I'll try put it in as few words as possible, and forgive me the lack of more literary terms. Essentially, the Little Prince is an allegory for the inner child adults so often let wither and die as we grow more "rational" and "mature". It's not a real character, not in the sense of representing a fictional human. Making it into one, giving it likes, dislikes, and a history, is disregarding everything that makes it what it is, it's just sticking the name on a foreign puppet and calling it the Little Prince. It is utterly disrespectful to the work it steals from.

Maybe they can find a way to make it not be an abomination, heck, Nursery Rhyme exists, but I would really rather they just stuck to borrowing characters from myth.

I think if the Little Prince is like Nursery Rhyme, we'll be okay. If you consider Nursery Rhyme's whole schtick was being a story to fulfill the wishes of children, then the Little Prince could be seen as the other side of the coin, a figure to help adults recapture their wishes of childhood. Since concepts, like Nursery Rhyme and Pale Rider can be brought forward as servants, if the Little Prince acts more as a reflection of his master's past than as an independent creature, I think that will achieve his purpose and allay your concerns.

Apocrypha is called that because it's an AU (having been written before AUs were all over the franchise).

Mind sharing what "AU" refers to here? That's an acronym that is literally used for tons of different meanings within a whole range of different disciplines, so I don't really think you should expect us to automatically know what you're talking about...
