I also wondered if any of you would be remotely interested in some kind of ongoing challenge to get you motivated to write. I hate that fanfic is so slow and that we don't engage each other well anymore. Bring back Old Internet etiquette. That part anyway.

Probably. While I'm not quite as active in fics as I was before, there are still a bunch more fics I'd want to recommend but didn't really bother because the other thread died.

I'm not a super active random reader, either, but I like it when there is actually some kind of community around it. That was why I suggested a sort of Challenge thing, too.

I'm not good at finding new fics, but if someone else recommended it, I'd probably throw in my two cents on it. Right now all end up doing is looking down TvTropes Fanfic Recs list every few months to find new things.

Anyone have thoughts on actually producing fic per the Challenge idea floated? But I'm gathering that people maaay be interested in the fic rec thing so keep voting as you like.

Well it could be a number of things, but the point is trying to create some communal incentive / promoting fic production that doesn't have to be of intensely high inspiration.

I guess I've decided to work on making a new Fanfic Rec thread. Is there anything about the old one that you definitely want to keep or that could have worked better? Since, if I am successful, it'll be my baby I kind of have to go with what will work for me, but I would like to know what you guys want / would use.

I definitely would like to encourage more active use of this fanfic forum, and I am thinking of a challenge thing but ironing out the details in my mind. However, I would also like to make sure that the fic rec thread is open to both off-site and on-site fic. I think it already pretty much is, but I'm reiterating that in case there's something that would make that work better for you.

Perhaps you could preserve the old recs on Kyte's first posts in that thread? I don't think they're up-to-date, though.

It would probably be easier for you to just use all the fics on the old list , since they'd just get re-rec'd anyways. Or at least that's what I thought until I actually took a look back there and saw all the one person recommendations on years dead stories. The Porn section and Short fics at least tend to be pretty well regarded. The most consensus seems to be from the Anti-rec section, which isn't really surprising, but I don't know if you'd want a place for people to rage against trash on your version.

If you have the time I'd also say to keep the links to the positive reviews, to showcase why the fic is there. The negatives too, for the dissenting opinions. Or at least those that arn't just one line of "good story, good action".

I think Hill of Swords might've had some good review in the beginning.

IIRC some of the ones on the Negative List (Specifically In Flight and FFD) started off with a bunch of Positive reviews that got either retracted or inverted into disrecs as the stories progressed, yes.

+1s without proper reviews or articulated reasons, however short, for the recommendations should be done away with, if only to encourage that minimum of input on a work that one has enjoyed.

I guess "initial review may not be negative" is a good rule of thumb. If something ends up in the negative after a while that's probably fine, but I don't want to make a thing where dog-piling is really easy?

I agree that there should be some kind of bare minimum writing thing other than a +1 because one of the things that, I think, inhibits positive fandom participation these days is people's lack of communication about things they actually like.

This makes sense. Asking a reviewer to accompany their +1 with a few sentences isn't an onerous requirement.

One other change I'd like to see is increased visibility for contest-winning and runner-up stories. Top entries don't get their own threads in the fanfic forum unless the author makes one, so it's already easy for new users/lurkers to miss these excellent fics.
Perhaps the 3 stories with the most votes in each contest could be included in the rec list with an excerpt from the judging thread serving as a review. This could be done retroactively.
