That was a weird dream.

Like a really weird dream.

My dreams are never that vivid. No one talks in my dreams, so having that V guy monologue about destiny and journeys was freaky. It’s like a video game leaked into my head. I’ll have to tell Elle about this. She loves talking about dreams and crap like-

This isn’t my bed. This isn’t my room. This wasn’t even the hotel room I was supposed to be sleeping in.

First, the hotel bed certainly wasn’t one of those massive king-size beds with a canopy and flowy white drapes, and a dozen useless pillows stuffed around my head. It looked like the kind you’d see a princess or debutant sleeping on in a romance movie. The comforter on me felt like it was made from sheep made of clouds.

Secondly, the hotel room had been this big. It hadn’t been small, Elle always splashed out for ‘sister trips’ but this was ridiculous. It was 250 square feet, at the least, and filled with a bunch of fancy looking furniture. Armoires and wardrobes and mirrors big enough to reflect the whole opposite side of the room. The door leading out of the room was massive and had big golden handles. The walls were a boring reddish-brown color. Candles were up around the room inside mounted lanterns, giving it a creepy kind of mood lighting with an old eastern vibe. There was a window, but all the shutters had been closed, so it was pitch black otherwise. Creepy.

Thirdly, I don’t remember ordering an elderly man kneeling at the foot of my bed, clutching beads and praying as a wake up call. So why the hell was there an eldelry man in robes kneeling at the foot of the bed, clutching beads and praying?

What the hell is going on?

I started sitting up in the bed, which was hard with how damn comfortable it was, and the old man snaps his eyes open with horror movie-esque speed. He looks surprised, which feels a bit unfair since he isn’t the one who woke up in a strange room with a strange man, but whatever. He stared at me through the curtains, mumbling to himself, his whole body shaking. I stared back at him, confused and more than a little freaked out.

Our little contest felt like it went on for a solid two minutes before he started talking, in perfect, unaccented English too. That was also weird on top of the rest since he looked like the textbook definition of ‘elderly Japanese man,’ right down to the style of ragged brown robes he was wearing. Guess he moved here. Everything out of his mouth was even weirder.

“Hero of the Beyond, you have finally awoken!” I do not like the way he’s smiling at me. I can see all his missing teeth. There’s so much gum.

“This is glorious news! Glorious! The final savior has awakened! Salvation! Salvation! Yes! I must inform the elders immediately! Glorious! Glorious! Ahahahahaaaa!”

And this old man laughed his crazy ass all the way out of the room.

So it looks like I was kidnapped, probably by some whacked out cult members stealing foreign girls for virginal sacrifice or whatever, probably thinking they can use me to meet their god. Or demon. Ugh. I told Elle I didn’t want to go on this dumb trip and look what happened. She better find me before they start chanting or I’m going be pissed.

Fuck, when did they even take me? What was I doing before? I don’t even remember making it back to the hotel.

I remember leaving. I was going down to the convenience store at the corner. I always heard about how cool Japanese convenience stores were, so I wanted to see if they had what I wanted. I went down there to pick up some….

1. Cigarettes. It’d been a while since I’d had a good smoke and I could feel a headache coming on. I hoped they had my brand.
2. Snacks. Sure, I’d had dinner an hour ago, but it’s not like I’m getting any bigger...

I bought my stuff and left. Then it started raining. That was annoying. The forecast hadn’t said a damn thing about rain but I shouldn’t have been surprised. Just my luck.

Although, that old guy did lend me his umbrella, so that was pretty nice, but he might’ve also thought I was a middle schooler, so yeah. Stupid uniform. Still, beats getting wet.

Then I went to cross the street and a truck came blazing out of nowhere. The light had been red and everything, so no one should’ve been driving, especially not that fast. I could hear people yelling as it barreled down the road, honking like a mad goose. All I saw were the lights heading my way.

Damn good thing I dodged it. Fell flat on my ass, but better than getting pancaked. That crazy ass driver kept going too, careening past me and the old guy and slammed into the front of the convenience store, smashing straight through the doors and windows. Glass was everywhere. The lights in the store flickered. I think I heard somebody screaming. That’s when I…

Didn’t matter though. The truck started revving up again and came reversing out the same speed it went in. And then-

Wait. What?

And then ...it hit me. Slammed right into me with the back of the door. I even remember the sign on it. White Snake Delivery. I went down and the truck went over me. The tires...rolled right over my chest. That hurt a lot. I couldn’t breath. Then it got to my head and then...I woke up here.

Okay. Okay. Now, I’m weirded out.

If that happened, then I should be-

“Hero!” Damn it! I’m trying to figure this shit out right now! Now, I’ve lost my train of thought!

The door to ‘my’ room swung open and a whole procession of people came marching in, all dressed in robes like that weird old guy; drab, ragged, and distinctly Eastern. Most of them were pretty old too with grey hair and wrinkles, but there were some younger people around my age. Men and women both and about twenty people in total. And not all of them were Asian. An inclusive cult, I guess.

The one who had shouted, a man dressed in black robes, stood at the front of the group. He was the biggest, prettiest, whitest bald man I had ever seen in my life. He towered over the rest with his head gleamed in the candlelight. I could barely see his eyes when he looked down at me.

He was definitely the cult leader with the vibe he was giving off. Very authoritative but alluring at the same time with how strange he looked. Which explains why the look he’s giving me makes my skin crawl. Apparently, no one ever taught this guy that staring was rude. All his lackies were doing the same thing, giving me that weird wide eyed look like they were seeing some freakish thing. A few of them even gasped. I didn’t think I was that ugly.

Things took a turn from kind of culty to very culty when they all bowed in perfect unison. As if they had been practicing this, and it wasn’t even normal at-the-waist bowing, it was outright prostration. Heads and hands on the floor, god-fearing prostration. So yeah, these people are definitely going to kill me to summon a demon or something. Wonderful.

“Hero of the Beyond.” The leader was talking again as loudly as he had been when he was standing up. “We, the elders of Wa, humble ourselves before your magnificent presence. We have given all our energies into summoning you to this world. We now ask you personally, bowed at your feet: will you save us, Oh, Great Hero? Will you face the Trial of the Gods and bring salvation to our people?”

Oh. Okay.
