If it helps, I play Azur Lane and still have no idea what it's about. The "story mode" is the most bare bones thing around, it makes even FGO's Septum look like a masterpiece. Half the reason I'm gonna watch the anime is to find out what the story actually is.

Guilty Crown wasn't him. Or it was him as much as Uro was behind Gargantia, Gunslinger Stratos and Aldnoah Zero. His name is on it, but his role was minor. The ones to blame for GC would be Ichiro Okouchi, Hiroyuki Yoshino and Tetsuro Araki

In GC he wrote for someone elses story just like hes doing on Azur lane. Its not an original haganeya work, it is an azur lane anime written by haganeya. Its audience is azur lane fans. He doesnt have unlimited creative freedom like when writing his own eroge.
In GC, he wasn't credited as main writer. And sure he might not have 100% creative control, but he has more freedom than if he was adapting a VN, manga or other medium or mobage precisely because AL doesn't have much in terms of story that can work in anime form. Mobage adaptations are weird due to the "excuse plot" nature of many mobage (with the exceptions like FGO being limited in number) and lots of them end up going the Last Period way of only using characters and setting, but doing their own thing over strictly sticking to the game's plot.
Being logical, I know it's likely AL won't be that great. Because of the preexisting material not being the greatest thing ever and because writing for anime =/= writing for VNs (a good example being Last Encore, which ended up suffering from Nasu just not being an anime writer and stuff that may have worked as a videogame or VN just not working as an anime script). I still want to have hope, but the more time passes, the more I realize I'm likely to end up dissapointed if I don't limit my hype.
