One of the best things perhaps about Vivienne Bianchi was that she would never interrupt someone while they told their story, but then, nor would she show any kind of reactions seeing the kind of issues she was afflicted with. At the very least, this made for a very calm story-time, and could for some pass as having a very attentive audience.

Alex's question visibly stirred Vivienne's thoughts, who put a finger to her chin and looked upwards as she pondered on the concept of 'impossible'. She seemed to reflect for quite a bit on the matter, remaining silent and thoughtful for a good dew minutes, before letting out an inaudible 'ah' as she once more turned her attention to Alex, and answered him with:

"Hmmm... Impossible... there are things... impossible to us... but possible to others. Possibility, Impossibility... matter of perspective."

Using the curious object which Alex held and had caught her attention, Vivienne continued her explanation:

"Possible for you to read, to use this... but not for me."

She was most likely alluding to the fact that Alex could obtain some valuable information by looking at her broken(?) watch, compared to Vivienne, who knowing nothing about it, could not extract anything from it -- it was possible for one, and impossible for the other.

"Your shorthand too... possible for you to read, impossible for me to."

A very observant and attentive girl, for Vivienne to have remembered and noticed that Alex was writing in shorthand while they were on the bus to Road's End.

"What is... impossible about Mc Lamperts' deaths?"

...'Fun'...That is an interesting, albeit rather naive approach...The dark, sinister side of these mysteries, that make you shiver in fear and unable to sleep at night, all the unimaginable things that could just straight come out of one's nightmares...Thrilling, certainly, but could I really call it fun?

But then...She probably doesn't know, does she?

I patiently waited until she finished talking; well, I wanted her to finish answering my questions in the first place.

"Do you..." I began, carefully choosing my words, "believe that there is...a logical explanation behind everything? That there is...nothing beyond what we know and are aware of, lurking in the shadows?" Trying to give an example, I quickly added, "Do you think that all there was to Rosencrantz was what we could see of him?"

While thinking a bit more about the other things she said, I pulled out my pendant from under my shirt and fidgeted around with it; the crystal at the bottom already had a faint glow to it, illuminating the patterns on the inner side of the metal with its bluish light...

I let go of the pendant and turned my attention back to Elaine. Then, with a faint smile, I continued,

"I'd like to think that you are who you claim to be. If you can say that straight into my eyes, I'll believe you without hesitation."

"I would also like to think that I am who I am...Though I can't really prove it in any way. Guess it comes down to your trust."

But is she going to trust me? Is that all there is to this guy as well, just an 'old boyfriend'? Well, doubting her probably wouldn't come through too well while talking about trust.

"Oh, and dinner is on me."

"... Zaza, sometimes what you say is scarier than any movie," Cesarina said with a slightly troubled face. "I think you would make a great horror novelist, really. But no, it has nothing to do with candy or their ilk. Oh, corn is heavily featured in this movie, but what it is really about is... Oh, there we go!"

On the small television screen something was happening. A group of children had surrounded a small town diner and were now viciously attacking all the adults there in rather... imaginative ways while another child, one that looked like a mix between a cult leader and an Amish preacher, watched on with great pleasure. This was all punctuated by narration from one of the kids who seemed rather calm about the fact that even his own parents were victims to this bizarre attack.

"See, this is a movie about a cult of something-or-other that these kids have created and how they... no, actually that would be spoilers," Cesarina said, grinning sheepishly. "Let us just watch on. I am sure you will catch on to the plot rather quickly! I mean, it is from one of the greatest novelist of our time, Stephen King!"

And so, in the dimly lit room, illuminated by the beam of light coming from the television set, the two girls continued to watch the bizarre movie, talk about all the wrong choices made by the couple who were the protagonists and just how... strange the movie was, even for a horror flick. However, as minutes passed on, Cesarina's answers became more and more infrequent, and it was clear that the girl was starting to nod off. It had been a long day for both of them and it was no wonder that the green-haired youth had her exhaustion catch up to her.

Therefore, to no one's surprise, by the halfway mark of the movie... Alexstrasza could feel a sudden shift in Cesarina's posture, followed by a weight setting on her own right shoulder. Looking to the side, Cesarina had fallen asleep and was now nuzzling (and drooling) against the blonde, almost like seeking a bit more warmth.

Perhaps there was a bit more to it than that, however.

After all, when about ten more minutes had passed, Alexstrasza could hear a weak, slightly scared mumble emanate from Cesarina.

    "Mammina..."

It seemed that no matter how tough someone's bravado, even they could catch that feeling of home-sickness.

And so the evening continued on, eventually turning into night...

A momentary frown passed by Alex's face, clearly not especially keen on recounting the mental image. However, she answered truthfully to Vivienne.

"Their hearts... they were liquefied," she said bluntly. "I am not talking that their hearts and other organs were crushed into a pulp due to their deaths, no; instead, they were turned into something resembling water. The biological matter was still there, it was simply... liquid. No car crash of complication with a surgery should have that kind of effect."

Walking over to the table and drinking down her tea with one big swig, Alex set the cup aside. She then proceeded to walk over to the window, taking a look at the descending evening sun and the town shining in the distance, with the gentle waves of the ocean barely visible. That orange light drew her as a silhouette against the glass, a rather striking image if any. From her posture it was easy to see that Alex, though she might have experienced horrible things and though she might see some of her findings as distasteful, was determined to see this through - if that indeed was a possibility here at Road's End.

"But... thank you. You are absolutely right. Things that are impossible for us, even for common sense, may be achieved by rare individuals we do not simply know about," she continued, turning back to look at Vivienne. "It is rare to see an open-minded individual such as yourself that does not shy away from topics like these, even when presented with the possibility of something impossible having happened. Which is why I would like to ask you, Mademoiselle Bianchi..."

The serious expression on Alex's face melted into her usual subdued smile.

"... Would it be too forward for me to ask your assistance in this case? You seem to have good head on your shoulders and despite your quiet nature, you seem very attentive," Alex said, glancing at her pocket watch. "To have the help of an individual like that would be very welcome."

Then, almost as if an after-thought, Alex hurried to add:

"Oh, you of course do not have to give me an answer now. I would much rather you sleep on it and give it to me when you are sure," she spoke. "After all, just as I said this could be a dangerous task to undertake. I know it first hand."

Still wearing that smile, Alex stepped forward and offered Vivienne her arm, as if to help the girl get up from the chair and to escort her somewhere.

"In fact, much rather than to mull and trouble yourself over this now, may I suggest we spent the time we have before curfew in a productive way? I always fancy a walk after tea, and the scenery of Road's End is nothing to scoff at," she suggested warmly. "So, Mademoiselle Bianchi, would you join me? A company would be welcome."

There it was again, that strangely masculine, gentleman-like etiquette that Alex adhered to. Then again, it seemed to fit her. Her clothes were rather manly too and her appearance androgynous, so perhaps it was just a matter of stylistic choice.

    Perhaps.

The Owner started frantically looking around and went to turn around to ask Cathie for water. Before she could even ask, another glass of water was set down in front of Aleen to the Owner and Aleen’s surprise. I knew she was going to come back eventually especially after I purposely did that. Aleen promptly emptied her water.

To be honest, Aleen you kind of do. Unlike you, I felt it was prudent to keep that fact quietly to myself. After all, you have red cherry filling all over your face with pie pieces stuck to while you’re chugging down a glass of water like your life depends on it. Seeing Aleen glare at Cathie, I made extra sure to not show my true feelings to everyone.

If it wasn’t for the fact that I was trying to avoid detection right now, I would’ve smiled with my co-conspirator. Everything was going nicely in my favor. Aleen was going to be incentivized for interacting with others, Cathie and Aleen’s personality issues were going to have some progression, and I have a potential source of information in this town.

Finally settling down in my quarters. I did a quick inspection of the few things. My luggage were still locked up nicely. So I started to pull out my few everyday clothes and started to think about my trip here.

It all started with my late night flight from Germany after sorting out my paperwork. Things like receiving notification of my acceptance into Pinefall High, sorting out the flight details, and other details. Dealing with the twelve hours of flight to get to the American west coast.

Dealing with another several hours trip on a bus quietly on the bus. I only started talking with my seatmate at the end of the trip. Where I made a faux pass against her and then started to maneuver through a social minefield until I somehow managed to secure a meal with them.

Got off the bus. Grabbed my luggage. Met the principal and his weird zombie owl mascots. Dropped off my luggage at my new quarters. I sat through a bunch of mandatory meetings and greetings. Used an old skill again.

After all of that, walked forty minutes to Avery’s Diner for the best cherry pie and coffee I’ve ever had. On the walk there, I got a rough layout of Road’s End. Upon getting into the diner, I met the Owner, saw a fisher girl, and met Cathie. Discovered how bad Aleen is with surprises. Promised to meet with Cathie for pie and other information.

"Remember... there are some things... better to not know...better to not see..."

Vivienne looked out of the window. Though typically she had a blank delivery, it would not be far fetched to postulate that the quiet girl looked out in reminiscence of perhaps, a previous experience -- one that shaped the warning she was now giving Alex Terrot.

    "Be careful Mademoiselle Alex."

The rhythm of her speech for that one warning was different, not slow and fragmented like her typical speech. It was a well-spoken, clearly articulated sentence, even if it lacked emotion. These were words that conveyed a message stronger than any Vivienne had tried to give Alex before, undoubtedly, considering Vivienne's unerring Gaze -- one that stared back deep into Alex's eyes as trying to burn something into there...

    "Prevention... better than cure."

Having locked eyes with Alex for a little bit longer after quoting the quite famous saying, Vivienne went back to a less 'intense' persona to answer the matter of wherever she wanted to help Alex in this investigation:

One could have expected a no, based on what Vivienne has just said, but rather the quiet girl gave Alex a nod, saying:

"... I will consider... not sure... how can I help?"

Perhaps she thought of joining in to look after Alex? That was a possible theory to the situation...... but anyways, without hesitation, Vivienne accepted Alex's arm as support to get up from her chair. Without hesitation as well, Vivienne accepted Alex's other invitation, the one concerning setting out a pleasant walk:

"But yes... we go? Having a walk... quiet scenery... always nice..."

For a moment, Lucille genuinely did think that she and Mercedes were on the same page… up until she received an unexpected invitation. About topics she had no experience in. Perhaps even negative interest in. Who looked at the janitor like that, for crying out loud? That was just, absolutely, completely… immodest.

Even so, this was Mercedes extending a hand of friendship, and that would be… rude to refuse. She’d give it a shot, and if the experience was painful, she’d never do it again.

Yes, that was the right thing to do.

“Soda’s fine, I guess…? And I don’t mind Lucy at all.” Lucille said, mixing honest opinion with clear apprehension, unsure of what was going to happen next. It couldn’t be all that bad, would it?

    That was…

It was an experience, but Lucille Faraday could not say in good faith that she would willingly attend another detailed lecture by Mercedes West about what made men attractive and how to improve her look. She didn’t think the visit was wholly unpleasant, but that it was all too apparent they were from different worlds and these conversational topics made her extremely, extremely uncomfortable.

With a flushed face Lucille buried her face into her pillow, before rolling over and fetching a book off her nightstand.

She’d read a few passages before going to bed, just to clear her mind.

Elise watched Jake as he left to do battle with the dust bunnies. She remained on the bench, repositioning herself to better take advantage of having it all to herself, and watched the sky darken as the sun sunk into the ocean.

All in all, this has been a really good day. It was a pleasant bus ride with good company. I found someone who likes sci-fi/fantasy novels, not that I think I'll be able to get Sakura to admit it out loud again. John seems like an interesting fellow. I don't know if I can help him find what he's passionate about. I wonder if he might be interested in- Eh. Maybe I can at least lend him some books.

Got to look around campus. All those sealed off areas are awfully suspicious, and I'm pretty sure that knowing what the other side of the sealed door at the end of the hallway is probably isn't going to help me sleep tonight. Why do I have to be only two doors away from that? I suppose I can't complain too much. I feel bad for whoever ended up in 219 and 218. On the other side of their walls is probably a decaying wreck. I suppose ignorance might just be bliss there.

I mean, the next section over has probably been renovated, and is just unfinished and unfurnished, but you never know... Either way it's spooky

Elise glanced back towards the dormitory. On the north end of the building where That Window was.

No. I am absolutely not going to try and sneak into the forbidden section of the dormitory, through That Window, after dark.

With that, Elise rose from the bench, collected her backpack, and marched back towards the not forsaken end of the dormitory.

Elise sat down on her bed, and rummaged through her backpack. She fished out a water bottle, which she placed it on her nightstand, and her book from the bus ride. She looked down at the cover, and considered it for a moment. With a shrug, she got up, walked over to her bookshelf, and traded it for another book before returning to her bed, and collapsing on it.

She stared up at the ceiling for a moment, before she turned over to her side, opened the book, and started reading.

I watch the movie, jumping at the appropriate parts and clinging tightly to the pillow at the thrills that occurred on screen. Even as Cesarina falls asleep on top of me, I stare at the screen, entranced by the colors and movement - I can't help myself.

I've never seen anything like this before. The soft, trembling words that stumble out of Cesarina's mouth make me pause, but I still watch.

    The sun sets.

    The movie ends.

I glance at Cesarina, gently moving her off my shoulder and onto her bed. There's something I could do, and what I should do. A hand trembling, I move the hair off her face and --

    -- I step away.

It's not right, or fair, to think like that. There's plenty of time in the day for me to try something else, so I won't need to do such things. That's why I'm here, right? To be 'better', or 'more then I was'.

This is a waste of time.

    I should leave.

It's night now, it's easier to search for the slumbering mysteries of this town at night.

Maybe I'll even find that little incentive I was given to come here, that sole reason for my attendance that was interesting enough for me to remove myself from my previous school.

I glance out Cesarina's window, watching the moon rise higher in the sky and a sigh breaks through my lips, as I idly twirl my hair. Even if it's a waste... I can't help but try, right? Try to be better then who I was before. The effort is necessary, compared to anything else. So...

I go back to my room, grabbing a pillow and blankets, and return to Cesarina's, lazily dropping them on the floor as I see her form on the bed, clutching to her doll like a lifeline. I give Benito a thumbs up, letting him know that he and I are comrades in making this innocuous, ridiculous, entirely-too-much girl a little bit happier.

The floor is fairly comfortable, even as I rearrange my blankets to be more of a fake-mattress, and lay my head down.

    A waste.

It's really inane, how much time I've already wasted here. Not that there was much I could have accomplished in a single day, but even so.. As I stare at Cesarina's ceiling, my eyelids entirely too heavy, I can't help but think to myself that it's a waste. Even with that small, infinitesimally ridiculous part of myself, the part that admonished me when I bashed Alina's head into that wall, the part that felt ashamed at the lectures I had received, the part that reminded me that there was more to life then my studies, said it wasn't a waste.

That part can go die in a hole.

I am Alexstrasza Lockhart. Once in a thousand years. That's what everyone says about me. The kind of skill and talent that only comes around once in a millennium. I grew surrounded by praise and accolades, achieved things that others can only dream of, and carved out my very name into the annals of history. This is who I am, it says in a book, surrounded by names of equal importance, Do not forget me.

This school is different. These people are strange. From Mister Oceandrop, to Cesarina Feroce, to the murmured conversations I heard on the bus -- these people are all equally different. It's not the same sort of setting that I'm used to, where you walk the halls and see a hundred different creatures and a thousand different skills. There's no casual defiance of causality here, no open discussion of what the differences between the world's turnside and the world's ordinary could mean for us when we leave. No hushed murmurs as I pass by the halls, no fearful glances.

    It's odd, for me.

I can't decide if I enjoy it or despise it.

Turning on my side, I can see Cesarina softly breathing as she rests, and my own eyes begin to flutter closed, memories rushing over me.

The conversation the headmaster and I had before I left -- I... I...

I don't feel like I'm becoming a better person, Headmaster.

I feel like I'm becoming even worse.
in the end we will make thoughtcrime impossible, for there shall be no words to express it

“Sounds like a right dependable guy.”

Words drenched in sarcasm bounced back after the story of Jake’s reliability in deception. But well, everyone was young and stupid once. Except Colt, he would always only be young. Never stupid.

“If something comes up, I’ll bring it to one of you. I’ll especially come to you if I need some new parts.”

As the two walked their way out of the scrapyard to flee the turning hands of the clock, Colt fished his keys out of his pocket, giving them his signature twirl as he and Tommy approached his bike.

“And relax, guns are a hobby and trade of mine, but not shooting, and definitely not shooting people. If I’ve ever got a dead body on my hands the first person I’m going to is the sheriff.” Saying so the student mounted his bike, thrusting the key into the ignition and giving it a crank. The 750cc flathead that Colt thought he would be replacing roared to life, and flipping his shades back on he turned to Tommy, raising his voice to match the bike. “Keep tabs on that sidevalve, would’ja? I’ll be back for it in a few days. Maybe when I swing by for those speakers we can get that sweet thing sorted out.”

Colt didn’t give time for a response. Not wanting to play the race against the clock game he floored it out of the Junk Garage.

A tad unnecessary. On a bike, the drive back to school took mere minutes. Especially burning rubber on a bike. But the weight in his pocket pushed down on the gas and before he knew it the winds were whipping past him, or perhaps he was whipping through the wind, at 90mph.

Realizing his speed Colt eased on the gas, pulling into Pinefall High with enough time to get into the dorm without hitting his curfew of 22:00.

Fingercombing his windswept hair as he made his way back to his bedroom, Colt kept his shades on the entire way. Anyone that he passed en route got no more than a ‘hey’ and a glance from obscured eyes. No need for a pokerface.

    Location: Pinefall High Dormitory

Kicking his shoes off, Colt locked the door to his room behind him. Tossing his keys onto the nightstand he pulled the gun from his pocket and sat at his desk. Flipping a desklamp on, he placed the gun atop the handkerchief that Tommy had given him along with the gun.

For a time the young man sat at his desk, frozen still. Staring down at the pistol in silent contemplation, like a statue.

“Just what am I doing… what was I thinking?”

Questioning, complaining, and chastising himself all at once he sighed. Giving his eyes a rub, Colt leaned over, grabbing a tightly latched black case leaning against his desk, one of the many things he had haphazardly unpacked earlier in the day, long before the thought of bringing a hot pistol back to his room had even entered his mind.

Setting the case atop his desk, he unlatched it. The light of his lamp reflected off the polished metal of the various tools. So clean were they that one would think them brand new, never before used. That would be a mistake. Close inspection would show tiny scuffs, microscopic scratches and marring on the surface of the metal.

Never even looking at the contents of the toolbox, Colt began plucking the tools he would need for the disassembly of the incriminating gun, laying them out in a row above the handkerchief.

“Everybody run… “ repeating what was written in the engravings, Colt spoke to the pistol laying before him, “let’s see what else you have to say.”

    [BGM]

Something moved under the non-existent light of the new moon.

A figure that could belong either to a young person, a child or perhaps a dwarf danced in the pale moon light to a tune only it heard. The campus of the Pinefall High School for Troubled Youth was silent as a grave, with nary a sound echoing across it. Even the town in the distance had grown quiet and dark with nothing but the bright red neon light of the A.D. Diner shining towards the midnight sky, along with the pinprick lights of the Big Boy's Gas Station. The only thing that ever so often marred this midnight blue scenery was the sweeping beam of the lighthouse, the white pillar next to the sea, keeping a stalwart watch for bad weather and lost ships.

But the dancing figure cared none of this.

It heard its own music, it saw its own things, and it felt content.

Softly snapping its fingers to a rhythm that wasn't there, it danced slowly through the campus area, from the parking lot to the pool, from the pool to the castle-like shape of the school, and from there... to the dormitory. It was only then that the figure paused, but only for a little while. It simply raised its eyes towards the single window in the building before it, the one that still had lights on. There it saw someone still awake, pacing back and forward in their room, too occupied to notice this swaying little silhouette in the absolute dark.

    That was fine.

It was not meant to be seen... not yet, anyway.

Oh what a day it had been! So many things had happened, so many stories had been begun, and that wasn't even the half of it! So many of them, oh so many of these youngsters...! They had made contact with people and beings and forces they could not even comprehend! Soon, of course, soon they would, but for now it was a time of blissful ignorance for all of them. It was the start of their school year, after all. They would need to be well-rested for tomorrow when the real work begun! Reforming oneself, not to mention others, was hard work. It couldn't have done it, so it gave the youngsters all the respect they deserved.

And a little bit of glee at their predicament.

But that was only for it to know.

... Was that why it shushed the large owl that had been sitting at the lone Douglas fir in the center of the campus?

At least it shut the bird up before it could hoot in an unnecessary loud voice.

And thus, in the silence, the little silhouette continued to dance to a music that came from nowhere and which nobody could hear. Then again, if there was no one else to hear it... did that music even exist? At least it seemed to think so. That's why it waltzed over to a specific window it had prepared instead of just walking normally. If one could not have fun during a joyous night such as this then where was one supposed to get their pleasure from?

    It had no answers.

    Thus it danced.

Eventually, it came to a halt before the only window at the abandoned part of the dormitory that had not been boarded up. It smiled widely, did a theatrical and nonsensical bow before the window, asking non-verbally if it was invited in. Apparently it was as with a quiet click the window became unlocked and creaked open, slowly. Behind the window was the part of the dormitories that no student had visited and as such, none of them knew. Someone would get curious eventually but for today... this was the ballroom of the small silhouette.

The night was far form over and everything was ready.

    The year could finally start.

With a laugh, the dancing shadow spun around and clapped its hands together once, snapping its fingers loudly and pointing towards the lived-in part of the sleeping dormitory.

    "!kcoR s'teL" It announced.

And then, with a big smile, it slithered in to the abandoned dormitory.

You were woken up 6 AM sharp by something that sounded almost like music blaring form the PA system of the dormitory, probably waking the whole building up.

After a long day yesterday, sleep had been just what the doctor ordered. Unlike the slightly sluggish feeling of yesterday, you were feeling practically full of energy today, ready to take on the day. And it's good thing that you did! After all, today was supposed to be the first official day of the new school year, at your new high school of Road's End. While it might have been quite different from normal high schools, it still was one... and even if you were the most emotionless, most cynical, most jaded individual, there was something about the mere idea of a new school and a new year properly started in a place you had barely seen yesterday that gave you that little jolt of excitement within you (or perhaps even a big one).

But first things first. You still had about three hours till the first class, which meant you could spend the morning the way you wanted, considering you were already up. Of course you could go back to sleep, that was always an option, but then again... there were many things to experience out there! Perhaps go meet up with your new classmates and friends, perhaps take a walk outside, perhaps properly prepare yourself for the classes...

... Or go to the cafeteria, where they were serving breakfast in about hour or so!

------ In other words, the day was yours to tackle!

A single eye blinked open, staring at a dark unfamiliar ceiling, she was awake, as despite the change in location, she kept to her schedule reliably. A difference in time zone had actually left her with slightly more sleep than was the usual, but she was confident that it would normalize given some time to adjust.

Still, she had a few bare moments to herself, get her mind in order, and ready herself for the day, slow, invigorating breaths to wake the mind and rouse the body, and if she was correct, she still had a few moments left before-

    Driiiiiiiiiiii~nnnn!

    Ah, there it was.

A hand slapped the bells with a measured amount of force, silencing without damage, gingerly avoiding the picture frames atop the nightstand, which featured an older-looking man and two boys, a pony-tailed girl holding a gun too-large for her was featured in one, to the amusement of her older, male relations.

Elaine Winters, 17, roused herself from the comfy confines of sheets and comforter, sunshine-blonde hair already beginning to return to its former thickness and length, the tail end of her hair tickling at her back. She'd probably have to start tying it up in a few weeks.

No, she'd definitely have to, possibly sooner.

Still, short for now, and easy to manage.

She stretched for a moment longer, then lifted herself out and onto her feet in a single, brisk motion, already crossing her new room with a natural energy, passing a set of posters on the wall, one featuring a damp-looking, muscular man in bold wrap-around sunglasses, another featuring a pair of confident-looking women, a small montage of them performing acrobatic, flashy-looking moves surrounding the center.

    [FATAL FURIES]

She passed to the small sink, fishing out a toothbrush (blue and white), and some toothpaste, and busied herself with cleansing her mouth from the night before, multi-tasking by fishing out her clothes for the day from a nearby dresser, placing them next to a pair of work-out clothes, set out the night before.

She'd seen a track on the trek around the school the previous day, so she figured she may as well go and avail herself of it.

Needed to work off that steak.

    The burger too, probably.

Should get to work on that other burger, too...

    Not to mention the shake...

    Hm...

Did she eat too much? She poked at her stomach, which responded with its usual growl and toned firmness, opposing the probing digit with finely shaped muscle.

Nope! If anything, seems like she didn't eat enough! She paid for her end of the meal, anyway.

Hm, she was a bit on the heavy side, though, she thought, posing in the mirror speculatively.

Just means she should get her butt on the track and work those legs!

A test of willpower to see herself through her whole routine, and then shower, without banging down the door to that little mess area!

    Yeah!

She did a brief dab of deodorant, spat out her toothpaste, and snatched up her filled water bottle, sipping at it as she began dressing for her morning work-out.

Wonder if she'd see anyone else out there.

Left step. Right step. Repeat ad nauseam.

Anybody who watches the scene occurring at the field would see a zombie; a machine carefully and precisely designed to perform the same cycle of repetitive motion, over and over again. The early breeze mixes the scent of the sea with that of fallen leaves and morning dew. The absence of avian sounds might have drawn the attention of another. The young man, John Dove, does not even listen to the pitter-patter of his own, unceasing cycle.

    Left step. Right step.

The sole purpose of this is the maintenance of basic fitness. John Dove seeks not outstanding athleticism, merely sustained performance within the human median. He does this only because a weak, unhealthy body is both unproductive, and a hassle.

    So, he jogs.

He jogs, and his mind works furiously, disconnected from the automatic labor of his lower limbs. The repetitive motion requires almost zero conscious effort to sustain, and John likes that because it allows him to think.

Moreover, there are many things to think about. The one thing he seeks. The many things he has learned. The many questions he stills bears. The mission he has to fulfill.

He has to work from overly broad hints, all of them very difficult, if not impossible to assess. John ruminates on the same few statements, pondering over and over how to collate those hints and the target individuals together.

Considering what John Dove has seen, another person in this position would have gone over several other things. Not this young man, though. To him, it was merely the confirmation of something he already believed for quite some time.

    Lies within lies within lies
    Worlds within worlds within worlds
    .

It does not matter. What matters, is that the list of potential targets has expanded to every single person in Pinefall.

Left step, right step. Repeat ad nauseam.

A jogging automaton moves incessantly, his mind devoted to his one and sole purpose. The previous day was an awkward introduction, a clash of worlds in which the young man found himself lacking.

A new day has come, and John Dove jogs with a placid smile on his face.

He is centered. He is ready.

The last great adventure of his life—in one way or another—begins in this very moment.

With the lone man, jogging in almost-enlightened detachment.

    "Aaaaaaaaagh."

Stop. Stop it. Cease, music. It's too early for this.

What sort of school did I get sent to? A military boot camp? This droning alarm, full of irritating chirps and beeps and whistles, might as well be a drill sergeant.

Maybe it's an early bird alarm. Just a bit more. Five more minutes. If I can cover my ears with a pillow, then maybe...

    "Turn it ooooooooff."

Nobody's listening. Alright, so this is hell.

Fine. Fine. I see your game, Pinefall. I'll buy the ear plugs tonight. If I'd known you would be this cruel I would've brought my own.

Get up. Bathroom. Wash up. Mirror. I look like I could murder someone.

Wince. Bruise is developing nicely. This is gonna be a pain in more ways than one. Whatever. I can deal.

Teeth. Hair. Weight. Still the same, of course.

    Clothes. Shirt. Skirt. Socks. Sweater?

    Nah, not that chilly.

Yeah, it's too early. At least two more hours is what I need, but the sun streaming through the window and the music in the air both say no. Look at that day, all fresh and beautiful and absolutely miserable.

I slam the door open with more force than necessary, and for a moment, freeze, unsure of what to do.

Then a low growl snakes through the air.

    Alright, then.

    "...the food better not suck."

Breakfast first. I can't think on an empty stomach.

I wake up. It's like nothing at all has changed. With a glance at the clock - and a failed attempt to ignore Cesarina's loud snores - I stand, brushing off my clothing before once more looking around the room. It really hasn't changed in the night, and I'm sure Cesarina will wake on her own.

Scribbling a note, (gone to breakfast, in cafeteria), I return to my own room to change into other clothing, before exiting. The halls of this school seem... a bit too wide, for my tastes, and quite a bit nicer then the fare I'm personally used to.

    This place is strange.

I move through the halls with all the energy of a dying man, rubbing my hair with a yawn as I meander towards the cafeteria.

She’d gone for a simple set up today, no hat, and a plain white shirt over some track pants she’d gotten... somewhere. She’d learned her lesson from the last time she’d bothered bringing her hat, all sweaty and crap, smelled for days. Have a nice dry hat after her shower for the morning.

She kept up her idle hydration as she crossed the campus grounds, loosening up with a mild jog and stretching her arms as she went, getting her pulse pumping and the adrenaline going, endorphins already buzzing pleasantly.

She did so enjoy her little routine, always found a way to get it done, helped that it wasn’t too complex or needing components or equipment. Just her and a good stretch of road, sidewalk optional but encouraged.

Yes, this’d do nicely, not too crowded, a good distance away as well! Gives her time to get her blood up and rearing to go.

Right then, one last little stretch, and she’d be off, a nice lunge there, and we’re off.

Hm, make small talk with the awkward-looking guy?

    Why not?

She kept up a solid pace for a couple laps, then came in a bit closer.

”Good morning! Having a good jog there? Looks like you’re in the zone, dude!”

It is animal instinct more than conscious perception that warns John of an approaching figure. Normally, he would not be one to detach himself from his inner musings while jogging, but not this time. Not anymore.

He has a mission, and a reason to partake of the hollow social niceties. So, he’ll wholeheartedly…socialize. Well, when whoever it is eventually catches up, at least.

    ???

“Good morning! Having a good jog there? Looks like you’re in the zone, dude!”
John needs a moment to put a name to the face: Elaine Winters. An apparently outgoing person. That does make it easier in a way.

“Good morning,” he replies with a curt nod, slightly dropping his pace to accommodate for speech while trotting. “And yes, I guess I kind of was.”

He smiles in the hopes she does not misunderstand his words. Again, this is the first time he is not bothered by the interruption in his morning jog.

“So, a fellow early jogger, or you just couldn’t sleep anymore?” Suddenly aware she might not share his grasp of names, he corrects himself. “I’m John, by the way.”

    “....Kill me. Kill me now.”

The loud sounds that were blaring through the PA sure achieved their purpose. At the very least they managed to rouse Anna, even if she wanted nothing more but to fall back into blissful sleep. Only it didn’t stop and kept on going and going and going even after long overstaying its welcome. In the end, all that it managed to do was ruin her morning mood. Well, coupled with her rather restless sleep at least.

God, I hope I’ll get used to this place soon. Another night like that and not even this monstrosity of an alarm might not be able to wake me.

Grabbing a new pair of clothes from the closet, Anna headed to the bathroom where she brushed her teeth and did some quick washing up. The face that reflected back from the mirror looked the same as always. Though… maybe a bit surlier than usual. If she had spoken to the red-haired kid with a face like this he probably would have legged it. Not that she could have blamed him, honestly.

Anna let out a deep breath, almost as if she trying to exhale all her frustrations away. Perhaps in a way, she was.

    There. That’s better.

Her face in the mirror was more acceptable now. Not really a happy-go-lucky expression, but she would need a lot more than some minor mental trickery for that anyway. Throwing on the last of her clothes, Anna headed back to the bedroom and towards the door to the hallway., pausing only for a second to grab her jacket from the coat hook on the wall.

Let's try out the “cuisine” then. Who knows, it might even be edible.

She settled into an easy lope, eyeballing her conversation partner with an easy eye.

    Hm.

    Maybe.

"Ah, I keep to a routine, y'know, running's just easiest to take care of, don't need any thing besides some ground beneath my feet."

She sprang off of her feet, to emphasize her point, catching her balance and maintaining speed with practiced ease.

"It's always good to work up a good sweat before the day gets going, once its done I just get kind of lazy, routine starts boring me, and I go off on whatever it is I feel like doing. Makes it a real pain to stick to a work-out regime, so I go in the morning, before I get too antsy."

Suddenly, she held a hand to her mouth, a surprisingly dainty gesture from the usually boisterous girl, "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to introduce myself, all muscle no brain sometimes."

She bounced back, the same energetic gleam returning to her eyes, "I'm Elaine, Elaine Winters. It's great to finally meet you, John."

She grinned, just-cleaned teeth gleaming in the faint light of dawn.

"It's always good to have a reliable sort of guy around, y'know?"

It was a brand new day and Elise was ready for it! It promised to be an exciting and busy day as she got her first real day of class at Pinefall.

Unless it ends up like the first week of the first year in high school where we spent most of the time bringing everyone up to the same level. We are a bunch of people from all over the world... Oh no. What if it's like french class where the teacher spends all his time teaching half the class rudimentary french while I slowly go mad in the back of the class as I'm bored out of my skull?

Elise tossed an extra book into her backpack. Just in case.

Of course, it's probably arrogant to assume I'll be one of the ones who's ahead. Odds are, I'm going to be one of the students who needs to catch up in some classes...

She considered removing the extra book, but it was too late. It was already in the backpack.

Elise looked around her room as she did one last check.

I'm good to go. They're not serving breakfast in the cafeteria until 7... I could loiter around here and read, but on the same hand... maybe they'll serve food early? Maybe I can get there and be first in line and get all the muffins?

Elise shrugged, grabbed her backpack, and left for the cafeteria.

    John Dove & Elaine Winters

    "Watch your right!"

As Elaine and John settled into a more comfortable pace for jogging and talking (though still keeping it brisk) something zoomed past them leaving behind an after image of bright green and vibrant cyan. Their noses got a good whiff of sweat, adrenaline and what must've been boundless energy as whoever had shouted practically rocketed past them, sprinting so fast that it was hard to get a good look at the person.

Whoever it had been, they must've been going at some 30 feet per second, as when they tried to slow down and turn back to talk to the duo, there was a screeching sound coming from their sneakers and a smelt of burn rubber accompanied the earlier cavalcade.

    "Whoop!"

Letting out an odd sound, the person stumbled forward launched themselves into a jump and caught the track with their hands, propelling into a somersault that caught some magnificent air. That person then stuck the landing in perfect T-pose, bouncing on the soles of their feet to adjust to that sudden stop they had come to.

It was a ridiculous show to be honest - coming from just about anyone else, it would have been a disgusting moment of showing off.

... But when this heaving mass of sweat and excitement turned to look at Elaine and John, her eyes showing nothing but sincere cheerfulness and happiness at spotting another pair on the track, glad that there suddenly not one but two running partners for this morning showcase of athleticism.

"Hiyas, Johnnie! Hiyas, Yankee!" the girl that was currently so thoroughly soaked that her clothes were practically see through. "How'zit hanging?"

    Ubon Sĕeklęun, who else?

A girl who was practically vibrating out of her skin thanks to her runner's high, looking like an over-excited dog that didn't know what it should do due to pure joy of being, well, a dog.

    Only Ubon wasn't a dog.

She was just too caught up in the joy of being Ubon Sĕeklęun.
