'll always be a witless fool who will never realize the truth of what is happening around you and you'll buy any excuse that includes the words 'gas leak'. If you're a wealthy muggle... um, you know, that is a damn good question, how many Nasuverse rich people do we know who have no knowledge about magic whatsoever?

Taiga ('s family) is pretty loaded, being Yakuza and all. All the students at Reizei Academy. At least one of the Homurahara trio, if I remember right. There's not a lot of muggles involved in Nasu works in general, rich or poor.

Until Grand Order decides it wants Nefertari anyway.
More like magi kinda just suck. Trying to poison Sakura as a way of testing out the modifications of her body is part for the course when he's pretty much rearranging her very soul by playing with pieces of a grail vessel inside her for ten years.
I mean, Ilya was modified in the womb too, and her father allowed it to happen. Nobody ever talks about that. Plus that whole sending the naive homunculi into the forest full of horrid wraiths, spirits, and wolves n' shit.
I mean, you're trying to say one thing is too much from a society that kidnaps people to dice them up pretty much because they are butthurt that person got too far to the one truth before them.
@Dullahan: you say cartoonishly evil, but all that stops people from being that cruel is the means. What is believable? What you yourself experience, or reality?
Only if we're talking about sociopaths.all that stops people from being that cruel is the means.
Half decent people won't start harming others as soon as they have the means for it.
Most parents, for instance, could likely get away with abusing their children, but most parents actually love their children enough as to, at the very least, make some sacrifices for their sake instead of just sublimating everything to themselves.

You know, I think we've had this discussion at least 3 times in the last 2 months. We all know where we stand at this point.
