[x] Make Houses exclusive communities with a strictly regulated number of members, based on the number of "points" that House has earned. Enforce the rules on assigning the points on a standard qualifying system with a rigid number each teacher/Prefect can add/remove in any timeframe. All changes in points are not only shown publicly, but have a (brief) description of reasons posted alongside it where every student can learn of it. Winners at House competition receive special treatment in a manner that doesn't infringe on the learning process (some superficial stuff like their colors prevailing in decoration of Castle, or the food choice of a day decided by the House voting, etc.). Entering a House is a special, but not necessary public ceremony which can be allowed to any student of Hogwarts from the 3rd Year and onwards. Each House may have their own criteria for membership. All members of any House have mandatory standards of acceptable grades and behavior. On a special occasion a member of Faculty or a majority vote of the House may exile a member who breached the conduct/school rules in a severe manner. The slot of the exiled member cannot be filled until the end of the Year to underline the importance of such decision. The Headmaster has a right of absolute authority in these matters, in exchange for the expected unbiased judgment. Any matters of conflict, like bias among teachers, the lack of commitment of school resourses towards the House privileges, unfair exiles initiated by Faculty, etc. - can be addressed to the Council of Directors by the student body. There may or may not be Student self - organization structure, i.e. Prefects (starting from Year 3), but it all depends on the number of students attending.

Um. Well, I just like the idea of Houses? I admit that I skimmed the organization of Durmstrang, so I remember almost nothing of it; not sure how much of it is similar.

    [X] Grooming the Dodo

Learning to groom our beloved dodo is a must. She shall not look like some farmgirl..ah farmdodo. And it is time to explore.

I will have to do this assignment and think about later. I am just not up for it today.

As it turns out, the first step to getting his dodo groomed is to go to the Hogwarts library, where the boy was able to find a copy of You and Your Owl (sadly, there were no books on caring for Diricrawl, or at least, none that anyone had bothered to stock). Said tome contained valuable information on things like what birds did to take care of themselves (preening), as well as what he needed to do to take care of a bird - namely, trim the wings to keep them even, as well as bathing them.

'Though it seems like birds can just bathe themselves if you give them a bowl of water...I didn't know they had to be air-dried though, without magic.'

Granted, this covered owl care, and not diricrawl care, but he imagined the principles had to be similar.

    Though...

What do I call the dodo?

    [ ] Owl
    [ ] Bird
    [ ] Kweh
    [ ] (Write-in a name)

Ronald Weasley seems interested in tagging along - apparently, his niffler needs the exercise. Will you let him come along?

    [ ] Yes
    [ ] No

Keep working on the Hogwarts House stuff.

    [x] Lupin (the Fourth)

A fitting name an elegant noble thief. Our girl fits the bill. Has benefit of staying true to our character Japanese roots, while being recognizable to some of his peers thanks to the original source material.

    [x] No

No normies during our time with Dodo. The Red Menace will surely distract us from Lupin's magnificence, and that's just unacceptable.

    [x] Yes.

If it was just Ron, I would tell him to fuck off but the niffler can become useful for us. Have it bond with the Dodo so our bird can sometimes snatch (and bring to us) a couple of baubles from stuff it has hoarded around the school. Yes, it's totally manipulative, selfish and greedy but we have debts to pay. We shall have the funds for it, one way or another.

nvm, discord finally allows me to join.

With regards to the History assignment, let me try to make things a little easier...let's ask some questions.

Do you believe the status quo works?

    [ ] Yes
    [ ] No

If not, what do you see the houses becoming?

[ ] Reducing them to glorified dorms
[ ] Places for the elites of Hogwarts

How much power should these dorms retain?

[ ] They should be the center of Hogwarts student life - each should have their own clubs, activities, and sponsored Quidditch team
[ ] They should be a convenient grouping to enforce discipline on the student body (the House point system should remain)
[ ] They should have a different identity, with each having a different menu, different additional teaching they offer access to, and such
[ ] None - they should be places to sleep, nothing more

When should one be sorted into a House?

[ ] When one first comes to Hogwarts - it makes sense from an organizational standpoint
[ ] At the end of the first year - when one has gotten to know Hogwarts a bit
[ ] After OWLs, leaving Houses as upper year dorms for NEWT students, with younger students being Houseless
[ ] Whenever a student wants, though it should not be required

How should the sorting be done?

[ ] Use the Hat - that's what it is there for
[ ] Completing a trial set by members of the Houses
[ ] Let the student choose

Should students be able to change Houses?

    [ ] Yes - whenever they wish
    [ ] Yes - once a year
[ ] Yes - but only once, and they'd better have a good reason
[ ] No - because choices should have consequences

Make them flavorful to appeal to a variety of people. Some may join because they like the house theme, another group may want to join because the options the house offer fit into their career choice, etc...

One year to make up your mind sounds fair, and give the idea that everyone comes from the same pool of unaligned students.

Freedom of choice follows up on being the master of your own fate thing.

Once a year seems a bit much but that's the closest to the Durmstrang model that I wanted to go for. The alternative is only once in seven years, which is not enough for the purpose of having students trying out how other houses operate.

They stay special but only to the older students this way. Think of it as declaring your major after some years of general study. Different tracks for people based on what they want to be. Hence why I wait late for them to chose. And because its late, once picked it is mostly locked in but like college you can change you major but you are going to have a bad time trying to met the standards.
