For me it was Bulbasaur, Totodile, Treecko, Turtwig, Snivy, dont remember cuz I boxed starter in gen 6, Rowlet, and now probably monkey trouble unless he gets ugly.
i’m not sure what to think of the super linear looking region though. They better gve us Fly fast lol, backtracking is gonna be a bitch. Also hoping we get a big batch of pokemon this time, last two gens have felt pretty scarce.
Alola gave more Pokemon than Unova, if I remember correctly, or the same amount.

I'm always tempted to go with the Grass starter because Bulbasaur was my very first Pokemon, but my starters actually went like this:
Bulbasaur > Cyndaquil > Mudkip > Turtwig > Tepig
Didn't play X/Y or Sun/Moon, though I've considered circling back around to S/M some day. I would probably pick the Grass starter for Alola because I think Incenroar and Primarina look terrible. I'm also on Team Grookey right now, but that could change depending on how they all evolve.

Actually unlike other gens, I find gen 3 and 4 had all good starter choices. I can hardly blame anyone for picking one or the other in those two games.

Gen 4 had rad designs, Gen 3 remains my fave designs for starters.
Gen 3 is my fav overall in term of Pokemon and character design.
Though I'm probably biased because that's the generation I started with.

gen7 i guess does have 18 Kanto reskins and 11 ultra beasts to beef up the number a bit, but I don’t care about Ultra beasts at all and I’d much rather have new pokemon than a slightly tweaked kanto mon.
I like the region. The scenery looks good.

I joined two years too late...
Ultra Beasts were pretty good, and the Alolan Regional Forms deserve consideration as separate Pokemon, considering how differently they play from their Kanto counterparts. They are not just RESKINS, just as the remakes aren't just remakes.
An electric geodude does not interest me the same way a brand new pokemon I know nothing about does. When I delve into a new gen, what I look for in the game is to find and get to know brand new pokemon first and foremost, not get my genwun ass pandered to.
in FGO terms: new heroes debuting as Servants > more Artorias with new gimmicks
True, I just don't consider the Regional Variants to be mere reskins, and frankly, it finally developed a concept alluded to in previous Pokedex entries of regional differences between members of the same species, and it incorporated a real evolutionary phenomenon on island biomes.
I don't play the games to build an "optimal" team, and I went into Gen IV totally blind. I rolled with Turtwig because it reminded me of Bulbasaur a little bit.

Considering these games are named Sword and Shield, I hope the mascot legendaries have knightly elements to them, or the plot has some medieval type angle, maybe with legends of some guardian knight or other?
I'd count the Ultra Beasts as new mons to add to the dex count. Not Alolan forms though, they're just forms.
Regarding previous gen, I really loved all about Alola I can say. I liked the 3 starters and I found the most of the regional Pokemon good in some form that was hard to decide in a team, something rare really in my case. This only happens in Sinnoh and Kanto as I'm of the people of only use Pokemon of the actual gen as a personal rule. Is more difficult to think of a shit Pokemon of Alola that a good one, only Pukkyumukkyu cames to mind.
Now the 2nd gen games where fabulous in everything aside the Pokedex, because holy fuck I really think more of the half was shit, or maybe is because was more defense oriented. So in my starter choice is something like this and shows my preferences.
1st gen: whatever of the 3.
2nd gen: Typhosion (and it was nothing special).
3th gen: Sceptile
4th gen: Whatever of the 3 with favoritism with Infernape.
5th gen: Samurott.
6th gen: Greninja (because holy fuck the other two)
7th gen: whatever of the 3.
