Hollow World ~ Owari no Kakera [IC]

Within the depths of the Spiral, one who is destined to emerge as the "heroine" of the Kyuubi Incident continues to fulfill her role as an Avatar of Hope.

A golden shine amongst waves of infinite darkness, that golden force is a flame born from the wills of deceased comrades and a sight that should one day brand her as the "Golden Witch," a hero who returned the awakening God of Destruction to it's tomb within the planet.

    Yes.

While she stands alone amongst endless flame and mud, there are so many 'voices' within her that she can barely hear the roar of the monster as it attacks; even so her body moves with strength it should not have to avoid the crashing limbs that topple buildings in their wake. While evacuations had started before the 'God' had reached landfall, there is no doubt in her mind that the casualties were staggering, and the girl that was famed for her resolute spirit and 'never give up' attitude is shaking inside as she fights something that cannot be defeated, kept standing only by the spirits of friends she had not had time to grieve.

There would be time later, they said.

    You must finish things now.

Even so, it is not that simple. The monster's presence corrodes her mind simply by existing at all, it poisons her with fear, draws out her doubts and insecurities, the weight that comes with knowing one bears the fate and regrets of so many people, and waits for her to choke on those curses and make a mistake. It is a sneering and sadistic God, a twisted form of "Humanity" that devours anything it comes across, that gives one the impression that they're looking in the mirror, and that the 'you' that you found there has come to drag you to the hell you know you deserve.

---Thankfully, it's attacks hold little more than power.

While nothing will survive being hit head on, the mass of souls is slow and chaotic; the attacks are telegraphed quite handily, and with so much 'will' backing her it is possible for her to avoid them. However, she cannot protect anyone else like this; attacks against it's body are useless, it feeds off of negativity, and it's rampage easily heals whatever wounds she could inflict now that she's alone and beginning to reach the limits of her strength, however...

"This isn't good... I gotta... Put an end to it soon...."

    There is one weak point.

    Just one.

The host, the Summoner, the one who was unfortunate enough to call it out of it's cage.

That person too, has a role.

    "Hakkero!"

When the destined opening appears, Liane Cross fires a shot made with all of her strength at that friend cloaked in darkness she could not cast off. It is a bullet of light that carries the feelings of all those that had died that day, an unrelenting force that is meant to 'awaken' their friend from her nightmare; there is no hope it will kill, rather, they hope to awaken the heart of the host, and believe in that heart's ability to throw off the darkness itself with a second chance.

As the role of Liane Cross is to fire that bullet, the role of that girl called "Kusumi" is to reawaken and end her own life. It is not the desired outcome for those involved, but the victim realizes her situation in a moment of lucidity and destroys herself, weakening the beast enough that it can then be forced to return to it's slumber.

In that way, the Kyuubi Incident comes to an extra bittersweet end; those children that had wanted to save the world end up doing so, losing much in the process, but creating a future for everyone to live in, however...

    "Hah...Hah..."

This time, the fading light does not reveal the face of a newly awakened friend at the heart of a screaming monster.

    No.

    Strangely, this time...

All she sees is the monster.

    "It... Didn't go through...?"

    ---This isn't right.

None of this is right. Perhaps it's because her soul remembers the 'road' that is normally followed, or perhaps it's because she simply understands something important was just lost, the girl that still had enough power to move away upon realizing her last resort strike has failed, pauses for a moment too long to shake off the "confusion" the God had been strong enough to instill in her.

---Something was missing, this shouldn't happen, something should have happened with that strike.

But something was missing, the 'possibility' that this fight could be won at all had already been denied hours ago.

For some reason her feelings had been unable to reach her friend, and as a result.

    She loses.

    ---But it's slow.

It's only a moment of confusion, but darkness swallows up her feet. To say it hurt would be a lie, but the mere touch of that mud is enough to cause her consciousness to flicker on and off from the sheer sensation of her feet simply ceasing to exist within its grasp.

    This mud eats humans.

It is humans, so of course it could absorb them. She had been touched by it a number of times already, but this is the first time it's gotten a solid grip, and with her power flickering from the aftermath of her last desperate strike, the unprepared soul is caught in a grip it should not able to break.

    Even so-

    "No-!"

    Fear, desperation, determination...

Driven by all three, she wrenches herself from the darkness to attack once more, because it can't end here, she can't let it end here.

    It can't win.

    "I won't let you-!"

If it does, that would mean she broke her promise.

She had swore to put an end to things, so-!

Answering her wish, both friends and weapon give birth to power they should not have; a hero is able to defy fate, while her consciousness has almost been ripped from her form, her desire to "keep her word" makes it possible for her to win anyway. Of course, there is a decision she has to make to do so; if she forgoes putting the last of her strength into saving herself from the mud, then she should be able to attack the beast one more time. It’s regeneration is absurd, but not so strong that it can completely shield its host a second time from the collective powers of thousands of souls.

    Still...

---Her body and soul screams to get away.

To be eaten by this thing is to suffer an impossible fate.

For humans it is hell, a real hell, not of fire and brimstone, but of curses and mud. Her top priority as someone with a survival instinct should be to get away from it, to get away from it regardless of what she has to do to accomplish it, yet-

She raises the gun once more anyway.

---It's not just her promise, too many people she cares about will die if gets past her, too many people have already died for her to allow herself to let it win.

If it wins, what was all of it for?

What was all that sacrifice for?!

Defying her own survival instincts, doing her best to rationalize it in spite of the screaming panic of something grasping at her soul, Aoyama's last hope-

-Is run right through from behind the moment before she pulls the trigger, an unexpected enemy wrapping up a 'loose end.'

Through the haze that had become her senses, it is impossible for her to even make out that face. The feeling of blood running down her body is a warmth that contrasts the sudden chill arising from within, and the enemy robs her of whatever power she has left before kicking her into the mud; arms shooting out to stop that fall halt it before beginning to melt away themselves.

She only catches a glimpse before everything begins to fall away.

It can't be ignored anymore, no matter how strong the will or wills, this mud will eat you alive eventually.

    It's silly to think otherwise.

Humanity always wins. Every time, without fail.

    It wins.

That's why this shouldn't be surprising, of course no one can defeat that monster.

    ---The shadow creeps up.

Light flares as a trigger is pulled once more, and a monster roars as a crashing defiance accompanies one's descent into madness.

Along with the moonlight, the Golden Witch is swallowed up by that pitch-black curse; the more of herself that disappears the harder she fights, it is a reality of those called “heroes” that they are harder to digest than most.

But no one fights forever, and her friends and family are here already.

Why so desperately try to escape? Everyone is here, so it is fine to fall into that pitch black embrace; even if you suffer forever at least you won’t be alone.

    Isn’t that right?

Deep inside, just like the others.

What exists is nothing more than the 'truth.'

    Eventually, they stop thinking.

    --Prologue//Departure--
    “A Time Before”

    ---It stood on the horizon.

A monster bathed in the light of a setting sun.

The figure of that which could only appear at the end of days.

    A mark of their failure.

Denial moves to protect the mind.

    It can’t be true.
They won’t allow it to be true.

    I can’t
    allow it to be true-!
Promises to keep, people to protect.
    Sacrifices to honor
    .
Every reason in the world to live
    ,
    But it doesn’t matter.

It’s meaningless if you don’t win?
What was it all for if you don’t win?
It was for nothing silly, you just couldn’t accept it.
But there’s no other choice now.

    Yes.
    That’s right.

    Admit it.
    Say it.
    Understand it.
It was all worthless, right from the start.

---By the time I realized it, I...

    Was already being eaten.

    Division Zero
    Artificial Island "Izanagi" - Morning
    18 hours before the tragedy

    Demon.

There had been an absurd amount of incidents involving them over the past couple of weeks, and as a result, the activities of Squad Zero were the most hectic they had been in six years. Different from youkai whose existences were at least 'natural,' those ascendant entities should not exist within the world at all, and even amongst the secret societies their existence was kept on a strictly need to know basis. Surpassing all limits of common sense, crystallizations of "concepts" that seemed to just gleefully tear apart reality at their own whims, it took something far stronger than your average exorcist to deal with one, and thus...

COMP Users were born; wielding artifacts descended from a "certain computer," the match-up seemed to be almost preordained by the heavens. COMPs reacted strangely to the presence of demon-kind, almost excitedly, like a tool that's eager to do the job it was created to do, yes... The ability to slay Gods certainly lay deep within the confines of those weapons, even if the secrets to drawing out their "full power" remained beyond the grasp of even the most talented of spiritual minds.

    Still...

While it is a line often quoted in meetings between those in the know, there is a certain sense of 'absurdity' that comes with being sent out specifically to exorcise an entity specifically calling itself Zeus. While it remained a "Hollow God," one that had lost much of it's power in this world that denied their existence, it was still the most intense battle the group had faced as a whole, but having faced it as a whole, well...

That was that, Squad Zero was not known for losing fights.

---Well, it wasn't that simple either. While a number of you had been able to immediately return home after the battle, half of the group had had to stay behind in accordance to procedure to ensure there was no "Recurrence Event." If the leylines and atmosphere remained clear of foreign entities over the course of the next 48 hours, they too would be able to return home to file that ever present paperwork over the incident.

The other half, all of you...

Were using up what little free time had been gained in this brief break between missions. New orders had come in shortly after landing back at base, so there was no real time to take a few days off. As those who fight things that are kept secret even from most other SDCD members, your lodgings and base of operations were slightly different as well, kept away from the public eye.

An artificial island, code-named "Izanagi." Bearing what amounted to am apartment complex, research lab, and an airstrip, it was the home afforded to you by your work. Not everyone present were members of Squad Zero, some existed as pilots, cooks and mechanics, but....

This time around, it seemed Captain Yuzuhira was helping out with flight preparations herself.

No one had seen her work on any machinery before, but lo and behold, the moment orders had come in she had flaunted the talent of a "Universal Genius" once more, more or less kidnapping Sachiko to help her, and...

    ----

    Faust
    Izanagi ~ Apartment Complex

It was a request from the Captain rather than an order, and a strange one at that.

"Could you go wake up the new recruit? Upper management doesn't like America showing us up, so we've been authorized -well, ordered really- to take her with us... I can leave her training to you, right? Just push the red button, she'll wake up."

Right after receiving the new orders to scramble, she had tossed that task into your lap without a second regard for it. Of course you don't mind, the mentor role is one you are somewhat used to performing, and the Captain wouldn't have made the request that you do it personally if she didn't have a reason for it, but...

A new recruit? Applicants are normally tested for weeks and evaluated by current members from afar, so it's a somewhat surprising occurrence for you as a senior member...

It seemed to have surprised the captain as well, so it's difficult to be directly offended about being left out of the loop; but something bothers you about the way the request was phrased, namely...

    Push the red button?

A little strange, to be sure. Perhaps some sort of new alarm?

Knowing the rooms of the others by heart, the existence of a new name "Evette," stands out as the only possible divergence.

The door is unlocked; there is no answer after knocking twice, and so you enter in order to fulfill the task you were entrusted with, but...

What's inside is not a human sleeping in a bed, rather, the figure of a girl is sitting silently amongst a bunch of foreign equipment.

    "..."

A number of things immediately draw your attention; the monitors behind the girl's chair are showing lines akin to that of a steady heart monitor, there are a number of wires sticking out the back of her arms and neck, with a glowing red button labeled "Activation" resting under her motionless palm, and...

In spite of the motions of the 'heart monitor,' there is no rise and fall of a chest that would indicate breathing...

---Panic doesn't truly set in, but...

What exactly had the Captain gotten you into with this?

    A button press later, and:

"Zero Division DNA confirmed. Preferred Administrator handle?"

A strange mechanical voice echoes out from the speakers, asking a rather bizarre question...

    Dirac
    Izanagi - Airstrip

While you had never managed to directly confirm it, but you were pretty sure Eishun had been assigned to "look after you" right from the start of your rather detestable employment here with these losers.

Naturally, he was probably the biggest loser of them all. Someone who seemingly wasn't able to understand subtleties, he was the candy obsessed guardian who also didn't seem smart enough (or serious enough perhaps) to truly care when you went off on one of your insult tangents, in other words...

    Insults just bounce off fools.

He was like a babbling mannequin that someone had left here to annoy you, and that simply didn't know how to shut up. Even now while you were waiting for the absurd captain to finish being her show-offy self in the garage with the ratchets, he was going on and on about the majesty of the ocean and how he was going to catch it's guardian as he sat near the edge with fishing pole in hand. To be frank you had moved over here in an attempt to be away from the others, and yet he had specifically chosen to follow you over here anyway, so...

    Yeah.

    One of those days.

    Again.

Fool hadn't even caught anything yet.

Of course he had also mostly just been talking 'around you' rather than at you, so it was easy to treat him kinda like the mannequin he was, until...

"Still, we only get about four hours of free time? You had breakfast yet? Won't get taller if you don't eat."

Holding the pole with one hand, he moves to pass you a box with the other.

    Chocolate donuts with candy sprinkles.

For this man, that sort of poor lifestyle choice was basically completely natural; he burned so much energy fighting that he had claimed more than once that it "basically didn't matter what he ate," yet...!

Was he trying to big brother you again?!

    Magatsu Kaori
    Mainland ~ Shopping Mall "LOVELESS"

    "Evil! Evillllll!"

The complaints of a fairy that only two people can see accompany the steps that carry you into the entrance-way of a Shopping Mall, slightly more soaked in water than what you had expected to be today.

"Ahahaha, sorry, sorry. I really didn't mean for that to happen, but none of the boats would have been ready in time! I mean, at least it was kinda fun, right~?"

While the technical culprit of the situation -Haru- apologizes in a bashful sort of way. To her, riding that monster bike of hers was not an event that was particularly traumatic, but by that same token, using said monster motorcycle as a "makeshift boat" to sneak away from the island during the technical 'free time' between missions, was...

    For the fairy, somewhat traumatic.

It had started about a week ago, when Haru had noticed you browsing shopping sites on the phone, looking for replacement clothes for the ones that inevitably got torn during the course of assignments. It was easy to get those sorts of things shipped back to the island if you put in a request, but she seemed to think that wasn't "any fun at all!" and had told you she would take you shopping with her the next chance she got, and to be fair...

This was the next chance she had gotten, but she had had to jump through quite a few hoops to make it happen since you only had around for hours to work with, and as far as Mirai was concerned, those hoops had left plenty of things to complain about-!

Was it the splash of water that had hit everyone at the end after ten minutes of a perfectly dry trip? Being at the epicenter of a sonic boom near the start? The somewhat shaky ride that had forced you both to cling to various parts of her body (waist and hair respectively) in order to avoid slipping off? The fact that a motorcycle is truly not meant to function as a boat and was perhaps an objectively crazy idea that could only be born from a mage's common sense? All of the above?

...Objectively speaking, there were certainly things to complain about.

Objectively speaking there were also good things that normally would not happen too, and so far all of this had been done for the sake of getting you here, so-!

While the fairy is being her usual snarky self, it's hard for either of them to really guess your reaction right away.

"She's a crazy speed demon! All of this so she can dress you in clothes, she might have a pervert's heart too! It's always the chivalrous ones that are secretly shady, big-sister types are dangerous, be careful-!"

"Eh? Pervert? Dangerous? I'm buying myself stuff too-!"

    Snark vs snark, then:

"...Although my muscles are getting a little too big to be cute in most things. Not as much fun to dress me up. Jeans and t-shirts are safe on me, I like safe."

    -A sudden moment of self-consciousness?!

    Tennouji Kyoko
    Apartment Complex Lobby - Izanagi

Four hours wasn't much free time at all, and so you didn't mind responding to Hiro's request for you to leave your room and come downstairs. As far as training partners went he was probably the one that suited you the best, neither had to worry about accidentally hurting the other in any critical way outside of simulations, and so he was one of those rare few that could take your "full technique" in such a way that you are constantly forced to push it to accomplish anything, in other words...

The two of you were moving goalposts that kept pushing the other one forward, of course it was slightly odd that he would seemingly want to train right after a long plane ride; he was more the type to polish up his guns and take a power-nap, but...

    "Ah, you got my message."

...It all makes sense when you see him, although in some ways, it also makes you feel a sudden instinctual pain towards his bank account, which must of just taken a substantial hit, namely...

"They came in while we were away, so I thought I'd set them up in the lobby and settle the score before we went out again."

-He had bought not just one BlazRed cabinet, no, it seems he had splurged so hard that he had gotten all four games in the series sitting in the corner in cabinet form, as if in the first stage of building an entire arcade inside of the base itself, which wouldn't be hard considering the "apartment complex" was more like a "five-star hotel."

Well, if Hiro spent it he probably had it (unlike a certain someone) but for you in particular...

This sort of development is dangerous...

"Current score is 199-200. I'm ready to even it up."

It's the sort of thing that would destroy your outdoor spirit over holidays-!

    Exodus (Complete)

Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stilled and the actors leave the stage, the story will never truly end.

Regardless of the form it takes, as long as there are memories of it's existence, the story will continue on.

In a small ward in the heart of a once devastated town, life carries on as it always has...

    Because of you.

    Please, remember it warmly.

We'll continue to walk down this path for eternity.

    Tennouji Kyoko
    Apartment Complex Lobby - Izanagi

    "..."

Tennouji Kyoko is, by nature, a quiet person, but her silence at this moment wasn't caused by her "not having anything to say," but rather an expression of pure surprise that something like this could happen; indeed, her eyes has widened to a noticeable degree at the sheer unexpectedness of this happening, her mind trying to process what she's seeing.

Namely the fact that Hiro had bought more than one arcade machines of BlazRed.

She internally cringed at the thought of just how much money is spent to buy these cabinets.

She loves BlazRed - playing said game is one of her favorite way of spending her free time - but never in her wildest dreams did she even think of buying a cabinet, let alone multiple ones. She could if she wanted to, but the thought just never crossed her mind at all; you go to the arcades if you want to play arcade games, plain and simple.

Perhaps this shows the difference in their love for BlazRed, in which case even she must admit defeat...

    Quote Originally Posted by Hiro

... Or maybe he just felt extremely competitive in said game.

"I'm ready to make the gap bigger." She said in response, giving him a tiny smirk as an acceptance of his challenge. Walking over to the cabinets, she could felt the excitement within her growing; Hiro is not the only one to feel extremely competitive in BlazRed after all, as the feeling is mutual. The only problem for this is how she could feel her outdoor spirits on holidays plummeting, as she could see herself and Hiro spending their time just playing here; there's really no reason to go outside when one of the main reason to do so has vanished...

But that is merely a problem for another time. At the moment, she must focus on these four hours to defeat Hiro in all four BlazRed games, and she must go all-out if she truly want to prevent him from evening the score.

Still, she couldn't help but to let out a small smile as she sat on the chair in front of the machine.

A worthy rival in both combat and fighting games...

Kyoko really couldn't ask for a better partner.

    Dirac
    Izanagi - Airstrip

"I'm just the right height, moron. That shriveled up thing you call your balls is always in the path of my fists."

A decidedly uncute response from what could be considered the uncutest of all kids in hundred-mile radius. Hell, you could probably search the whole country and not come up with other candidates as horrible as Dirac. It wasn't just his appearance, which of course didn't help things. It was one thing to be a youth of 9-years under his belt and already having white hair, but the blackened sclera of his left eye, along with the glowing red pupil, made him even more eerie. For as long as he had lived, it had been enough to make just about anyone Dirac met steer clear of him.

    So why was it...

Why was no one in this goddamn hick-country in the middle of nowhere scared of him!?

It was like he had stepped in the middle of some upside-down world or something. What was even this situation he found himself? Who was Eishun to act so familiarly with him? It was creepy! Way too creepy! Was he some sort of deviant!? Did he get kicks out of someone looking up to him as an older brother-figure!? That's disgusting! Way too disgusting!

Not to mention that for some goddamned reason this backwater island had all these special terms when it came to siblings. Who even comes up with stuff like that!? Bunch of deranged lunatics left to their own devices for few hundred years!

Dirac swore that the day that disgusting term of "Onii-san" passed his lips, he'd off himself right then and there.

"Besides, four hours is too much. Whenever you're not fighting, you're talking. Whenever you're talking, I feel nauseous. Four hours of nausea is too much. Four hours of any of you is pain in the ass. Why can't you all just up and die on the next mission? Just get swallowed up and eaten alive? Or dissolved in acid? Or ripped apart? Or any of the other gory things you people have in your perverted comics?" Dirac growled, once again going off on a tirade of insults, eventually even switching back to English. "[Jesus Christ you can't even fish properly! I could just scoop up half the harbor and be done with it in five minutes! Who even fished with a pole anymore! You! You and the rest of the deviants of this island! Fuck you and fuck this place! Gaaaaaah!]"

Panting heavily after his small explosion of verbal abuse, Dirac sat down cross-legged. Like the hell was he gonna do saiza or seiza or whatever it was called here. It just hurt his legs. It was ridiculous to even sit like that.

    Snatch!

Then, without any warning, Dirac grabbed the box from Eishun's hands and hugged it against his chest. At what point he had stuffed a whole donut in his mouth, it was hard to tell. But now he was munching on with, his cheeks stuffed to the brim like a squirrel. A very angry, white-haired squirrel.

"... Hm nmt gmng mt bck (I'm not giving it back)" he added quietly, blushing slightly.

The fool had offered up the box. It was his now. Only his and nobody else's.

Nobody would come between Dirac and his sweets.

    Akito's Office - Izanagi

Was it normal for teachers to transform whatever space they inhabited into an office?

While the rooms of the other members of Squad Zero showed signs of being somewhat lived in and messy, the room that belonged to Saeki Akito was prim, pristine and order to an almost absurd degree. It was similar in nature to a principals office or a laboratory, a somewhat sterile world of spotless tables and windows overlooking the ocean that lay just beyond the distant beaches.

Unlike the others, he even left his door unlocked throughout the day when everyone was here; acting like a teacher through and through, to the point where the university students came to have their papers pregraded before handing them in to their actual professors.

Perhaps it was a result of being famous in Japan?

He was a professor that was highly sought after, thus someone worthy to teach someone of your caliber but...

This wasn't about any possible impending assignments, no...

"Hmm, it seems he really didn't appreciate your singing work Ms. Shirogane."

He was here because the glowing sphere at the top of that mountain that had been calling itself "Zeus," had taken some offense to your actions during the battle, referring to you as a Jester, before striking you boldly with lightning from the heavens, in other words...

---You were here because Nirvana had been snapped in half from the impact.

There were some things you knew how to take care of yourself, but for damage as extensive as this, the youthful teacher had more or less confirmed he would be the one handling it when you got back to base, and so...

    Here you were.

"A sign that the Gods have rather poor taste, I suppose."

A round-about compliment, meant not as flattery, but rather as a simple opinion.

"Although I will admit I've always found this COMP's design to be curious; was a pursuit of an idol life always your dream?"

    Genuine curiosity.

---Wanting to talk about one's career path was also probably another strange quality of those that pursued the path of the teacher.

    ---

    Sachiko Kuronaga
    Hangar Bay

The real question was, why had you been picked to carry the toolbox?

If you were to look at it objectively it was likely only the luck (good or bad wasn't certain yet) of the draw, Captain Yuzuriha had simply seemed to catch sight of you first shortly after receiving new orders from headquarters, and as a result you were standing here holding a toolbox as your Commanding Officer does a job that others are likely being paid quite a bit to do.

---It's rather absurd, but you've gotten used to it somewhat.

Yuzuriha was a woman of seemingly infinite talent, if there was a task that needed to be accomplished, then she would be able to do it at a level that comes across as straight inhuman... Yes, while you had never seen her work on any engine over your year here in Squad Zero (that was more of a Haru thing) she's rolling around beneath the frame with the confident efforts of a professional, asking only for you to follow her around and hand her tools when she asked for them, humming lightly to herself as the technicians leave the two of you alone in the hangar together.

---Yeah, it might be bad luck.

Like this, you'll lose some of the free time you would have had otherwise, but a helpful nature is a helpful nature; while it's somewhat disappointing in some ways, you're happy to be useful to someone who normally doesn't ask for help at all, but...

"Are you happy with this sort of life, Sachiko?"

Almost out of nowhere, the captain's strong but cheerful voice shatters the more musical atmosphere.

...And it's a pretty strange question too.

    What exactly did that mean?

    Faust
    Apartment Complex - Izanagi

    "..."

Perhaps it was because Faust was so talented in the art of escape, that he had been able to predict that beyond the door to Evette's room could only lay a trap. The words that the Capitan had used already hinted towards something being 'out of the ordinary' with this new recruit, so when he caught a glimpse of the 'girl' and the sort of equipment she was connected to, he wasn't surprised at all. Rather, he couldn't help drawing a small smirk.

"Oh... just what are you getting me into, Yuzuriha?"

Faust was too old and too wise to miss the fact that he had been lured here on purpose. He wasn't actually upset, tasks like these were rather common, especially when they came straight from the Capitain. It's just... Well, a part of him wished to one day be given a proper briefing or something of the sort. Would save him the trouble of having to improvise. Faust was a very organized man; he liked to have a game plan prepared beforehand. That said, he recognized he had to be at least a little bit grateful. Regardless of whether she was a 'human' or 'something else', she didn't give the impression of being a cocky little brat with no manners and a sharp tongue which, in hindsight, was Faust's number one wish when he turned doorknob to Evette's room.

The least Squad Zero needed was another Dirac. Perhaps due to the sheer age gap between them, Faust was often at odds with the little man. One could also argue that he was getting old. Or that Dirac was simply an unlikable punk.

    ... Both were valid arguments.

    "Now then..."

Following the quite obvious instructions he had been given, Faust gave in and pushed the red button, only to be presented with a rather troubling question. An administrator handle... It didn't take a genius to figure out what that meant. While it was true that he had mentally agreed to become somewhat of a tutor or mentor to this new recruit, administrator entailed a complete different list of responsibilities. He had to resist the urge to speak words like 'Good grief', as it wasn't the right timing to do so.

    "Faust."

Nicknames or immature jokes would not do.

If he was to welcome a new member of the family, this was the one and only way to introduce himself as.

    Shirogane Kirika
    Akito's Office - Izanagi

Glancing around the room, sterile, spotless, office-like, Shirogane Kirika quickly came to a conclusion. She didn’t like it at all. You could have a clean room that looked lived-in; she had personal experience with that, always striving to make it presentable for even the most surprise of visitors. Not to mention, it really was too school-like for her tastes. Kirika was hardly a model student and she had less than stellar classroom memories.

Of course, she had business here, so it would be exceedingly professional of her if she kept those thoughts in her head and not out of her mouth…

"Hmm, it seems he really didn't appreciate your singing work Ms. Shirogane."
The thought of the incident that led up to this point made her cheeks burn in indignation. She folded her arms in a huff, though the object of her ire had already been disposed of. How dare that stupid ball call her a jester? Wasn’t he the real clown for losing to her and everyone else?

Not to mention what happened to Nirvana was just… Through her harmonizer field too… The thought of what would have happened to her if her COMP wasn’t good for such a situation sent a chill down her spine, but the anger welling in her heart was no less abated.

"A sign that the Gods have rather poor taste, I suppose."
Kirika’s face lit up a little, letting the praise mend her injured pride.

“Old geezers simply don’t know what good music is! His idea of music is the real joke,” she grumbled. “Divinities can’t even recognize true radiance when they see it…”

"Although I will admit I've always found this COMP's design to be curious; was a pursuit of an idol life always your dream?"
The question broke the string of complaints she was muttering under her breath, and she raised an eyebrow, the question unexpected. Still, she straightened herself out, as if she suddenly had the need to be presentable.

“That’s as pointless as asking why birds fly,” Kirika said, her voice dropping the frenzied, venting tone for a composed and confident sound. “I’ve never…”

She paused, perhaps in thought, perhaps for dramatic flair. For a rare moment, the expression on her face was truly inscrutable.

    “…wanted anything else.”

Coyishly putting her hands behind her back, Kirika merely smiled, as if the previous reply was merely a good joke.

“I want to shine,” she said, puffing out her chest in pride. “And there is nothing more dazzling or radiant as being an idol. In my undeniably objective opinion, of course.”

    Magatsu Kaori
    Mainland ~ Shopping Mall "LOVELESS"

    “Eeep”

The girl hiding under a parasol took a peek to the outside and quickly shrank back under the implement’s shadow, taking a firm grasp of Haru’s shirt with one of her hands as she hid behind her back. Those actions, along with the fact that she was holding a parasol and wearing a pair of sunglasses that made her look like a ginormous dork, were enough to call anyone’s attention. The white hair and the almost unnatural paleness of her skin also didn’t help matters. That even all that didn’t seem enough to alleviate her obvious fear of sunlight, and that she was going out of her way to avoid any contact with strangers while clinging to her companion was just the cherry on top.

But despite it all, and despite the fact that she had been unexpectedly splashed with water just half a hour earlier, Kaori seemed to be kind of happy.

“I-it’s alright, Mirai-chan. Haru-nee took us here because I wanted to… it is my first time going to a shopping mall instead of getting clothes through shipping orders… so I wanted to experience this…”

While saying so, Kaori took an interested look at her surroundings, instantly zeroing into the fashion shops exclusively dedicated to clothing and accessories. Last mission, Zeus had reduced her favorite jacket to cinders with a well-aimed bolt of lightning, something that had caused the vampire quite a lot of distress. How did you only manage to fry her jacket in the first place? Was that god aiming to annoy her rather than trying to cause actual damage?! It had been a very irritating experience, all things considered.

She had lost track of the snarky exchange between Mirai and Haru, but the last phrase her older sister figure made her to snap out of her reverie and pay attention once again.

“That- that’s definitely not true, Haru-nee!” Kaori replied, forgetting her fears for a moment as she waved her hands around energetically. “You’re very cute already, and I’m a hundred percent sure we can find something that will suit you just fine! A cute dress, or perhaps something like your usual outfits but cuter… There are a lot of possibilities here!”

It seemed that, carelessly, Haru had pretty much sealed her fate of being Kaori’s dress-up doll today, instead of the other way around…

    Sachiko Kuronaga
    Hangar Bay

There was a curious lack of activity in the hangar, actually. She wondered if Yuzuriha had something to do with that. She'd have to ask what they were working on. It was probably either secret, or personal. Personal was more likely.

Sachiko adjusted her grip on the toolbox to avoid dropping it as she brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. She absently wondered if she would have any more free time after this though. She'd missed seeing Kyoko and Hiro this morning. She didn't have anything against the captain, of course, but she'd found herself accompanying the captain particularly frequently lately when she needed help with various tasks, and she was feeling a little like an assistant. Not that she'd consider that a bad thing. Far from it. She was glad Yuzuriha trusted her enough to come to her as frequently as she did.

Quote Originally Posted by Captain Yuzuriha

The question caught Sachiko off guard, though not because she didn't know how to answer it. After all, why wouldn't she be happy? She was surrounded by friends here. The issue was that it's context was completely invalid. It was a question about a subject that had been nipped in the bud the day they met. After all, she hadn't been given any say in the matter. This life was the one she'd been given.

"I don't understand," she answered, "I mean, why do you ask? Have I been acting funny lately?"

Choice or not though, she didn't really care. She had a reason to be here, a reason to get up in the morning. She knew that people needed her. And most importantly, she cherished all of those people. Over the past two years, they'd become almost like family to her. It wasn't as though she'd been isolated from her old life either. She had plenty of time to visit her high school friends and her family. She made a mental note to call her sister later. She was well overdue.

A moment later, it occurred to her that she hadn't actually answered the captain's question though.

"I-I mean, yeah, of course I'm happy. Why wouldn't I be?"

"Preference acknowledged, beginning start-up of Anti-Spirit Suppression Unit. Please wait one moment."

The voice that exists over the speakers must be a different 'entity' to the girl in the seat, as her body remains completely motionless all throughout it's response to your answer. It was probably your seriousness that had landed you here right now, the 'kids' were probably a bit more prone to jokes or inappropriate nicknames, and if this girl was what she seemed to be -a form of robot- it was likely that the technology involved in it's construction was on such a different level to anything else at the base that they couldn't be trusted with "mentoring" her in a correct way, yes...

---Prototypes were expensive after all, still...

    Administrator huh...

"Initiating Program #381, diagnostic repair and analysis... All vital systems online, emotional circuit online, sensory systems... Working at maximum efficiency. Diagnostics Check Clear. Current Battery Life, 7 Days."

    Eyes shoot open.

    "Exiting Sleep Mode."

For humans, the process of waking up is a gradual thing, but this girl simply stands straight out of her chair as she finally speaks with her own body rather than some nearby computer doing things for her sake. It's jarring, a sudden switch from "unconsciousness" to "perfect lucidity," but that is what the girl has as she stands, eyes shining like gems as something within the irises adjusts itself like a camera lens to light.

"Greetings Administrator Faust, I am the Anti-Spirit Suppression Prototype Unit: EVE #7. Administrator Yuzuriha assigned me the secondary designation "Evette." However, with the completion of my previous assignment, "Wait in room for new Primary Administrator," Administrator Yuzuriha has become a Secondary User. As Primary Administrator, you may assign me a new name if you so wish."

Her voice is somewhat strange, neither completely emotionless or complete robotic; it comes across as slightly stilted but is ultimately pleasant enough, a "human voice" through and through...

"This Unit is both peace and battle capable. COMP Designation is Prototype: Hybrid. I am equipped with Spiritual Swords of the Michael Class, a Reinforced Battle Frame, and Anti-Observation Fields to counter potential quantum interference through theoretical "Denial of Existence."

Explaining herself to you with a robotic sense of sincerity, the girl that has continued to talk in a single uninterrupted flow until now stops for a moment, and then continues with a slightly bowed head and pose:

"Directive is to assist Squad Zero under guidance of the Administrators. Special Directive from Creators is to not allow Squad Zero Member Dirac to interfere with my systems under any circumstances. Is the current situation a hostile one? Have we been ordered to scramble? Base Alert is not currently detected. This Unit is ready to receive orders, all tasks will be accomplished without fail."

    ...Yeah.

This sort of thing was probably best left in your hands.

Who knows what sort of immature ideas the others would get.

    Mainland ~ Shopping Mall "LOVELESS"

"But it's true, my biceps are getting a little too big-! A little muscle is fine, but I don't want to look like a bodybuilder-! When I told the captain I was worried about it she just kinda laughed at me-!"

For someone who was so obviously a tomboy, she could be surprisingly feminine in certain ways when it came down to it...

"But hearing you say I'm cute makes me happy~" Spinning around as she says it, the girl winks once in a way that's absolutely designed to poke the already pressed anger button of the nearby pixie, "Kaori~ If I ever fall completely victim to the muscles curse would you consider being my wife? If I'm accepted no matter what I think I could bear with turning into an overbuff girl~!"

And she could also say some things that came across as 'outliers' to her normal conversation topics-!

Really it's almost certainly a joke, one made in jest to annoy a fairy that had some sort of 'jokingly depraved' image of her intentions but, that sing-song voice...

It's kinda convincing, and while you know it's just a form of teasing, something said with but a wink and a spin as she grabs your hands and pulls you along with her...

It's still not something you had really expected to hear-!

"W-What did you just ask?! I knew it! A corrupt heart! Corrupttttt!"

Still, "LOVELESS" was a Shopping Mall Chain that was growing more and more popular over the years, to the point of being the subject of many an online rumor.

Founded ten years ago, and exploding with popularity in a manner that could only be called absurd, they were shopping malls that seemed to just explode into existence all over the world in only a few months. Seemingly using aggressive placement as their strategy, there were dozens of them present in Tokyo alone, and stuffed to the brim with the latest fashions, technologies, and even genuine occult shops (which the SDCD had gotten pretty angry about) they were a place where people were present twenty-four hours of the day, every day.

In that sense it was a natural deterrent for a person like you, but...

They were still interesting places to read about; there were stories online about shops that only show up to certain customers, others that only show up to groups or to those who were alone. Heck, there were even stories of people going into one LOVELESS establishment and coming out a completely different one miles and miles away... Heck, there was even one story about someone going into a LOVELESS Mall and coming out in a place they had called the "Milky Way," but...

That was an outlier story that had quickly been squashed, and while the abundance of rumors had the Agency looking into it, the results had turned out to be negative... So the malls probably weren't actually enchanted like rumors seemed to imply, that, or...

They were just enchanted in a way that no one was able to discern.

    Still...

Roaring with life, you find yourself in an unfamiliar situation that is just as exhilarating as it is terrifying-!

"We have a few hours, so we don't have to limit ourselves to clothes! Toys, stuffed animals, weird fortune tellers, mall food courts-! I kinda messed up our ride here, so I'll pay for everything today, no worries, just tell me where you wanna head first~"

    "As you should!"

"Yeah yeah, I'll pay for you too."

    Tennouji Kyoko
    Apartment Complex Lobby - Izanagi

---It's the dangerous feeling of a personal arcade cabinet.

The lobby itself had always been beautiful in a professional sort of way, but this was the sort of personal touch that was more in like with the tastes of the "younger generation of exorcists." With a marble fountain placed directly in the center of the room, the sight of koi fish swimming around the what amounted to a massive aquarium was easily the sight that drew the most attention upon entering the establishment, and combinations of stained glass and chandelier lighting gave rise to a 'classical' sort of look that was far removed from the messier rooms of the inhabitants.

But such things made sense; while this base was hidden even from normal members of the SDCD, it wasn't like the ability to physically remove it from being able to be spotted by boat had been perfected yet. Various visual wards were only effective up to a distance of 800 meters away, and thus anyone that came any closer than that would see the isle emerge from 'fog,' an island that is not registered on maps, and will be scrubbed from any that happen to be created in the future due to a rather ingenious 'jinx' by the Agency.

In those circumstances, the cover story was that this isle was a hot-spring resort for V.I.P guests. It wasn't entirely a lie either, while the island was artificial it had been built with hot spring facilities, beaches, and aquatic moorings; and while the airstrip was slightly harder to justify, it was simply treated as a sort of "Extra Service" done by the island's staff. A few curious passerby had happened by as a result, but the belief of a resort made it easier to modify their memories slightly on the way out.

So, in some ways building an arcade off to the side was probably not as "classical" a look as the higher-ups were going for, but video-games were a rising trend, so having an arcade built into the side was totally fine, and now that the feeling of 'I just have to walk downstairs to play' has sunk into your hands, it's a reality that is slowly becoming more and more appealing-!

"My powers have doubled since last we fought."

Voice dry as it always was when he started telling jokes or quoting movies, the stoic-faced young man cracks a smile behind closed eyes, hands drifting to the buttons with practiced grace.

"Today, I predict nothing but my victory."

As a genuine clairvoyant, those sorts of words were certainly a 'taunt' all their own; many members of Squad Zero couldn't tell exactly how Hiro's 'ability' worked, but you had been around him enough to know it didn't stop at 'seeing the future' or 'beyond the horizon' (although that was certainly something he could do to an extent), sometimes his 'soul' just drew his attention to things that it found interesting... Somehow...

Even he didn't really know how it did what it did, but it didn't make it any less effective.

    "Steel Jaegar!"

The chipper female announcer calls out his choice with electronic passion.

    Steel Jaegar huh? Command Grabs...

It was the usual choice, in spite of being a sniper by trade (or perhaps because of it) he enjoyed doing critical damage during brief moments of weakness in his opponent's stance.

"Although I saw quite a few other things as well, some rather strange."

    Oh?

"For example, a new squad member has appeared within the building. She arrived inside of a steel container."

    ...Eh?

    Izanagi - Airstrip

"Four hours is nothing more than the blink of an eye, kid."

...Is that what he had gotten out of all of your carefully chosen complaints?

In some ways it's impossible to be surprised, after all, insults bounce harmlessly off of those sorts of people. It had been well-thought out on your part, a slightly more personalized burst of vulgarity and rejection towards someone who was either really naive and idealistic (dumb), or some combination of smart and cool-headed that just didn't take real offense to 'minor inconveniences.'

...Of course, there is a brief moment of 'regret' as his hands close around the empty air where his specially prepared pastries had once existed, but he mourns the loss for but an instant, having mentally catalogued this as an option the very moment he had offered the box to you.

---To dwell on regrets is to dwell needlessly on suffering.

At least it had gone to a decent cause, even if it meant he'd have to borrow money from Hiro again to buy something else for the next flight over...

"Sure, fishing with magic would be easy. But just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should do something, you know? Life's not all about results, the experiences themselves are the important parts."

He must think he sounds cool, because his crossed arms and smile seem to be awfully pleased with himself.

"There's a certain magic to fishing with a pole. Real magic, not the type you find in a computer. Meditation, communion with nature, inner peace... You can't get those things out of scooping up a river and running it through a strainer. Could try it yourself, might do you some good, you're always so uptight and angry."

    Another pause, then:

"Also, the donut box... You're welcome."

Just had to throw that in at the end huh?

Which was why Hiro's jokes usually hits her home, though it seems only she's able to genuinely appreciate his effort at lightening things up, which leads to a (small) increase in his jokes that's thrown at her, rather than to the others, which kinda defeats the original purpose...

    Maybe it's just introvert things.

Gotta look out for each other in this wacky squad after all.

But she isn't going to let that happen so easily.

"The future isn't set in stone." She replied smoothly with her own movie quote, even as the announcer announced the character that Hiro picked.

    Steel Jaeger... so command grabs.

She was tempted to just use Alpha-1 and completely zoning him, but that won't be any fun at all. So instead, she chose to use her trusty main Void, an ultra-close combo character who has the ability to close the distance between players in an instant, quite similar to how she fights in real life. She can always react in time to any throws, so his only real option is to caught her in the middle of a whiff, or to use it through his own combos...

It's nearly certain that she's going to dominate most of the match, but a single mistake can undo all of her hard work in an instant. In other words, this is going to emulate fighting against a powerful demon, where a single mistake can prove fatal.

    Thrilling, just like she wanted-!

"... Elaborate." She said, her tone final as her curiosity is piqued, assuming that he saw more than just what he said. "If there's nothing to elaborate, then perhaps you can tell me other strange things that you saw."

She picked Under Hell's Creation as the BGM.

    Dirac
    Izanagi - Airstrip

"That's idiotic. If you fail, your 'experiences' don't mean jack or shit," Dirac mumbled, mouth full of donuts. "It's like this box. While you were wishy washy about it and tried to fish at the same time, I got shit done and ended up getting all the donuts. So the result is you got nada, I got lotta. So yeah, I'll stick to getting results instead of farting around on the way there, thanks."

As if to prove his point, Dirac emerged from the donut box (in which he had practically dove into) with two stuffed into his mouth, and the rest of the donuts around each of his fingers like rings. Scarily enough, he managed to look like a certain famous Green Lantern comic cover also featuring lots of rings... only with donuts this time. In the end, the whole image became quite muddled somewhere in there, resulting in just a momentary awkward silence.

"... Whatever," Dirac grunted, chewing on the sugary goodness.

Dirac let his eyes wander out towards the sea; one normal and one with a purple glow, staring at the waves crashing against shores of the artificial island. Somewhere above, seagulls could be heard cawing, laughing at the goings-on below. Sometimes Dirac wished he could be just like them. Just steal others' food, fly above their heads and shit all over them. Things would have been so much simpler. He wouldn't have had to listen to Eishun yammer on about 'effort' and 'peace' and whatever new-age hippie trash he was into this time.

"Besides, I totally could fish if I wanted to. I just don't," Dirac broke the silence after a while. "It's boring and stupid and meaningless. Plus fish smell bad. So I don't wanna. But I could if I would."

A purple eye glared at Eishun.

"And I'd sure as hell be better at it than you are."

    Akito's Office - Izanagi

"It is certainly a radiant position in it's own way."

Agreeing without really agreeing, the teacher adjusts his glasses as he begins work on the splintered COMP that lay along the length of his desk. Resistant as you were, the idea that something could just smash your trusty partner had incited light feelings of anger and slight unease, but rather than a testament that called Nirvana weak, it was a sign that the enemy had been something "absurd," an entity that could easily blast through those that would normally resist it.

Such beings were becoming distressingly more common nowadays.

    Still...

"Ideally speaking, they should exist as beacons of hope -role models- for the younger generations. Smiling even when others cry, attempting to raise spirits even when they're at their lowest... Yes, I'd say it's a rather brilliant position, a different sort of hero than those that simply pick up a sword or a gun."

Of course, having noticed the 'surprised' reaction to his earlier question, the man laughs aloud after giving his opinion:

"If my question seemed too probing I apologize; the form one chooses for their COMP is often times an interesting reflection of their mentality. Of course, the possibility that it was a simple tactical choice on your part remained, so I was simply curious as to what the nature of that motivation was, to that end I have a proposition."

Lines run down the length of his arm as the magic 'circuits' inside of his jacket flare to life of their own accord, electricity sparking at their tips as the fingers search out certain portions of the COMP's internal designs.

"An associate of mine is looking for some talent for a televised New Year's Festival at the end of the year, called "Future Meets Hope." Would you like to apply? It's a rare chance for a television spot, publicity could go quite a ways in future endeavors."

    A pause, then:

"...If you're curious. I'm being forced to dance."

...Was he good at that too?

    "No, not strangely."

Whereas you have to consider your answers for a moment, the captain's mind seems to be a track that glides smoothly and without interruption, her responses filled with a cheerful confidence that could only be called 'Grace.'

"You just never complain when I assign things to you, and it was getting a bit too quite for my tastes... So I thought I'd ask why, see if there's some hidden negative feelings welling up here, or to see if you were just too shy to resist a little~"

She was a captain who behaved in an informal manner after all, so perhaps it wasn't too surprising of a revelation. Whereas most team leaders would be the deadly serious sort at all times, Yuzuriha was only 'Deadly Serious' when the situation required her complete and absolute attention; it could simply be a result of the absurd level of power she seems to hold, power that makes most things seem akin to a 'game,' but...

The number of times you could recall her 'serious mode' coming out could be counted on one hand, and were only ever against those entities that called themselves 'Gods,' or against those opponents that managed to somehow critically injure a subordinate.

Then and only then was she the "hard-ass commander" that would ensure the absolute destruction of the enemy.

"I mean, I'm sure it must be annoying to be my assistant all the time right?"

“I mean, I’m sure it must be annoying to be my assistant all the time right?”
That, Sachiko hadn’t expected. It was only natural that as the captain of Squad Zero, Yuzuriha would have some idea of what her subordinates were thinking, but Sachiko had always thought of herself as a ‘What You See Is What You Get’ type of girl. She hadn't really expected to be asked about secrets, or bottled up anger. That said…

“Well~ what do you think?” she asked playfully. “Don’t get me wrong, I’ll give you a real answer, but now I’m curious.”

“I can't say I never bottle anything up. But doesn’t everybody do that to some extent?” she asked. “I mean, I guess that Dirac can be extremely draining, but that wouldn’t exactly be unique to me.

“And I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous of Kyoko’s relationship with Hiro…” she was glad that the captain wasn’t looking at her because she was definitely turning bright red, if the sensation akin to having her ears catch fire was any indication.

Wait, had she looked up for a moment there?! She hadn’t been paying attention! She abruptly realized that there was some potential for a serious misunderstanding regarding what she had just said.

    “I-I didn’t mean that I’m jealous of Kyoko f-for having Hiro for a partner! I’m not! Really! …I guess… I just meant that I’d like to have a… um… a partner… like that.”

Letting out a sigh, she readjusted her grip on the toolbox again and tried to get back on track.

“Look, I… uh… I’m really glad you’re so concerned about me, but I really am on the ‘glass half-full’ side of the fence for the most part. And the other part…” another sigh, “It just isn’t worth dwelling on. It just feels like so much work to stay angry about anything. I mean, I have things to do. And if I’m stewing over something that’s trivial in the grand scheme of things, I’m not doing things.”

To some, this would seem incredibly naďve, but where Sachiko was concerned, it made complete sense. People could spend their entire life stewing over every little thing that didn’t go their way… and every second they spent doing that was a second wasted. Every minute, every hour, would be a minute or hour that she wouldn’t get back.

She wanted to live her life instead of regretting it. Was that really so bizarre? There were people out there who spent months, even years stewing over problems that they weren’t even suffering from anymore except inside their heads, all because they wouldn’t let go of their anger. To her, that was the insane thing to do.

“I promise, you have nothing to worry about,” she smiled: the perfect one for the occasion, as always. “You could never annoy me just by asking for help with a few chores… or… whatever this is…?” …what was the captain working on anyway? “When it comes to that, it doesn’t matter to me that you’re my boss: I’m always more than happy to do stuff with a friend. Whatever it looks like to you, that’s really all this is to me.”

    Shirogane Kirika
    Akito's Office - Izanagi

It was times like these when Kirika thought Akito-sensei was a mind reader, because everything had just said would have been points she would have eagerly explained… in a more colorful manner, anyway. It was as if from her few words he had already seen right through her, down to the very core. Not that it bothered her particularly. She considered herself to be a fairly straightforward person—what you saw was what you got. It was a kind of deliberate, personal branding.

Her image was exactly the same as the person underneath.

“I’m not particularly practical, sensei. It’s all preference.” She admitted this honestly, because Nirvana was the way it was. She’d seen a wide variety of COMPs from experience with the others, but nothing really seemed to be as definitive as hers.

The gears in her mind turned at the mention of a proposition—and began running at full throttle when he explained exactly what that proposition was.

“Are they just looking for content in general? Not that I wouldn’t mind a spot at all, but there are things such as theme and the content of other performers to consider.” A surprisingly business-like reply from her. Though, she couldn’t entirely say it was for the show’s wellbeing. If she wanted to shine, she would no doubt need to set up the circumstances for her to succeed. “I’d like to take a look at that before I can say I’d accept, but… the world always needs more of me to go around~”

She laughed, before thinking about the second part of the offer. That is, Akito-sensei dancing. Was he bad? Was he good? Well, as a fellow teammate, she had to account for all situations.

“Well, if you need dancing help, I could always offer some advice from yours truly… That, or I’ll put on a performance so dazzling nobody will remember it.”

    Magatsu Kaori
    Mainland ~ Shopping Mall "LOVELESS"

“Eh?! Ah…!” Kaori couldn’t help it, even if she knew it was a joke, it was just so unexpected and she was caught so off-guard that she couldn’t help but to blush intensely, all of her blood rushing to her face momentarily. She found herself completely tongue-tied, unable to muster a reply, and only producing confused sounds from her mouth.

She was definitely weak to this kind of frontal attack. A bit pathetic for a vampire, that much was for sure.

However, Mirai’s explosion thankfully rescued Kaori from having to come up with a reply to that, and she was content with letting herself be meekly dragged around by her hands. The joking around had the effect of making Kaori less focused on her fears of both sunlight and strangers, and the hikkikomori vampire was now looking at the diverse shops of the mall with curiosity.

When Haru asked what they wanted to do, Kaori tilted her head slightly as she thought. “I don’t think we can do everything, if we only have a few hours… we do need to buy replacement clothes, for the both of us…” The white-haired girl paused as she considered the options, and noticed something odd. “Fortune telling? What’s that?”

Ah, there it was again. Although she was amnesiac, Kaori had seemed to retain memories of the normal world and of common sense, as well as some knowledge of her past, like knowing how to play the piano, for example. However, once in a while, weird gaps in her memories appeared, and she exhibited a surprising lack of knowledge of some basic things. Perhaps her head was more scrambled than it seemed in the first place, or it was indicative of a really sheltered past, but either way, it was clear she had no idea of what fortune-telling was.

"She was on the same ship as my arcade cabinets. A steel case, enchanted Tungsten, weapons grade. The circumstances made me think it was a sort of weapon at first, but when the Captain opened the container a girl came out... I am not positive admittedly, but the circumstances make me believe she isn't quite human; those cases have always been airtight after all, and her body appears to be composed of an unknown metallic material as well..."

Of course, inhuman members of Squad Zero were not exactly a rarity. Even those members who seemed to be purely and completely human (such as yourself) would easily come across as "monsters" to those of a more normal disposition in life; and with a vampire and a literal poltergeist as other members none of you could really be too surprised about another "odd person" showing up, but...

What he was describing sounded kinda like a robot...

"Whoever she is, she has an active soul so she is alive... But it's a strange aura. Couldn't tell much more than that from a single glance, and it's not quite my jurisdiction to look into secrets too much."

---In other words, he hadn't wanted to risk the Captain noticing him spying on her.

Technically it shouldn't be possible to notice something like that, but by god if someone could do it, it would be the Captain.

    Still...

"Some other tech was on-board as well, that's what the Captain is working on; some sort of upgrade to the ship. It's proto-tech, so they took the usual engineers off for it's installation."

Seemed he had been 'spying' for quite awhile regardless...

"In slightly more mundane news, Haru and Kaori used her bike as a makeshift boat. Seemed to be headed towards the mainland, so they're probably getting into trouble somewhere; the Captain seems to be on the verge of 'girl-talk' with Sachiko, Dirac is being Dirac and Eishun is being dense, Sensei is recruiting Kirika for some sort of idol concert, and... Yeah. Guess those are only slightly out of the ordinary."

---It's kinda scary how easy he could keep track of people, but that was probably just a sniper's sense...

"But Takamiya-Sensei came to visit me as well, brought me a custom-built bow... Still refuses to use guns for some reason, but eh, old-fashioned exorcists are old-fashioned, he's like eighty-years old at heart."

Dry commentary on his teacher as the match begins to load.

    Yes.

Takamiya Sensei only existed as such a figure to Hiro himself, to you, he was simply Takamiya Shinobu. An exorcist from Hiro's original unit in the SDCD, and the man that had apparently taught him how to fight; not just to shoot, but how to hide his presence, craft his own ammunition, and avoid the weaknesses that existed within the heart of a sniper's style.

You had only met him a couple of times, but he was pretty powerful if strict and formal, using a compound bow rather than guns; sadly, his body seemed to reject the use of COMPs, and so the teacher had parted ways with the student.

---Even if the student still seemed distantly attached, in a tsundere sort of way.

"I mean, guns are superior in basically every way, right?"

Although the only reason you could tell that was the case...

Was because somewhat childish behavior came out of Hiro when the conversation was about him...

    Izanagi - Airstrip

"Doesn't mean anything if you lose, eh?"

---What was to you an awkward silence, was the thinking time of the overly relaxed youth. In some ways it was pointless to fish; food and other supplies were never an issue here on the island, and the imported goods were almost guaranteed to taste better than anything anyone managed to fish out of this basically enchanted ocean, but still...

    There's meaning in meaningless things.

And even more meaning in failures, therefore...

---He can't really let that sort of comment go completely unopposed, or rather...

It would be reckless of him to do so.

"You learn much more from a failure than a success. There are times where you can't afford to lose yes, but if you don't stumble around a few times, you'll slam into a wall instead eventually. Even fishing has lessons it can teach, so hell-"

Chuckling to himself, he sits up straighter.

"Let's make a bet. See if you can pull through on all that bluster. You vs me, see who catches something here first. If you win, I give you all the candy I got in my room; I win, your dessert is mine for a week, and you can't use swears for the rest of the day."

An easy proposition (to shoot down with a laugh), but-

"...Unless you're scared of losing. All talk, no game?"
