I'll try put it in as few words as possible, and forgive me the lack of more literary terms. Essentially, the Little Prince is an allegory for the inner child adults so often let wither and die as we grow more "rational" and "mature". It's not a real character, not in the sense of representing a fictional human. Making it into one, giving it likes, dislikes, and a history, is disregarding everything that makes it what it is, it's just sticking the name on a foreign puppet and calling it the Little Prince. It is utterly disrespectful to the work it steals from.
Maybe they can find a way to make it not be an abomination, heck, Nursery Rhyme exists, but I would really rather they just stuck to borrowing characters from myth.
