Well, I somehow got through the episode. It feels a lot more Macross F-y than I hoped (all the parts of Macross I specifically disliked, i.e.boring teenage romantic drama) but I'm willing to give it another chance. Heck, 3 episode rule I guess.

Endro~ was fun. it's going to be Kirara of this season.
I enjoyed Magical Girl Spec Ops. I've always liked the idea of what MC's do after they save the world, and this one seems just edgy enough to be fun without going overboard like Site did.
I also now have a desire to take the Kaguya OP and put in a Bond theme and see if any sync up. Probably a Moore one, to go with the psychedelic visuals.

Asuka is a mahou shoujo marketed directly to gunfags/tacticoolfags. It's pretty edgy and, to be perfectly honest, more "niche" than "good". But it has that World of Darkness thing about treating people with superpowers in the modern political climate as, well, the way people with superpowers would be treated under the modern political climate. Here's hoping they expand on it a bit more, since the anime will likely rapidly outpace the translated parts of the manga.

First episode of Girly Air Force actually grew on me. Probably because I expected it to be a lot trashier and half-assed, despite me making Infinite Stratos jokes about it.
The actual shameless harem trash of the season is Date a Live, but I'm old and wise enough to recognize that DAL is both in on its own jokes while also being unironic with the premise and happenings.

Asuka seems to be lacking in budget, but the little details that matter (i.e. the guns) are there, so I'll be cautiously optimistic.

What's up with Hikoutai's art? In that first scene it feels like the men are all animated normally, while the girls are CG rigs. I could understand it if the girls were the pilots and the men were the support characters, since the girls would need to be CG to blend in better with the planes they're constantly in. Not excuse it, but I'd at least understand it. But then all the men get in the planes and keep their normal animation against the obvious CG of the plane, and everything looks like trash again.
And as I was typing that I looked up the studio and it's the Berserk 2016 studio. At least they're improving?

Oh nice, I was gonna check that one out for morbid curiosity. Glad it seems like it won't disappoint.
I don't know how much you'd get from it. It's nowhere near Handshakers bad, just really bland with wildly different art from scene to scene and character to character. There's not even any really stupid animation like Guts sliding out of frame.

The 2D is because the men don't have much screentime and it's less costly to go 2D for characters like that than it is to create 3D models that won't be used again
Outside of that, I think the show is great. The airfighting in particular (which was the focus of the episode) was really great. I think it's far from Berserk 2016 disaster level.

This season is unexpectedly god-tier for manga adaptations (+ Jojo from last season). Mob, Kaguya and Neverland all have really good first episodes. I haven't read Mob but I'm a devout Kaguya reader and I like Neverland's first arc in the manga and I can say both of them actually nail it as adaptations for once. It's such, such a good feeling to not be disappointed by an anime adaptation of a manga I like.
